I read this script and liked it, but damn, Clint is getting pretty hammy with his tough guy schtick. Maybe in context it's better, but there are a few Leslie Nielsen-esque self-parody moments in that trailer.

Yeah, it looks really awful. The finger gun, the "get off my lawn!", blech blech blech.

Agreed although the "get off my lawn" actually made me a bit scared. It's badass crazy old Clint Eastwood. There's juuuuust a second of it but it's all in the eyes. 60 years of badassery.

Yeah!!! Crazy angry Clint is back!

I love Clint Eastwood. And not just because he's a Republican vegan (which fascinates me to no end).

I'll be seeing this because I like old men who kick ass, no matter how corny the plot may be.

    This trailer has tone issues.

Clint Eastwood as The Old Man Who Will Fuck Your Shit Up.

I'm in! If only because I learned to drive in my dad's Gran Torino on the streets of Detroit.

I love Clint Eastwood. I also hate Clint Eastwood.

The trailer makes so much more out of the external conflict (old man vs. street gang) than the script did -- that's not really what it's "about." I'm hoping the movie didn't make the same mistake, because the script was primarily about a racist old war vet who hates himself and is punishing himself for past sins, and how he's reluctantly drawn out of his shell by his teenage neighbor. It was pretty on the nose at times, but overall a solid and satisfying character study. I thought it would've been great with Nicholson in the lead... I don't know that Clint is all that great an actor at the end of the day (thought he is a skilled filmmaker).

He excels in a narrow spectrum of "Clint Eastwood" roles. He plays guys that are stiff and reserved. "A man's got to know his limitations". Unforgiven is just about the best movie ever because of it.

Nicholson would be interesting. Since it's getting close to Halloween I'd love to bring Steve McQueen back from the dead for this one.

Clint was on Fresh Air recently, and that's how he framed it; an old guy dealing with his own past and racism as the world changes around him. I'm looking forward to it.

Also, Matt: it must be a bummer to have so many movies spoiled by your job. Does the fun of being able to read them ahead, and being able to compare to the film, make up for it?

Just tell the studio "OK, I'll read it but NO SPOILERS!!!!!"

There's not much "fun" in it. It can be interesting, but yeah, mostly it just ruins the movie-going experience. Luckily I don't read every movie that gets made, and often the stuff I've read that makes it to screen is bad anyway, so it's no great loss.
