    Boardwalk Empire

In two weeks (September 19th) on HBO, "Boardwalk Empire" premieres, and I am pretty sure it's going to be awesome. Created by Terence Winter (of "The Sopranos"), executive produced (and the first episode directed) by Martin Scorsese, starring Steve Buscemi (and many other great actors).

Saw these videos a couple weeks ago. Some TV shows you just know you're going to buy on DVD. This looks really good and will hopefully spur some new discussions on prohibition. Can't wait, I didn't know it was premiering so soon though.

Is there any possibility this will be less than phenomenal? My expectations are higher for this than any other new drama series ever. It looks like Deadwood meets the Sopranos and I WANT TO GO TO THERE.

I had to choose between keeping Showtime or HBO. Despite my love of Weeds, Nurse Jackie and Dexter, I chose HBO for this show... I'm so glad it looks like it won't disappoint!!

I really enjoyed it and it will almost certainly be a great series but it felt a lot like Sopranos in a different setting in this first episode. The similarities between Michael Pitts character and Christopher Moltisanti were particularly noticable.

I also really enjoyed it but have a complaint. Specifically, two of the clunkiest exposition scenes I've encountered: the speech to the Women's group, and the scene just before the New Year with all the bosses. Just "This is the exact historical context spouted to all of you", but after these two scenes, I was sooo on board.

How they gonna tease our dick showing Omar for just a second like that? Messed up.

Loved it! I knew I was going to, but still. I love getting sucked into these different period pieces - I couldn't care less about this stuff when I first learned about American history in school because I was a dumb kid, but lately it's become the most interesting material for me.

    Definitely gonna' be a hit.

This thing is the kind of thing where I hate that it exists because I know that it will end. I really just love everything about it. I didn't even realize Scorcese had directed the pilot until the end... and then I was like... OOOOOHHHHH... that's why the musical cues were so fucking amazing.

I thought it was kind of slow and confusing. The dialogue was unexceptional and often worse. I didn't get the thing with the Italian guy getting shot. Also, too much CGI. At times I thought it looked great, but then other times I thought I was watching Tron. But the cast is great and the subject matter's potentially great and the show's still way above average. I'm sure I'll stick with it for however long it lasts, but so far I'm not willing to commit to calling this not a disappointment.

There's just no pleasing a funny clown.

I thought it was good. Man, it looks expensive too. The set is in Greenpoint, Bklyn.

I thought it was good. I just want it to be great. And I get scared because a) Marky Mark, b) not sure I see significant originality, and c) Martin Scorsese tends to disappoint me. I'm very, very happy it exists and and that it's been renewed, but I'm not ready to buy into the hype yet.

We just recently got HBO for this show, and well... you summed it up.

At $30 Million (although I've read in places it was up to $50M) this was also the most expensive pilot ever. Yes, more expensive than Lost, which cost about $12M for the 2 part pilot.

Carnivále got shit-canned partly because it cost a million an episode to make. That's the risk of making period pieces I guess. It sure looked good though!

If you think I'm somehow the final word in what's good or bad, then you might have a point. Otherwise, I disagree.

    Just goofing around.

Specifically what I loved, in greater detail, was the way the music was used... it would come up sooner or stay later on things in really interesting, Scorcese specific, ways.*

Holy moly Michael Stuhlbarg was great in the pilot.
