Thread: Getting Mugged

    Getting Mugged

It happened to me last night for the first time ever. 3 guys followed me into my building knocked me down grabbed my wallet, phone and Ipod and hit me (not hard) in the back of the head a few times.

I called the police and they caught 2 of the guys 20 minutes later with my phone, and Ipod (I convinced the muggers to leave my wallet after they took the cash).

So I'm going to get most of my stuff back and I didn't get hurt. It could have been a lot worse.

Does anyone else have any stories like this?

    That's insane. I'm glad you're okay.

The closest that's ever happened to me was when a man snatched a woman's purse in front of me. I froze at that brutality, so I can't imagine what you had to deal with.

I have been Jumped by forty members of a gang in middle school called The South West Stunners, tried to steal some cash. I am a pretty big guy, so people tend to leave me alone nowadays.

I'm lucky to have not been mugged. I'm really sorry you had to go through this, though I am glad it wasn't worse.

I was very confused at first by your post, as I thought they had "Ipod hit" you, which sounds like a pretty ineffectual mugging tactic.

40 guys? That seems a bit much for a mugging. Were they paraplegics?

How can you be jumped by 40 people? Did they form a line to take turns punching you, or did they circle you like The Foot Clan and come in one at a time?

    Re: Getting Mugged

It's not really a mugging but on sunday night this guy came up to my roommate in the starbucks (thats what I get, right?) and started asking us really stupid and fishy questions. Like where is the C train, I was down there but its not on the sign, etc... Then I noticed that under his carefully placed newspaper my purse was shaking. So I snatched it from him and he freaked out and started yelling about how he wasn't trying to steal anything so I was embarrassed and angry and told him to leave us alone. It was only after he left that I looked into my purse to notice my touch screen fancy pants phone my mom got me was gone. And so was the guy.....

And the cops never found anything but the starbucks people told me he is in there every night causing trouble and stealing things!!

So if you ever think someone is stealing from you and they try to make a scene to embarrass you for thinking that CHECK YOUR SHIT BEFORE THEY LEAVE!

When asked why Starbucks lets him keep coming back, the espresso machine answered "This is America."

    Re: Getting Mugged

Sorry to hear you were mugged. Getting jumped is terrifying. I was pseudo-mugged once. Walking down the street after a party and a guy approached me and said "I need you to give me your money." I assumed he just sucked at panhandling and ignored him but he continued to walk beside me asking me for money again. Finally he got frustrated and said "Man, I'm ROBBING you!" He didn't have a weapon and he didn't look like a tough guy so I told him to fuck off. By this time I was close to a busy street, so I crossed and kept walking.

A also made a citizen's arrest once and held a guy until police came, but no one ever believes me when I tell them the details.

    If you insist...

A friend and I were walking home after the bar about 3 a.m so the streets were pretty empty. Suddenly we hear tires squealing and a lot of noise. We turned around and saw a van with a hot dog cart being towed behind it come screaming around the corner being chased by a car. The momentum of the turn caused the hot dog cart to flip over so it was being dragged, so sparks are shooting off in all directions. The weight of the cart caused the van to swerve head-on into a lighting pole. The guy in the other car had stopped and was out his window screaming "He stole my hot dog cart!" The guy in the van had got out and was starting to run when I had a split second thought that I should chase the guy. I hand my Whopper Jr to my friend (we had been drinking so Burger King seemed like a good idea) and take off after him. I catch up to him and push him from behind and he goes flying into one of the columns outside a bank which stunned him pretty good. I can hear sirens by now, so I grab him and put him in a full-nelson until some cops come running over. Then I handed him over to the cops who said "Thanks, but that was pretty dumb." I gave them a statement and ate my Whopper jr.

I left out the detail that the arresting officer was Robocop.

Of course it's true. It's Canada. Here in the good old USA, you'd have to worry that the guy's got a gun on him.

What was your biggest concern as you were tackling him to the ground, that he'd hit you in the head with a big hunk of Moose Jerky?

(P.S. Since there was an overturned hotdog cart nearby, I'd have grabbed a few and 'sausage slapped' the guy...)

    Re: Getting Mugged

I've been threatened with mugging twice, and both times managed to talk my way out. All with a combination of playing dumb, and being friendly and sympathetic. After them telling me the story of their life and becoming quasi-pals they seemed to lose the the motivation.

Once was in Lyon, France walking through the city at 3 am and being swarmed by three Algerian guys demanding I hand over my stuff. I stalled and we talked for a while, eventually ending up having them buy me a beer. That is until the police picked them up for a prior offense. The other time was in Baltimore with a crackhead sitting next to me and brandishing a knife. I paid no mind to his rather noncommital threats and kept chatting him up until my bus came. I said goodbye and he made no move to stop me.

It's not as if I was pulling one over on them. It's just the way I disconnect from reality in bewildering situations.

Admittedly it's given me false confidence about taking the pacifist approach. But they've been rather passive-aggressive muggers. I suspect I'm fucked if I'm ever faced with a motivated assailant. I'll believe I can reason with the guy and get shot.
