    Apple's Stitcher?

New app seems to be a one stop hub for podcasts on apple brand devices.

Haven't tried it yet but I imagine I will. I wonder if the casts that have issues with Stitcher be more open to this one, seeing as it probably tracks their numbers in concert with your standard iTunes system.

You guys who make/distribute podcasts, what say you?

I guess that explains why they jacked up the way podcasts download on the iPhone last week. Instead of going to the bottom of the list, they now go to the top, which is annoying, because I just want to fall asleep to the latest podcast and not have it start to play though the previous hundred episodes.

This app apparently replaces the Podcast section of the Music app in iOS 6.

I downloaded it. I like it. I rescind my rage at how things are sorted. Makes sense in the new app.

Still no password-protected RSS feed support

No way to add feeds manually at all, in fact

The sorting is still pretty annoying. I guess it makes sense that the latest ep is at the top, and the addition of the sleep timer is nice, especially the "when this ep ends" option. But if they're going to organize it newest to oldest, I wish it would always stop at the end of an episode, like iTunes does. It doesn't really matter if I'm catching up on some 99% Invisibles or Radiolab shorts, those can go new to old for all I care, but if I have a good chunk of time I like to listen to two Jordan Jesse Gos in a row and it's nice that it fades into the next episode without me having to pull out my phone and navigate to the next episode while driving. Other than that minor annoyance, it looks pretty good.

So it seems to be downloading random old episodes of my subscribed shows. That's fun.

Also there's a button to sort them old->new or vice versa in the app

Well I'll be damned. You just click the header and it brings up options. I didn't even think to do that. Still thinking in terms of the music app.

It is really nice that you can adjust it on a podcast by podcast basis. All my complaints are officially rescinded. Not only was the problem not a problem, but it was an improvement.

Also, I've been wanting a podcast subscription on iOS instead of going through iTunes for a long time. It didn't make sense that there wasn't one, since the option was there to manually download episodes straight to the iPhone.

I really like the large artwork tiles interface rather than the list. And it is really nice that you can spatially arrange the shows at will. It pleases my slightly OCD mind to be able to group all MaxFun shows and all Earwolf shows together, make sure Doug Loves Movies and Comedy Film Nerds are paired up, 99% Invisible is next to Radiolab, etc.

Journalism lab takes closer look at this podcast app Includes a quote from Earwolf's Jett Ulrich!!

I do hate how exclusive Apple soft/hardware is and in a couple of years I plan on moving to android mode, but for now this is a nice lil app and I expect to get some use from it.

I installed it and it promptly tried to download the last hundred episodes of Bullseye. I enjoy Jesse Thorn's broadcasting very much, but I don't really need to listen to all those episodes again.

    Re: Apple's Stitcher?

I just now figured out that I can delete the podcast app, and by turning my ipod off and on return podcasts to their rightful place in the music app.

I am glad to have my podcast playlists back.

I downloaded this app a while back and it's terrible. The interface is not like the regular music app and, from what I remember, I couldn't control it via double-tap while my screen was locked.

Also, it would start to play at random when I would exit certain apps on my phone. I don't need other people to hear random excerpts of Improv4Humans after I've checked my email.

It's actually massively improved since it first came out (and months and months afterward). It's actually usable now. All of those things (apart from it not being like the regular music app) are fixed.

Someone on the board suggested Downcast as a podcast app, it was a very good suggestion.

I'll try that. Finally deleted the apple podcast app cause my confusion with it was leaving tons of content on my iTouch that I thought I had removed. I was just going to continue downloading casts to my desktop and uploading them as 'music' in iTunes.

Freed up a shit ton of memory on my ipod touch by deleting that app, too. Might not be a problem for new iphones but the difference is night and day on anything older.
