    re: AST Loves Movies

I saw The Invention of Lying last weekend. While I liked it pretty much (Gervais is always funny to me) the movie felt a bit superficial and none of the characters has any real depth or warmth. I know it was a "message movie" (the message being religion is a crock) but I still needed to actually like the characters. One a side note, this movie had more cameos than a Victorian jewelry auction!

I went to the theater to see Inglorious Basterds and missed the first screening so I saw "9" to hold me over till the second screening. I was happy I did, because it was a great movie. It was like a more action-oriented Tim Burton film. Maybe that doesn't sound great...but I am not great at describing movies.

Also Inglorious Basterds was good and blah blah blah

I watched Saw 6 today for some reason. It certainly was a Saw movie. I was disappointed when the black people sitting behind me didn't talk during the movie.

edit: Oh yeah, and Eddie Winslow from Family Matters was in it!

I saw Redbeard today. Toshiro Mifune is like if George Clooney existed 50 years ago, was Japanese, and was even cooler.
    I'm in.

They say you can never fall in love twice.

    They were wrong.

When I first watched "Shaun of the Dead", my life changed. It instantly became my favorite movie without even a doubt in my mind.

When "Hot Fuzz" came out, I was glad that it lived up to the legacy but it still didn't beat "Shaun" for me.

When I first watched "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", I wasn't actually sure if I loved it more than "Shaun" so I let it linger. I later decided they were about neck-and-neck and I would choose one over the other as my favorite movie depending on my mood.

And then came "The Boat That Rocked."

A perfect cast. A perfect soundtrack. A perfect movie. And I really hope you understand that I'm not using ANY of those "perfects" loosely. I mean all of them with every ounce of love my heart has ever been able to muster up. And shut up about opinions because there are no opinions when it comes to true love!

Assuming the re-cut version with 20 minutes removed doesn't ruin the masterpiece, you guys can all check it out on November 13th as "Pirate Radio" and share the love. I doubt any of you will love it as much as I did because this is one of those very personal loves. Something really resonated with me here on an intimate level. I think it was the music. What I have with "The Boat That Rocked" is very special. It's very special and very personal, and you can never have what we have. But I do hope you'll enjoy it. It's like I'm letting my wife kiss you on the cheek.

And my wife is some amazing fusion of Zooey Deschanel, Jessica Alba, Mandy Moore, and January Jones (who, by the way, has a cameo in this movie!)

I just watched Shrink starring Kevin Spacey (with a bit part by Robin Williams!!).

If any are thinking of watching it, do not.

Basically it's Kevin Spacey smoking pot and there are some other people who are sad and then he is sad and then those people get happy and then he is happy.

In the end, however, I was not happy!

The trailer made me roll my eyes, with its cliched and hacky "rock and roll will never die!" and "the man can't shut us down!" bullshit. Is the movie actually like that (I know trailers are often deceiving)?

    re: AST Loves Movies

Very little of it is actually like that at all. It's mostly just them dicking around on the ship with a small sub-plot of the government trying to shut them down that doesn't come into full play until near the end, anyway. It's very episodic in nature and it's a blast to watch. The stuff you're talking about is very brief and is pulled off very well regardless, even if there is one very cliche scene (and you'll know it.)

Do you have any idea why they did this? I've been wondering about that ever since I started seeing newly edited trailers (I've been seeing the trailer for this for what seems like almost a year, by the way), with "Pirate Radio" now as the title instead of "The Boat That Rocked".

Endless delays and retitling a movie usually = stinker. I'm willing to give this movie a shot, since I like Richard Curtis as a writer.

The best reason I can grasp: It's very long. It clocked in at two hours and six minutes for me. The original cut before the UK release was apparently around THREE hours so there's a boatload (ha) of deleted scenes and entirely removed subplots like stuff with a rival pirate radio station and character backstories.

So now they're removing even more stuff and making it 20 minutes shorter.

I think the reason for the delays probably had a lot to do with trying to find a nice way to make it a little shorter for American audiences, since I think all execs assume we have the attention spans of gnats. Honestly I would love to see the original three hour cut because I was enjoying every single minute.

A Christmas Carol was actually good. I went in not excited for it at all and was surprised. And they were not afraid of making it dark when it needed to be. And one scene in particular was bordering on kind of disturbing actually. But the writing and acting were all good, and there were no unnecessarily corny parts except for the whole "God bless us, everyone" line. But that one is kind of expected.
