Thread: Friday Night Lights

    Friday Night Lights

I re-watched the first and second seasons this past week (Why? Because I can't get enough of Landry/Lance talking about Crucifictorious) and I saw commercials for the third season on TV recently and I'm so happy it's coming back. Regardless if it was snubbed by the Emmy's, this (along with Mad Men) is the best drama on television bar none. I haven't seen a high school show this good since Freaks and Geeks.

What I've read is that the show is going to be playing on Direct TV this fall and then later re-airing the third season in the winter time on NBC. I hate to say it, but this feels like the last season. They only ordered 13 episodes and NBC isn't putting much behind the show.

Oh yeah and tell your mother I said hello.

I've got the first season on DVD if anyone wants to trade/buy.

    It's no Freaks and Geeks.

New season preimere was recently on I guess. Anyone see it?
I haven't yet, but since no one knows what the deal with this show is, whether its on or not, I thought I'd revive this thread for promotion.

Wait, what? I'd better check my DVR.

Well I decided to google it rather than make Jouster come and tell us about it. I guess its on DirectTV now and then a few months later it'll be on NBC.

    Re: Friday Night Lights

It's only on DirecTV for now -- they're co-financing it (otherwise NBC would've cancelled it). I'm pretending it's not on and planning to watch when it launches on NBC in January (I made that month up, but I assume that's the plan). I guess the other option is BitTorrent, but honestly after last season I'm not invested enough to make the effort.

    I guess I have a reputation.

The new episode was good. It gave me the feeling that the show is trying to return to season one form.

If you're like me and can't wait or don't have Direct TV, it's out there.

Ditto. No way I could wait any longer and I'm glad I didn't. I think this will be another great season. I'd like to see a little more of QB1, though.

I agree with that. It looks like its going to be a good season. I am glad they are not sweeping the large elements of the show that didn't work under the rug and giving Smash a graceful exit (and maybe Street too), but seem to axing Santiago and the magical nurse and Lyla's perfect Christian radio boyfriend post-haste. At least it seems that way. It was a good one and I now have high hopes for the show.

The interesting thing would be, what if the show became a hit now? They are establishing a policy of not following the characters out of high school, but at this point they've got only one more year of most of the young cast. It would be interesting if the show took off and became a show about the school and the team and the cast was filled with whoever was in high school and on the team that year plus Coach and Tami Taylor.

    Re: Friday Night Lights

Though I've yet to see anything from the new season, I look at the second season, uh... "detours"... in the same way I do the early half of "Arrested Development's" third season. Everyone involved with the show the prior season thought the show was gonna get canned, so they kind of blew out everything they could... and then they found out they were coming back, so now they actually had to deliver.

The second season of "Lights" had so much more melodrama than the first, too. That's what really stuck out with me.

    Re: Friday Night Lights

the press conference in the season premiere was jaw-droppingly bad, like straight-to-dvd movie bad, and i was really worried that about this season, but things picked up and i'm back in.

    Re: Friday Night Lights

Well, halfway in this season, it's pretty similiar to season 2 in that its good in a lot of ways, but ultimately very soap opera-ish. Anyone who was hoping for a return to form can expect to like season 3 only slightly more than season 2.

    Re: Friday Night Lights

Well, its over. It seems very unlikely to return for another season since the Jay Leno idiocy at NBC.
I won't spoil anything. I think all who loved the first season and had mixed feelings about the second will enjoy it. The whole season long I was debating whether to continue since some of the soap opera high drama from s2 still remain. Thankfully they keep it relegated to certain characters and even those ones get respite sometimes.
But between the beautiful way its shot with such a grounding in a particular place and the amazingly well drawn characters (especially Coach and Tami) it is still a completely different show from everything else. And I have to admit that I teared up at few moments.
So I hope that either it gets a season 4 or the actors and writers who worked on it get to have other opportunities to be great elsewhere.

    Friday Night Lights

    [Merged from separate thread. –ILIS]

If there's already a thread for this somewhere, I apologize.

But I just heard it on solid authority that FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is not only getting renewed, it's getting renewed for TWO MORE SEASONS!

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose!

I'm assuming everyone here is watching this terrific show but, if you're not, START.

    Re: Friday Night Lights

Hey, I'm watching the show on NBC as if it didn't already air last fall on DirecTV -- what I'm wondering is, can I safely read this thread, or should I skip it? (Sorry if this has been addressed -- I haven't read this thread bc I didn't want to see any spoilers.)
