    Austin Recommendations

Hi everyone. Not everyone, just the Austin ASTers. I'm going to be in Austin from Sunday afternoon until Thursday morning. Suggestions?

    Hey Jon,

Do you do stand-up? Sorry if I know you -- I'm not always sure who's who on AST by first names alone. Anyhoot, if you do stand-up there's a show at Cap City on Tuesday night called Mish Mash that you could probably get on. I'm hosting it and will ask if there are spots open if you want. Audience attendance varies but there will be other funny comics in the show who you can drink with before, during and after, if you drink. Don't know of any shows Monday or Wednesday this week.

Food: Magnolia Cafe, Kerby Lane, the Salt Lick, Curra's Mexican Grill.

Bars: If you like honky tonk-type bars, you can try the Broken Spoke, the Horseshoe lounge (both in the southern part of town) or the Poodle Dog lounge (mid-town).

Food & bar & recreation all in one: the Alamo Drafthouse. They show movies and serve food and drinks at your seats. The Alamo downtown usually has novelty nights during the week (old scary movies or Christmas movies or what not movies). The other Alamo locations screen first-run movies, if that's what you call movies you can see in regular theaters.

Outdoors: the Town Lake hike and bike trail. It's right in the middle of downtown and it's pretty groovy.

I could go on and on about Austin all damn night -- I fucking love this town. But I mostly go to shows and the same 4 restaurants so if you want a more diverse events calendar, name some things you like to do and I'll ask around.

    God bless Texas,

    Martha

Thursday night is open mic at the Velveeta room. I had fun when I hit that up a couple of weeks ago. Friday night is the open mic at the Coldtowne Theater. I'm getting into Austin on Friday and I've signed up already for that show so at the least you should come out and I'll by you a drink. Well, that place is actually BYOB so I'll just give you a drink.

There's a place next to the Velveeta Room called, I think, Casino El Camino or something like that. Its pretty famous for its burgers (I saw a thing on them on Food Network) Haven't had a chance to check them out myself but I hear they are fantastic.

This thread is making want to visit Austin again. Perhaps over Christmas break I'll head down, crash on a friends couch and hit a couple of those open mics.

Whenever I'm down there, I always hit Waterloo and Cheapo's Records. Conan's Pizza is also awesome, especially if you are a nerd. I also had perhaps the best brunch ever at this place called Starlite.

I don't, and would undoubtedly embarrass both myself and you if I took this opportunity to start, but I appreciate the other recommendations.

Thanks, everyone. If anyone else wants to throw in I'd appreciate it.

Also I should note that I mean next Sunday, not today/yesterday.

So you're getting here a week from today? We're doing a free show at ColdTowne that Sunday, at 7:00. It's called Stool Pigeon, but it's basically the same format as ASSSCAT, except that the "celebrity monologists" aren't as famous. That's the only ColdTowne show happening while you're in town, but it should be a pretty good one.

Now that I've plugged my improv show, the Drafthouse Ritz is definitely the thing to check out. There are some good movies playing that week, and the food is great.

If you're a beer drinker, the Draughthouse (different from the Drafthouse) and the Ginger Man are, as far as I know, the bars with the widest selection.

I've only spent one night in Austin (back in '94), but I fell totally in love with the place and I hope to go back someday.

I'm obviously totally unqualified to recommend things in or around Austin, but I'm glad to learn from Cameron's post that Waterloo Records is still around. That's one of the best record stores I've ever been in. I remember finding an impossible-to-find (at the time, anyway) CD of the classic punk album "Germfree Adolescents" by X-Ray Spex at Waterloo and I always think of that great store when I listen to that.

I've asked around and no one seems to know about this trailer food court. Is it like a lot full of food trucks? I must find it!

If i'm correct the name of the burrito place was scorchee's and had a little devil for a mascot as well as some of the tastiest tacos and burritos I've ever tasted. I guess ask for scorchee

Yeah, it's Torchy's Tacos (delicious), but there are more than one Torchies... the trailer park has more than Torchies too.. it's on South 1st just south of Downtown. It's not amazing, but all Torchy's have great tacos... Despite it's name, I suggest the Dirty Sanchez.

I just realized the site was posted so this post is pointless, but I'm leaving it... take that.

Also, I saw Marty do standup Friday and he was grrrrrrrreat!

    .
WHAT? They've turned the Ritz into a Drafthouse??? I've been away too long. That sounds awesome.

I guess I'll have to check it out when I'm in Austin headlining the Velv Valentine's Day weekend.

If you have a time machine, head to Armadillo World Headquarters.

Otherwise, it's virtually impossible to do uncool stuff in Austex.

Charles Star has nothing to add to this conversation because they don't let his kind into Texas.

And Thanks RegularKarate. It was good to see you do straight up stand up. Very funny.
