    re: AST Loves Movies

I saw Avatar a few days ago. About half an hour in I wasn't sure if it was really good or really bad. Then Sigourney said something about a flux capacitor (or something like it) and I gave up. The characters, for some reason, just didn't do it for me.

Granted, I didn't see it in 3D, and it did look nice (though they could cut 45 minutes of dragon-flying). The ferngully/dances with wolves comparisons are about right, I'd say.

Also, Up in the Air. It was really much better than I expected.

    ...well, not in 3D.

Most of my problems with it wouldn't have been fixed seeing it in 3D, but I do acknowledge that the things I liked about it would have been even BETTER in 3D. So there!

You need to see it in 3-D. It works better that way.

I turned to my wife during this trailer and said, "Cameron Diaz's face has pretty much reached a tipping point".

As for Avatar, the one thing I didn't expect to think about a movie that cost $500 million to make was that it looked MORE expensive than that. Completely blown away.

My only complaints were; If you're a Latino woman in a James Cameron movie, is it REQUIRED that you be a butch-lesbo machine gunning helicopter pilot? And Giovanni Ribisi's character actually counteracted the 3D every time he was on screen because it was so one dimensional.

As far as blue people movies go, it sure beat the hell out of seeing Dr. Manhattan's big blue crank for 2 hrs. and 40 mins...

You can say that about every single character in the movie.

I rented this because of the high praise it got from Brasky, Cameron, ASR, Luxury, and Shane. All I can say is, really?

Might be the most annoying, phony hipster film I've seen since Juno. Was I supposed to like anybody in this movie? I wanted to punch Zooey Deschanel in the face for most of it, and I didn't quite get why I was supposed to sympathize with Levitt at all. He didn't get an architect job right out of school, so now he's some kind of huge sellout because he works for a greeting card company now? Boo hoo.

And for a movie trying to make the city it's set in one of the main characters, it was about an hour in before I realized it was L.A.

I also hated the soundtrack, but understand that some people like the whole 'band of beards', 'My Boring Jacket' genre, so I'll let that slide.

    0 out of 10 stars.

Did you turn and say something funny to your wife during the movie? Those are my favorite part of your reviews.

And darryl is right, with that panel of reviewers you might as well watched "Away We Go, on a Boat That Rocked"

I'm not going to see 500 Days since I don't need anything to ruin my opinion of Zooey or Joseph.
