Thread: Fall TV Season! Try Not to Watch!

Fall TV Season! Try Not to Watch!

I thought I would start a general thread in case some of these new shows don't deserve a unique thread.

I saw Sons of Anarchy tonight. Pretty grim stuff, but like so many TV dramas it's loaded with good actors from other shows like Deadwood and The Shield. Plus it's got HELLBOY, who got a discrete BJ from Peg Bundy! I'll definitely check it out again next week.

I am looking forward to James Urbaniak starrer SCC: Terminator, and Paul Jay posting every other week that Heroes is "almost totally not that bad."

Lots more nerdfood coming, too. There's Caprica, or Battlestar Galactica: Year One; Dollhouse, Joss Whedon's follow-up to Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog; and Fringe ... I got nothing for this one.

Friday Night Lights season 3 October 1st, for the DirecTV crowd. I've decided I'm excited.

Re: Fall TV Season! Try Not to Watch!

I wasn't sure where else to post this, and it's not really worth creating its own thread for, but Bonnie Hunt has a new syndicated talk show which starts Monday. It's a morning show like "Ellen", so it'll probably be on around 10 or 11 in most markets.

I've always kind of liked Bonnie, so I'll tune in to see what her show is like. I imagine she probably knows a lot of comedy people; the guest on the first episode is Robin Williams. I guess David Duchovny probably won't be making an appearance (Duchovny starred in Bonnie's 2000 movie "Return to Me").

I'm really looking forward to True Blood. The commercials don't look so hot, but I have faith in Alan Ball. I'll probably give it the whole season regardless of how I feel about it at first. I didn't really like SFU at first, but stuck with and it certainly paid off.

Also, not a new show, but I'm looking forward to the return of Dirty Sexy Money. Those few episodes that aired last year were great, and I felt it was just really getting going when the strike hit.

Other than that, I don't know of any new shows that I'm interested in.

Oh man I totally disagree about True Blood besides the adverts bein terrible.

    1) Vampires have been stupid for like 50 years.
    2) Lines like "you look like vampire bait".
MOST IMPROTANTLY 3!) Taking an over-the-top high concept and making it more over-the-top by adding stupid elements like vampire blood being a drug and their apparent attempts to explain fantasy into science. and omg the crappy metaphores that await. I couldn't stop laughing and frownin and eye rollin during the making-of special thing. Which is why I'm totally gonna watch it.

I tried watching the pilot of True Blood, but when the opening credits got to "Based on the novel series 'Southern Vampires,'" I suddenly became embarassed and turned it off. Not sure why.

As far as I know, once Larry decides to do them, shoots them and edits them. I think Garlin said somewhat recently Larry was tied up with that Woody Allen movie and was undecided about another season.

Re: Fall TV Season! Try Not to Watch!

I don't have the balls to start a whole thread on it (I was hoping someone else would), but I already love the new 90210. Actually, I loved the first hour; the second wasn't quite as strong, but I'm still in. The only thing that doesn't work is the returning cast members from the original show (which I also loved as a guilty pleasure) -- they feel out of place in a better written world.

It should be noted that this show is being run by two ex-Freaks and Geeks/Undeclared writers (Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs), and was developed by Rob "Veronica Mars" Thomas (who departed to resurrect his first show "Cupid"). No, it's not as good as either of those shows, but it's still better than it should be for a CW teen soap. Also noteworthy, Jessica Walter essentially reprises her "Arrested Development" role as a rich, boozy and chronically inappropriate grandma, and she's just as fun to watch here.

It's ironic that on her last sitcom she played a morning talk show host and now she is a morning talk show host. WEIRD! She always has the best guest stars on her shows ... Don Lake, Smothers Brothers, Martin Mull ... I am very much looking forward to having her back on TV.

I tuned into 90210 but only because I like that one girl from Degrassi. It couldn't hold my attention and I turned the channel after an hour. Degrassi has ruined all teen dramas for me.

I don't have DirecTV so I'll have to catch these illegally or wait till they air in the winter. So until then "Say hello to your mother for me".

Re: Fall TV Season! Try Not to Watch!

I just watched the Sons of Anarchy pilot and I liked it enough to keep watching the series. In addition to Hellboy and Peg Bundy, it's got Lloyd from Undeclared, Rachel from Mad Men, Skinner from the X-Files, the fat crooked cop from Batman Begins, Adriana from the Sopranos and apparently Charlie Utter from Deadwood will appear in upcoming episodes. Charlie Hunnam's American accent is kind of distracting and he's not the greatest actor in the world, but I think I'll stick with it.

I'LL GET YOU FOR THIS HICKS

I don't think you'll have to worry about my Heroes apologetics this season. I've had plenty of time to stop caring. And to watch Mad Men, and remember what well-written TV looks like. Maybe if Heroes casts Christina Hendricks as a villain who kills men with death rays from her giant boobs, I'll hop back on board.

The best part* about her being on Mad Men is that there are more photos of her online. When she was on Firefly, I think I found 3 photos of her. She had a great recurring con woman character on Firefly, too.

*The best part is her boobs.

Re: Fall TV Season! Try Not to Watch!

Sarah Terminator was all action for about the first 20 minutes; it was pretty hectic for a network show. The scene with Summer River Glau begging for her life was disturbing; it was the high point of the series thus far.

I am recording Fringe while I go to PFT tonight, but I am not that excited about it (Fringe, that is).
