    Countdown To Chinese Democracy

Well, it's happening: the album everyone thought would never come out is coming out.

November 25th the world will say hello to Chinese Democracy. What are your thoughts?

I hope that despite being 15 years in the making and costing millions of dollars that it still sounds dated.

Buying the Guns N' Roses name was the smartest thing Axl Rose ever did. If this album was being released under the name "Bill Bailey and the Boingers" it would generate about as much interest as a new Slash's Snakepit album. Also - of GNR's three main songwriters - Axl, Slash and Izzy - I enjoyed Axl's songs the least, I was never a fan of lush piano ballads.

So why do I still feel compelled to buy the damn thing?

I've wondered that for about 8 years now. Will the tracks circa 1997 be side by side with tracks from 2007? Or did he scrap all the old stuff as he went along? Oh, Axl, what do you have in store for us?

On November 25th, I'll be 15 dollars poorer, listening to this thing with my free Dr. Pepper, that is for sure.

Here's the tracklisting - most of these titles have been kicking around for years. On the plus side, I just heard about the free Dr. Pepper thing, so I'm definitely in.

    "Chinese Democracy"
    "Scraped"
    "Shackler's Revenge"
    "Street Of Dreams"
    "If The World"
    "Better"
    "This I Love"
    "There Was A Time"
    "Riad N' The Bedovins"
    "Sorry"
    "I.R.S."
    "Catcher"
    "Madagascar"
    "Prostitute"

The song Shackler's Revenge is in Rock Band 2 it's just plain bad.

Those demos that leaked a few months ago were shitty too. I think I remember liking the song There Was a Time at some point, but that's it.

Finally, a new album for 45-year-olds to party to.

(I want to hear it, but only because I'm sure it will reek of late-90's electronica-themed hard rock and ego, and thusly be hilarious)

I just hope Tommy Stinson gets a big fat paycheck, for having to put up with that psycho for so many years.
    My momma had twin babies on one sweet summer day;
She beat one in the head, and I'm the one that got away.

The title track sounds like Alice in Chains if Axl was the oldest frontman in the world. Thanks for waiting a decade Axl!

I'm sorry, I should have elaborated. The only fair way to describe my experience listening to this album is as such:

    1) place pop rocks into ear canals
    2) pour bleach into said canals using a funnel
    3) shake head around a bit
    4) embrace the malaise
    5) repeat steps 1-4 for each track

    Re: Countdown To Chinese Democracy

Writer Chuck Klosterman has been doing bits on the delay of this album for so long, I wondered what he would do if/when it actually came out.

Then he reviewed it for The Onion AV Club:

    http://www.avclub.com/content/featur...terman_reviews

One particularly fun moment from the top: "Reviewing 'Chinese Democracy' is not like reviewing music. It's more like reviewing a unicorn. Should I primarily be blown away that it exists at all? Am I supposed to compare it to conventional horses? To a rhinoceros? Does its pre-existing mythology impact its actual value, or must it be examined inside a cultural vacuum, as if this creature is no more (or less) special than the remainder of the animal kingdom? I've been thinking about this record for 15 years; during that span, I've thought about this record more than I've thought about China, and maybe as much as I've thought about the principles of democracy. This is a little like when that grizzly bear finally ate Timothy Treadwell: Intellectually, he always knew it was coming. He had to. His very existence was built around that conclusion. But you still can't psychologically prepare for the bear who eats you alive, particularly if the bear wears cornrows."

Great review. And I agree with most of it.

I like this album way way more than I ever expected.
