Converting AVI to MPEG on a Mac?

Hey guys, I've been trying to burn some avis and was using Toast Titanium but the encoding process didn't work at all. From what I've been reading it works a lot better to use another program to encode to mpeg and then burn the dvd. I've attempted using ffmpeg but that didn't work either. Any advice on what program/s to use would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Brian

I think HandBrake could help you... But I don't know for sure. (It's free, so you might as well try.)

Ffmpegx works great. You'll probably have to download the three codecs it asks you to download, which is a snap.

EDIT: I noticed, that you said you tried it in your post. If you try to convert and the progress bar instantly says that it is done, you will need to download the codecs.

Thanks for the suggestions ast. I downloaded Visual Hub and it's worked perfectly. And matt in the east, go take a long walk off a short pier.

For the record, "mpeg streamclip" is a great freebie utility for transcoding/recompression.

As great as it was, VisualHub is no more. A brief explanation is available on the official site: http://techspansion.com/ . So until the open source projects that the programmer began bear fruit, I'd recommend ffmpegX first, then MPEGStreamClip (Or pirate VisualHub...on second thought, that's my number one suggestion).

    ...I miss VisualHub already.

I don't know why nobody uses them, but VLC Player has a lot of conversion features. Why I converted The Fall from AVI to MPEG-4 just this morn.
