40th annual san diego comic con - july 22-26, 2009!

is it that time again? well, today is "hotel reservation day", so maybe.

comic-con is the nerdiest gathering of all the nerd gatherings. this year is the 40th one. today is march 19, and 4-day passes are already sold out - this year will be big. i would suggest that if you want to go, buy your individual day passes as soon as possible. you can find information on comic-con, hotel rooms, etc. at the official site, http://www.comic-con.org/cci/index.php .

i post a thread about it every year because i consistently have more fun and meet more cool people each time i go. this is not something only for people who like comic books - there's tons of stuff if you like sci-fi, horror, fantasy, comedy, animation, film, etc. it's a giant event i think everyone should experience at least once.

information on events/panels won't be up until just before the event, but past years have had things like performances from tenacious d, retrospectives on tv funhouse, several panels with the cast/writers of the sarah silverman program, etc. tim and eric have done a free outdoor picnic/party each year for the last few years that's lots of fun.

here are 100 pictures from last year's con to get you excited. i am no liezl but i would say it is worth it to go even if all you do is take pictures.

Which is why I will be attending this year.
Also, I want to experience the sweaty nerd funk I've heard so much about.

I don't know about comic con anymore. But Tomicon/Awesome-Con is getting pretty amazing...

How about a proper meetup this year? I'll skip anything that isn't Lost-related to tie on a good daydrunk with some fellow ASTers.

they're announcing programming today - here's some highlights!

    Friday, July 24 -

The BBC PANEL: THE MIGHTY BOOSH
    4:45 – 5:45 p.m.
    Location: Room 6A
Cult comedy favorite and BAFTA-nominated, The Mighty Boosh, comes to Comic-Con for the first time to celebrate the airing of all three seasons on Adult Swim, and the BBC’s DVD release, just two days before the convention begins. Inspired by the Perrier Comedy Award-winning live comedy show, creators-stars Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding, along with actors Michael Fielding, Rich Fulcher and Dave Brown. The hit UK comedy series follows crazy zookeepers Howard Moon and Vince Noir and was described by The San Jose Mercury News as “an acid-trip fantasy-comedy [that] is seriously deranged and seriously funny.”

    Saturday, July 25 -

ADULT SWIM: Series Development and The Venture Bros.
    6:00 – 7:15 p.m.
    Location: 6DE
Moderator: Keith Crofford, vice president of production Adult Swim
Fans will get the chance to hear from the Adult Swim development team and get a first look at upcoming Adult Swim programming. Nick Weidenfeld, director of development for Adult Swim and Matt Harrigan, executive producer/series writer for Adult Swim will give highlights of what’s in the tube for fall 2009. Then, Jackson Publick (co-creator), Doc Hammer (co-creator), Jon Schnepp (co-director), James Urbaniak (voice of Dr. Venture) and Mike Sinterniklaas (voice of Dean Venture) discuss the hit animated Adult Swim series The Venture Bros. and give fans insight into the future of the series.

Looks like Doug Benson and Brian Posehn will be at Balboa Theatre Friday the 24th. It's an easy walk from the Convention Center. That is the same night that Tim and Eric are at the 4th & B.

Also Demitri Martin will be at the Spreckles Theatre that Saturday, also an easy walk.

Anyone going while in town for the Con?

This is a desperate and maybe slightly inappropriate request, but would any ASTer allow me to pay them to pick me up something? I've been trying incredibly hard to find a copy of this increasingly rare Steve Purcell Sam & Max sketchbook The Effigy Mound, and Telltale Games assures me they'll have a big stack there at original list price. These things usually sell at around 100 dollars online, so this is sort of a "last chance, nerd-o" situation. I guess message me if you want to work out some details. Also, have fun.

    There's this panel, too.

Saturday 5:30-6:30 American Original: Birth of an Original— Jeff Katz (Booster Gold, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash), president and founder of American Original, Marc Silvestri (Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia), and Matt Hawkins (president of Top Cow) give you the 411 on the genesis of their "Nerd Machine"! Find out what's coming from American Original first, and get introduced to their mix of talent from a spectrum of comics, film, television, sports entertainment, and animation! Plus enough surprise guests to fill a three-ring circus! Room 7AB

Katz, a former VP of production at Fox who has also worked for DC and Wildstorm as a writer, recently launched American Original, a comic book publishing and film development company that plans to launch new franchises in print for eventual adaptation to film, television, video games and web series. As editor of "The Comedy Death Ray Anthology," Scott will be tasked with recruiting and overseeing both established and up-and-coming comedians to write stories for the series, the first of which could hit newsstands by the end of the year. Scott tells me he has verbal commitments from a few comedians already, and promises "the lineup will be what you've come to expect from Comedy Death-Ray - some favorites, some newcomers, some surprises!" For his part, Katz sees this as an opportunity to fill "a giant hole in the [comic book] marketplace," and hopes the CDR Anthology will become "what 'National Lampoon' was in its heyday." Look for more details in an announcement from Comic Con next month.

Re: 40th annual san diego comic con - july 22-26, 2009!

I'm a comics editor so Comic-Con is part of my job, but it's still really cool to go every year.

I'll be slinging funnybooks at BOOM! Studios' booth #2543. Come by and pick-up The Muppet Show, Farscape, Mark Waid's Irredeemable, etc. I probably won't have time to for a meet-up if it's during regular con hours, but please stop by and say "hey!"

I'm also hosting a panel about the Farscape comics I edit:

2:30-3:30 BOOM!: Farscape Comics— BOOM! Studios' best-selling sold-out Farscape line of comics are the surprise hit of 2009! Farscape creator and comics writer Rockne O'Bannon and writer Keith R. A. DeCandido offer for an intensive discussion about the past, present, and future of this enduring sci-fi franchise. If you are a 'scaper don't miss this panel. Big announcements will be made! I'll be there Saturday and hanging out with people. You guys can be some of those people if you really want to be. Maybe I'll see some of you at Awesomecon, even if I don't know what you look like.

the t&e perfomance is not free - 25 bucks, but after fees its more like 36. (if you want free t&e go to awesomecon - not only is it free, but they'll have hot dogs/burgers/veggie equivalents for free) the boosh perfomance is 5 dollars in advance, 10 at the door. the robot chicken thing is free, and apparently they'll even be running a free shuttle from the convention center.

Are you always this boring and pointless, or do you save it up for your posts here?

Tim and Eric are two talentless unfunny bastards. I must constantly state this as everyone else is just as retarded as they are and therefore too stupid to realize this fact.
