    Re: Mad Men

What struck me in this episode was most of the staff's inability to recognize a Beatles facsimile coupled with the ending of the Cool Whip scene ("You can't smoke in here"). Has anyone disallowed smoking on the show yet? We're approaching a sea change--the late 60's--and we've known that for a while now, but I think the fact that Don's (and SDPC's) only tether to the Beatles/contemporary culture is Megan signifies that she'll be the key to keeping Mad Men (and the Mad Men) topical.

I'm not good at symbolism, though. Tomorrow never knows? So next is Sgt. Pepper? Someone already did LSD. Or the baked beans ad will end up using baby doll parts and then scrapped altogether.

It was a test kitchen, so I don't think smoking was ever allowed. And yeah, Don was looking for I Wanna Hold Your Hand, not Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. (yeah I know) Ginzo's response was funny though.

that's true. i just thought it contrasted with the blatant smoking in a hospital, which i think they showed before.

Reading about the historical context of this concert when that episode aired, it seems as if Don would not have actually been able to hear the Beatles over the shrieking of thousands of teenage girls and crappy sound equipment. IIRC, the Beatles couldn't hear themselves play and had to cut the concert short after something like 30-40 minutes.

In "The Trip" Don whistles the entire melody to "I wanna hold your hand" and Megan says " I thought you hated that song." So he knew what they sounded like.

So what DOES Don listen to? He seems like an old fart.

I really liked Peggy telling Don to shut up. Then the following shot of everyone reacting to the "you can't smoke in here" thing was the perfect balance to it.

I think the only cool thing I've seen him do was when he was reading the Frank O Hara poems.

I *really* wanted to see Pete struggle with the ski equipment on the train. I also think that Pete is only messing around with other ladies because he thinks he's supposed to. And he's really bad at it.

    Re: Mad Men

nuh uh. when don cared about work, he'd sneak out at lunch to the art house films to watch them. and midge exposed him to a bunch of cool counter culture stuff in the early 1960s. he's cooler and less square than we give him credit for. he also seems to actually spend time with megan's friends (there have been several references to them spending time together).

the beatles put out a ton of music in a very short period of time and really transformed their sound rapidly. unless you were really paying attention, i imagine it would be really easy not to know what the beatles sounded like anymore after a couple albums.

also, thumbs up to megan for starting him on a deep cut.

I yelled "YEAH!" at the beginning of Tomorrow Never Knows, got uncomfortable with the song being played over Pete (who, yes, is just perpetually disgusting) and the heart, and then they cut back to Don and it was perfect from there.

So in the Chevalier Blanc pitch, Ginsberg created the AXE Body Spray ad campaign?

I think the Test Kitchen Guy reprimanding Peggy for picking up the cups (why?) threw her off her game straight away and ruined the "scene". Also, she sucked at that.
