Thread: Apple talk

    Apple talk

I forget what the old thread was called, but I like discussing what Apple is doing with their computer lines and such (iPhone/touch + mobile app talk can stay over here).

    For example:

    They read my letters!

I am 1000% ready to buy a Macbook Touch, but I'm worried that they'll cost like $6,000.00 each. Even the tiny travel cintiq costs a cool $1,000.00, and the big boys are the price of a laptop themselves.

There's talk that whatever Apple unveils next will be offered at minimal profit for them. So who knows, maybe we'll see a $700 MacBook Touch.

...I hope those rumors are true.

From your forum post to Jobs' ears.

So I know Apple's kind of caught up in the iPhone 3G shitstorm right now, what with it not being very good and MobileMe not working properly, but is there any news on the size issue? 16 gigs is barely more than a flash drive anymore.

    Re: Apple talk

I think Apple will go one of two ways with the MacBook next. Either a more robust, refined multitouch trackpad to enable some of the pretty thing from the iPhone (sliding through pictures and albums) to be on the laptop. OR, tablet MacBook. I think it's more likely we see the amped up multitouch trackpad first.

    Re: Apple talk

Now they're saying the trackpad will be made of glass. This has some wondering if the trackpad will be a second, iPhone-sized screen. But that would be expensive.

I think the next MacBooks and MBPs will only have minor tweaks, like aluminum cases across the board and multi-touch gestures on the trackpad. Then they'll come out with a 7" tablet and homies will be like whaa-a-a?1?!...erweh-erweh-chicky-chk-chk-cha! (because you'll be able to deejay all multi-touch stylee with the tablet)

    Re: Apple talk

No AT&T cell service here in Montana, soooo, no iPhones! But I got an iPod touch, and every time I use it I am just amazed at how stinking slick it works. If they do come out with a touch screen MacBook, I would definitely be in line for it. The touch interface works really well for a lot of things, so combining the touch with the keyboard would be pretty slick.

Of course there have been touch screen computers for years, but I would trust Apple to do it right and can't wait to see what they come out with.

No wonder Def Jam signed you to a contract, Mister Beatbox!

I'm not crazy Apple, but if they came out with a tablet, I would buy it.

    Re: Apple talk

I don't think I would be to hip on a tablet from Mac. I know some people who have tablet's for other purposes and their opinions range to "meh..." to "this thing SUCKS!"

The glas surfaced trackpad is an interesting thought. I think a screen under it would be stupid expensive. That doesn't mean they wont use it for a multitouch interface for the regular screen. They might be taking the touch technology from the iPhone and just translating it to the laptop...

In other news, HP has been advertising a touch screen workstation that looks pretty slick. Looks like they're trying to beat apple to the home with this technology. Microsoft's Surface still looks WAY too expensive.

    Re: Apple talk

Yeah, HP has that desktop touchscreen and Samsung has that portable thing-a-ma-jig that Bob Odenkirk is helping advertise that has a touchscreen, and apparently they're going to market it to deejays. But no one beats Apple when it comes to selling the general public on a new technology -- they make it slick, elegant, seamless and dead simple, and then they market the fuck out of it until people start to feel like they can't live without it. Keep in mind there were other MP3 players before the iPod, and other touchscreen phones before the iPhone... It's not just the idea, or the technology -- it's the execution that sets Apple apart.

The Air and the newest MBPs all have multitouch gestures borrowed from the iPhone already (like pinch/zoom and rotate). The move to glass might just be because current MacBook trackpads start looking kinda worn down after a year or two of use.

It would be, but anything less would be a disappointment. Would the pricepoint drop if the trackpad only doubled as a kind of dedicated file browser? Or am I just making up tech values?

Anyway, I hope it is an iPhone style trackpad, and that this is the first step towards a legit Macbook DS. How awesome would a 17 inch touchscreen be? With a fully customizable keyboard and stylus interface?

I'm just noticing this lately, but what's the deal with Apple's laptops having such dinky HD options? They top out at like 300 gigs and even then it's only 4200 rpm. Even a cursory sweep of Newegg shows I can get a better drive for a fraction of the cost. What gives?

My G5 workhorse is giving me the dreaded kernel panic error. I'm halfway sure it's just the RAM I got from Crucial a few months ago (anyone know their return policy?) but just in case I'm going to boot the fuckfram.

Lifetime free replacement. Give them a call. They'll send you the new ram and you ship the old ram back in the box withe Crucial covering the postage. One of the best return policies in the industry.

I saw a kid sitting in his stroller eating an apple, using both his hands while chomping away. He looked like a chipmunk. So cute!
