Saw a preview screening of District 9 thanks to fat fucking Harry Knowles. It's basically Murray from Flight of the Conchords as a badass sci-fi hero.
So, AWESOME.
And there is the best alien name ever.

On Pitchfork.tv's ONE WEEK ONLY this week is a documentary I heartily reccomend: The Nomi Song about late-70s/early-80s avant-garde performance artist/opera singer/one-time-Bowie-backup-singer/Venture Bros character Klaus Nomi. A fascinating guy who led a fascinating life.
I saw District 9 last night, and LOVED it. I'll most definitely see it again in theaters. It's been a while since I've enjoyed science fiction this much, but Moon and District 9 have reignited my love for the genre.
Obviously, it's for kids, but I got to see Robert Rodriguez's "Shorts" last night and I thought it was pretty enjoyable. I was never a huge fan of the "Spy Kids" movies (and "Sharkboy and Lavagirl" was terrible), but this movie is kind of like "Pulp Fiction" or "Four Rooms" for kids. Not in content, but in format- it's split up into several stories, which are told chronologically out of order, with characters from one story showing up later in another, etc. One story is told before the opening credits, as kind of a pre-movie short, and then that storyline continues throughout the movie as a running joke. It's fun.
Even if you don't have kids, it's enjoyable and has Rodriguez's style to it.
I love the Spy Kids movies (only saw the first two), but what little I saw of Sharkboy and Lavagirl was pretty lame. Cool that this new one is good.
Anyone else nerding it up at the free Avatar footage on Friday? Tickets are pretty much gone but I got 2 in San Diego & I'm planning on seeing it before Thirst. A trip to see 20 minutes of sci-fi footage in IMAX 3-D would be a waste of time by itself, but combining it with Korean vampires makes it socially acceptable.
District 9 was pretty awesome, and it didn't crumble under its weighty ambitions. Great movie.
Expect a District 10 in a few years.
I would seriously despise if the sequel were called District 10, and yes I saw the movie and know there's a District 10.
"(inaudible) I've seen, basically, all of those at this point."

"Yes, but have you ever seen Threen Wolf?"

Yes, but have you ever seen District Threen?
I really hope they don't make a sequel.
And honestly, District 10 is better than District 9 2.
District Next.
Still Districtin'...

^ Awesome.
So I saw an advance screening of World's Greatest Dad. Written/Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait and starring Robin Williams. It was ohmygod good.
Check out the trailer, but do NOT read any reviews; almost every one i've read has given away a MAJOR plot point.
But yeah, wow. It's extremely dark but kind of sweet, and surprisingly thought-provoking. Hilarious, thoroughly unpredictable, and another adjective.
One of RW's best performances; he takes the persona he uses in more serious movies and kind of turns it on its head. And it has Daryl Sabara (from Spy Kids!) as an unforgettably horrible teenager.
A couple of nitpicks aside, it's the best comedy i've seen all year, and one of the best i've seen in the last few years.
It's on On Demand and Amazon, and will be rolling out in theaters over the next few weeks.
If anyone has HDNET, this is showing tonight, several times, for free. List of showtimes here
I really think most people on here are gonna love this movie.
