    Do you make music?

I've been making electronic music for some years now, maybe I'll post a track or two later if this thread doesn't instantly die. But I am more interested in hearing some of the music you have written. Are you in a band or do you prefer music creation as more of a personal journey? Post your tracks here and we can all give some creative feedback and help everyone grow musically.

I want to record some stuff, guitar based mainly, but I'm not even sure how to start.

I'm in a band. We're called Ogre Mage. You should check us out if you like fantasy rock.

@ed I have a soundboard and a bunch of mics. I'd love to help you record some stuff.

    Re: Do you make music?

I made a breakbeaty "album" called These Are Your Instructions last year. I'm not massively proud of it, but it has its moments. The point was more to complete something than to aspire to genius, so as not to get blocked and to finally reach an end point. I also set the goal of going from idea (using various instructional sound sources for "vocals") to final product in two weeks, because I'm damned good at procrastinating.

I'd been noodling in Reason (and occasionally in ProTools) for six or seven years with nothing to show for it and it was quite cathartic to force myself to "release" something that I could potentially have spent several more years tweaking. It's lead to quite a flowering of creativity since, I have to say.

I'm also in a prog rock band called Somewhere and we're working on our debut album Magnitizdat, which should be out this spring.

And on the side, I'm fiddling with a solo album quite different from the one linked above. It's also nothing like the band work, but more of an electronic/art rock/post punk hybrid with vocals.

And I did this a few months back (also within a very short timespan): Inspector Spacetime Themes. To be honest, I feel that those could be a LOT better (although the 1984 one almost works). My favorite aspect of the entire thing is the logo and the fake sleeve of the 1976 single.

I really like your 1984 Inspector Spacetime Theme, Teaflax, great work!

I also really like the Ogre Mage lyrics "have you ever noticed he doesn't seem to blink? ... You've fallen in love with an automaton". And the band name suits the music quite well.

America's team - for a super cheap solution you could always get something like this, plug it into your computer's microphone input, and record using a free audio program like Audacity (or a pirated one of your choice...) it's what I used to do in high school. Not great quality and you have to add any effects you want afterward, but if you're looking for a solution to record at home for under $5, it's one way to go. But it also looks like Osquip might be able to help you out.
    ----------------------------------------------------------

So here's a track I've been working on for the past week or so, it's for an ep which I will be releasing for free in a couple weeks. For the past year or so I've been releasing my tracks 7 at a time. Hope you enjoy it

    Re: Do you make music?

I was in a band for ten years and we worked ourselves all the way to nowhere...with a ton of awesome memories in between. Then I did music/comedy stuff for a couple years, and worked myself to nowhere.

Thanks, Recury. I appreciate it. I'll give your tracks a listen when I shouldn't actually be working and can concentrate a bit better. Out of curiosity, what DAW do you use?

    Re: Do you make music?

I did a bunch of songs for this back in 2007:

    http://www.dieyoung.org/songfight/

It was a monthly submission thing, where you had to write a song about whatever the theme was that month. This was curated by AST member, Yumi Tree, so he might have posted about it back then.

Here are a couple of mine from the theme Summer.

Also, I make guitar pedals as a hobby.

I wrote a few (what I called) comedy songs a while back. Most of them are probably boring and repetitive, but maybe I'll post a few when I'm off high school grounds.

    Re: Do you make music?

I have a degree in music composition, and have spent the 10 years post-graduation building a way-too-complicated studio setup, buying way too many mediocre instruments, and writing hundreds of songs that I can't quite finish. Here's a rough demo that demonstrates none of that:

I used part of my vacation yesterday to record a cover of my favorite Christmas song:

    Carol of the Bells

If Ogre Mage was playing in my town I'd totally be in the mosh pit.

I like these, especially the first couple of minutes of Ninja Simone It's Summer Time.

Fun tune Disco. The vibe and melodic ideas remind me of some of the demos my little bro used to make. He didn't record them in a way-too-complicated studio though, he was the exact opposite. He'd drive his car somewhere with a view over the city at night and plug his 4-track into his car's cigarette lighter socket.

I totally relate to the writing hundreds of songs that I never finish though. I have tapes and tapes and cds and cds of incomplete ideas and only about 25 finished songs - a completion rate of sweet f all.

Does anyone ever listen to The Strokes and go "man this seems easy." Except Reptillia, that song is pretty nuts.

    Well, yes.

Then again, I do that with about 99% of all popular bands.
