Thread: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

    Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I know this show isn't on anymore, but I have been going through and rewatching it recently and I had forgotten just how much I loved this show. I know Matt mentioned on NNF that he was a fan and thought there are probably others on this board that are as well. So to start off, what are peoples favorite episodes?

I am not sure about my favorite episode. The musical one has to be up there of course. The high school graduation was an amazing one.

For anyone interested the first season is on Hulu. If you have never seen it you can get started there. Though the show really gets better as it goes along and the characters develope.

I really like "The Zeppo". It think it had some of the best writing of any episode in the entire series. Also the episode with John Ritter is fantastic.

I backed into this show. I saw the movie Serenity and really liked it, so I watched Firefly and really enjoyed that, and then had several people in the LA comedy community that I needed to watch Buffy, too, or I would be considered a huge douche.

I watched the whole series in about 3 months. It's amazing to see it change from a monster-of-the-week show with an overarching story line to the show that it becomes in season three, which is one of my favorite seasons of TV ever: right up there with season 4 of The Wire and the last season of Deadwood.

My favorite episode of Buffy is any one in which Willow cries: when Oz leaves, when she finds out that Faith and Xander slept together, etc. Alyson Hannigan is a world-class weeper. But if pressed, my favorite episodes are when Xander and Willow ran around together for a few episodes behind Oz's and Cordelia's backs.

I even have a favorite moment: It's at the end of the first episode of season 2. Buffy has smashed the bones of The Master after stopping the ceremony to revive him. And then the little evil boy is standing by himself amid all the bone dust.

My favorite moment also involves that boy. It was at the end of the first episode with Spike and Drucilla, when Spike gets pissed of at the boy and throws him into the cage and puts him into the sunlight. That instantly made Spike my favorite character.

    I love Buffy.

The Body is a tearjerker episode. I like anything that has to do with Willow or Evil Willow (bored now) and even Super-Evil Veiny Witch Willow. I think Buffy and Angel should be together and NOT Buffy and Spike. I liked when Harmony had minions and everyone laughed. I love all the Halloween episodes. And I love Spike.

I really love the episodes that dealt with mass chaos. The first halloween episode, the episode where every girl loved Xander, the magic band candy episode and the one where no one could talk are the ones that come to mind. The show did a great job when there was a thousand different things going on at once and despite the fact that most of them were unimportant, they were all really entertaining.

That was while I liked "The Zepo". The hellmouth opens in the episode and yet we barely even see anything about that. And I like that despite the fact that the rest of the gang thinks that they saved the world, it is really only because of what Xander does that they are able to save it.

I really like Xander centric episodes.

I also really liked the one where Buffy falls in love with the guy with the magic jacket. I boy Dawn also has a crush on. It is one of the few times Buffy gets to be overtly sexual. Also, The Breeders are that episode.

"Hush" is one of the best because of how different it was. So many great gags played out with the idea of only having visuals to work with. The entire show was consistently entertaining for a long time. And I agree that the Halloween episodes were great too.

    Re: Buffy the Vampire slayer

I love Buffy!!!! No really I was a big Buffy dork I used to read the buffy books to hold me over in between seasons.

Some of my fave eps have always been the two parters, S2 Surprise/Innocence, Becoming Pt 1 & 2. I aslo love when they veered from the traditional eps Doppelgangland the alternate sunnydale universe where Willow & Xander are vamps; Hush the silent ep, Fool For Love the spike flashback ep, Restless where we see the dreams of the scooby gang. The ep where Faith and Buffy switch bodies. I could name more...

This show also made me cry occasionally and I don't cry at shows unless they invoilve animated animals dying or something. The body and the gift had me crying as did Becoming part 2 if you didn't get a lil teary after Buffy had to kill Angel and then that Sarah Mclachlan song was playing then I don't know...

Did anyone ever see the 1/2 hr unaired pilot, oh man that willow in it was horrible...

When the show ended I made this cheesy collage for my best friend

FYI the new comic books are pretty good.

I was just about to add that the comic book has been really good. They really got the rhythm of the dialogue back by the third comic book or so. The Faith substory was really good: I could actually picture that one as a TV episode. So it's been good. ... I really have liked it. ... Glad they did it. ...

BUFFY NAILED A HOT ASIAN CHICK!!!! TWICE!

I don't know if the other Willow was bad, but there was something too poignant about Cordelia slamming Willow and her cheap clothes when Willow was a fat girl. I remember having a really strong response to how harsh it was.

One of my favorite parts about this show was the cinematography. In particular, I love how the the show could be scary without ever being jumpy and I think that had a large part to do with how they used negative space to make it so you always knew where the monster was gonna be.

Also, am I the only one who was horrified by the ventriloquist dummy episode. The ending of that episode was fantastic, but up until you find out the dummy is the good guy, I found that to be the scariest episode of the entire series.

Also, anytime Giles sang it was amazing.

the show is also highly quotable. I still use lines from the show in random conversation.

    "Insane troll logic" - Xander
"Grrr Argh"- the mutany enemy end credits I say this when something goes wrong
"What's your childhood trauma?" - Cordelia
"gee can you vague that up for me?" Buffy
"My whole life just flashed before my eyes. I've got to get me a life" Xander
"I mock you with my monkey pants" Oz
."..hootenanny - choc full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny" - Oz

Also anyone play the Buffy PS2 game it is pretty cool you get to fight as the different characters. It is like years old but I totally loved it..

There are some great episodes, and I'm inclined to agree with a few people's choices for best episode, but nothing will ever beat The Prom. The conversation in the sewer, the quick flashback as to why the guy hatched his plan, Oz's reaction to the bad review Dingoes got, Xander buying the dress, Giles telling Wes he had the maturity of a blueberry scone, "He's just a prop comic", the award presentation. . . it had everything that made the show great.

Did anyone catch the clip from the aborted cartoon? Looks like it would have been kinda fun.

    Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I've seen the first three seasons and dug certain elements of the show (I like Firefly and Serenity a lot more, though).

One thing that bothered me about the show: why didn't people move out of Sunnydale? With people dropping like flies you figure property values would drop with them. Instead of "White Flight" you'd have "Everyone who isn't a Vampire/Werewolf/Witch Flight." Then you could have a storyline where Buffy's Mom wants to move (Sunnydale should look pretty ghetto by season three) but Buffy has to convince her to stay while still keeping her slayer status a secret.

Then drug dealers other criminal types move in. Giles knows how to put up with ghosts but not someone like Marlo Stanfield. He gets his ass beat and then Buffy is left Watcher-less.

I don't know, this is the stupid stuff I think about.

Shit I forgot about his punk rock days. Yeah maybe he could hold his own, remembering how things were on the East End of London.

Buffy is great. It was on at the perfect age for me to ignore it and think it sucked without watching it while it was on. I'd echo Hush as my favorite episode.
For a show with so much structure and with constantly raised stakes, its amazing how long they were able to juggle the show being good. It's a shame that Sarah Michelle Gellar will probably never be in anything good again.
