Yeah, I listened to it, and I also listened to The Icehouse Chronicles where Dane Cook appeared a few days after the "incident".
Part of me understands where Dane is coming from, and then I also understand where TJ was coming from. I also saw some tweets after the show from people saying they enjoyed Dane's show, so who knows really. I think TJ was just on a twitter rant, and he took it a bit too far.
Rant or not, my takeaway was that I now like TJ Miller a LOT more now. Dane being a rude misogynistic ass isn't brand new information.
Twitter is a dangerous forum for anyone, especially when one is pissed off. I also think that's why Twitter is great. I don't think TJ Miller crossed any lines, in fact it was kinda awesome.
I thought Miller explained himself well when talking to Holmes, but most importantly, those two converse well together. Miller doesn't allow Holmes to interrupt him (he does that a lot) and they had a great chat. It's obvious they're friends. I think that was the best "You Made It Weird" podcast so far.
"Nobody ever knows the fucking name of the show! People are like 'I really wanna do that Weird Times With Pat Helms!' Fuck you, man." - Pete
"Actually, Pat's show is great." - Nick Kroll
I think TJ came off pretty well in the episode. The only thing that annoyed me was that he seemed to want to sterilize things by saying "Why are people mad? I have a right to say these things." If you're going to say things, people might get upset by them and I think the excuse of "Well, I'm just some jackass anyway, so why would you bother getting mad at me?" is disrespectful to other peoples' emotions. With that said, it's totally understandable that he might want to defend himself because the incident was so recent.
Who's mad? I haven't heard anything, by which I mean no one has said anything on this site.
I'm soooo hooked on this podcast. But I'm ending early each time they discuss religion. Maybe I'll learn to love it like I learned to love Maron's intro's?
every once in a while the term 'space talk from dimension eugene!' will pop into my head out of nowhere.
It would be different if he were trying to convert people, but he's just talking about a particular way he was raised, and seems completely open to listen to other viewpoints on it. How anyone can be so angry and disgusted that they would stop listening is just ridiculous to me.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.
As a non-believer, the god talk is one of my favorite parts of the show. Don't stop Pete!
Yeah, I'm with this. I think Pete just legitimately enjoys religious discussions of all sorts. I'm a fairly militant non-believer, and he's open-minded and charming enough to make all religious conversations easily listenable. KEEP IT COMING, PETE!
On a side note: I'm seeing Pete in Chicago tonight! I'm really really excited about it, he's been becoming one of my favorites lately what with the podcast and his album and everything.
Where is he performing tonight?
The Thune interview was especially fun for me because of the religious aspect. It was great hearing funny people I like mention all those buzzwords ("testimony") and references to worship tunes from my childhood/early teens, some of which I'd forgotten. I like hearing Pete lament that separation from the world he grew up in, if only because I felt that, too. Even when you get out, you still love a lot of those people and seek their approval, and it's sad when you figure out you can't commit to the life the rest of your family is happy with. It's comforting to hear him deal with it and get other people's perspectives.
I enjoy the religious talk as well. I was completely surprised by Coulier's non-belief (or tremendous doubt; I don't want to put words in his mouth). There's something about clean comics that just immediately makes me think Christianity.
The Dave Coulier episode is the only one I haven't listened to all the way through. I find him a little grating and shut it off before he made me retroactively dislike Full House (if watching Full House didn't make me dislike Full House, I doubt a Dave Coulier interview can). I'll go back to it eventually.
I think the Kroll and Peretti episodes have been my favorites so far. Pete was saying in his AV Club interview the other day that he wants the episodes to come off like you're just overhearing a restaurant conversation. I think those two did the best job of striking that cord. That said, I also loved the recent Eugene Mirman episode just by virtue of him being Eugene Mirman. They're all great though. Pete is clearly always having fun which goes a long way.
I definitely agree with Michael Williamson and Scamboogah about the religious discussion. Pete has said repeatedly he's unsure of his beliefs and likes hearing what other people think. I don't know how that can come across as preachy or anything you'd dislike so much you'd actively hate it.
I find my mind drifting during the discussions of religion. I definitely don't hate it, but I find myself fast forwarding through it. It's just hard for me to relate since none of my grandparents were religious let alone my parents. Just isn't part of my life.
