Thread: Google Chrome

  1. #1

    Google Chrome

First of all, you can download it here.

So far, I do not like like:

    -The super creepy EULA.
-You can't press the scroll button and have anything happen.
-Where the fuck are my bookmarks hiding? Rhetorical, people. But still.
-Spellcheck tells you when you're wrong, but won't let you right click to correct. Funny how this issue carried over from Google Docs. I guess it's a Microsoft OS feud thing?
-No Mac version? Perhaps it's for the best.
-Supposedly it's faster, but at least at my office it's very slow. Most sites treat me to "Resolving Proxy" in the bottom left corner for 30-90 seconds before I can load them.

    What I like:

    -Simpler is in fact prettier.
-It seems less crashy than Firefox.

    Anyone else?

Mac version is "on the way."

Do we need another browser? Most people like Firefox, and I'm content with Safari, while the world at large accepts IE and can't (or won't bother to) switch.

    Re: Google Chrome

After a full day of use I decided I am content with Firefox until the bugs are worked out.

Yea, Macs don't really need it, I was just annoyed I couldn't try it at home.

    I like it.

But it needs add-ons like immediately. I can't live without Adblock.

    Re: Google Chrome

    Google owns us.

Take a look at the terms of service for Chrome:

    From Chrome's Terms of Service:

'By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.

You agree that this license includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.'

That's weird, because I'm pretty sure I own everything you all write on AST.

I'm not a good socializer but I'm good at drawing. I did this thing about google chrome, not for any website though. Just for fun. I think it expresses my opinion on things.

I'm just a dude with a lot on my mind and loves to draw.

I don't have a website, but check out this great one: http://www.aspecialthing.com

the EULA has changed and it's not so "own-ey."

    Re: Google Chrome

I've been using it for a few days and I really like it. My only complaint is every time I open the browser I have to reset the text size to make it larger. It doesn't remember the setting the way IE does.

    Re: Google Chrome

I tried it at work and it is noticeably faster.

Firefox still wins though because of the vast library of add-ons. I don't see how Chrome can ever overtake that.

It's weird that Google is rolling out worthless stuff like this (see: Okrut, Knol). It's like they are planting the seed for the day when they buy the internet and outlaw Wikipedia & Facebook to replace them with their shitty versions.

Shitty versions? Everthing up until Chrome has been better than the non-Google alternatives. And once Chrome gets a decent library of add-ons, I think it will overtake Firefox.

    Knol...Okrut? Seriously?

Don't get me wrong, they usually hit a home run- I love Docs, Cal, Gchat, etc., but it's kind of annoying how they are trying to corner every single market.

Competition is always good, but a part of me just wants Firefox, Facebook and Wikipedia to grow; some of the weaker Google projects that I mentioned are just going to fracture everything.

The only positive I see to Chrome at this point is that it is faster. You can do the same things in Firefox as you can in Chrome with add-ons but now web developers have to worry about making sure their code is complaint with yet another browser. Boo.

Oh, that's what that "sasquatch owns your ass" line was all about in the disclaimer.

    Re: Google Chrome

Well, I'm sure (although I haven't checked) that Chrome is standards compliant and if that's the case then developers don't have to worry about making their stuff work in any browser, oh, except the most popular browser there is, IE (although, isn't IE8 supposed to have fixed this as well?).

I know this is a really old thread but I did not want to high jack some other thread. If you are using Chrome check out the update with "Extensions". They are like apps for your browser.

For example I have the Google Translator extension. So if I am on a website with some other language I can just translate it in one click. It is great for when I am looking at stuff on Fuzzy Squid.
