I think he does really love her but is limited in his understanding of love. His family doesn't seem that loving. He looked around for other models. He is not really behaving that differently than the male role models around him, Sterling and Don etc. He just lacks their self assured confidence. (He was right to yell at Don. That dude should not be on his high horse.)
Pete doesn't know what he really wants. So he has no limit on how over reaching he will be to get what he thinks he wants and when he touches it it leaves him unsatisfied.
He reminds me of McNulty, from the Wire. Always trying to prove something but not knowing what it is or why.
