Re: WTF with Marc Maron (podcast)

I've only recently been initiated to the WTF Podcast, and although I find it very entertaining, I'm still getting used to Maron's very peculiar style (I hadn't been exposed to his stand-up before). At first I was turned off by how self-absorbed his interviews were, and I found his sharp lack of self-esteem to be a little embarrassing, but I'm starting to realize that this is part of his charm. Any back episodes that you folks would recommend?

the live UCB tapings of WTF are good featuring comedians such as doug benson, maria bamford, chris hardwick and many others!

I guess this is kind of an appropriate place to tell this story. I checked out Jerusalem Syndrome at my university library in my senior year. I returned it, but they said they couldn't find it and were going to charge me over two hundred dollars for it, and said they wouldn't let me graduate until I paid it. Then they found it.

Also, I meant library, not bookstore, which I've edited.

I've only listened to a few of these so far (I feel like I have so many podcasts to catch up on, which is not helping me in my resolution to live a less sedentary lifestyle... that's what iPods are for, though, right? ANYWAY).

I found the podcast while Googling Nick Kroll, which is something I used to do creepily often, and listened to his episode of WTF - and the one where he was in character as El Chupacabra... both were GREAT (I also found Kevin Pollak's Chat Show via Nick Kroll's twitter - but Kroll just repeated most of what he said on WTF... it's like only four things have ever happened to him or something). I also listened to Wyatt Cenac's episode of WTF, which was awesome.

I'm going to listen to the Maria Bamford/Doug Benson episode next because I LOVE THEM.

Yes, this is yet another loquacious way of saying AWESOME WORK! and I LOVE YOUR PODCAST...

Also, can we request more cat stories???

Same here - I wasn't THAT familiar with Maron's stand up before the WTF podcast, but loved his rants on the show. I have a THING for self-deprecatory humor and narcissism in comics. (I love Maria Bamford for this very reason.) Nothing to do with my own narcissism and enjoying hearing my own ideas and feelings presented in pleasant, pithy disguise, of course!

Then, I YouTubed his work and FELL IN LOVE with his voice. It's almost as if the ideas come before the laughs, but they run parallel to one another.

Basically, I'm a new Marc Maron fan. If you wanted to take one thing from this post, I guess that'd be it.

Listen to this week's Never Not Funny (it's free, cause of Christmas). He has a pretty long segment about the origins of his cat clan.

Just listened to it! He told the airport cat story on WTF, but the episode was GREAT!

Also, love your "Christmas Shoes" avatar.

As it stands, where does one submit a WTF story? I think I have one that'd fit the show quite nicely (but then, doesn't everybody?)

The podcast is my first introduction to Marc. After finally being driven crazy trying to remember where I'd heard the "Lock the Gates" shout from the start of each episode, I finally googled it.

Now I've gotta dig up a copy of Almost Famous.

Looks like there's a date booked at the Hudson Theatre (LA) on January 28 for a "Comedy Central WTF Pilot"!! (Maybe everything that rises must crash and burn and rise again.) I'd love to see him get the noteriety and publicity, but somehow I can't see what makes WTF so FF getting past the censors.

    Will success spoil Rock Maron?

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

PFT is right about NYC taking away your humanity. You have to get used to people not holding doors or saying excuse me or smiling or saying hello. I don't mean every single person on the street greeting you with a song and dance, just basic decency. There are too many people.

These are the kind of women that comedians attract:
"I love you. Oh you don't WANT my love? Fuck you! What if I cry, will you love me?"

Awesome. I actually wondered to myself once, "I wonder if that's from that part of Almost Famous." One of my favorite movies, but it's been a while.

New episode was excellent. Eddie Pepitone makes me laugh so much. Had never heard him before WTF (I'm pretty new to this whole comedy scene).

It's true. You start off living in New York saying excuse me and hello, until you don't get it back - so you go - fuck it, why bother? No one meets your gaze or smiles, so eventually - you don't look anyone in the eye. I've taken plenty of elbows and bags to the back and stomach without so much as a sorry, so why bother? Not that I'm excusing it -it's just such a crowded city that you can't say sorry to everyone who bumps into you - you'd be doing it all day long - so the behavior is perpetuated. Although there are some nice people everywhere, indifference rules every time.

I loved that podcast, and I totally agreed with PFT. I'm a New Yorker who has pretty much had enough this town, and want to follow the dapper one to LA like...tomorrow.

Moving from New York to L.A. because you don't like rude people is like switching from lemons to limes because you don't like sour food.

L.A. is just a different, but equally soul crushing kind of rude. The kind that will smile to your face while stabbing you in the back. It all depends on if you like someone to tell you they're going to sucker punch you in the face or pretend to be your best friend first.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

Episode #34 is up, featuring an interview with Dana DeArmond. I'm not big on porn "stars" but it was a pretty good interview.

Fair enough. Good point. But I'd rather have my soul crushed when the sun is shining and the wind chill factor isn't in the single digits for more than half the year.
