So long, Black Moses
Some people might only know him from South Park or Shaft but Hayes's work at Stax evolved Soul music from singles into sprawling album tracks. Listen to "By the Time I Get Phoenix."

His version of Bacharach's "Walk On By" still makes me shiver:
And who can forget...
Too many great people going down in one week.

"Do Your Thing" is a great song and doubles as a great personal philosophy and way of life.
Very, very sad. No more deaths of people I admire this weekend please.

What a lousy week.
If you haven't heard them, you seriously owe it to yourself to seek out his first five LP's. I'm sure they're all over the blogs right now. They're some of the best soul records of all time. Strong grooves and beautiful, even psychedelic arrangements, not to mention his iconic voice.
Along with being a great track in its own right, his intense version of "Walk on By" is the sample for my very favorite Wu-Tang song. Isaac also guests with a smooth talk-down in it

I might have to watch Truck Turner this week.
