WTF with Marc Maron (podcast)

This and Never Not Funny are my podcasting lifeblood right now. The show just feels very raw and intimate a lot of the time. And very smart. I love it lots.

Listened to the Jen Kirkman episode and enjoyed it. It was interesting to hear her take on children after Marc and Jenenne had so recently talked about some of the same issues. I'm glad that all three of them are so open about not having kids. Society can be such an old grandmother in pressuring you about having children. I couldn't do it. I can't take having my partner have something else to lavish attention on. If I had kids I would just be intensely jealous of them all of the times I wasn't irritated by their invasion into my life. I want to go places and do things with my partner. I don't want to deal with raising kids. It's too much, and it's nice to hear people I respect feel some of the same ways about it.

I just started listening to this the other day expressly because Maria was on it and I'm slowly getting hooked. At first Marc's intensely confessional style was off-putting but I'm really starting to enjoy it more and more. CDR is still my favorite but this is really starting to grow on me more and more.

Jon Benjamin you're a marginal character in the world of comedy, not everybody says "holy shit Jon Benjamin" you have to go through a series of examples and then they go "oh that guy"

What truly makes the Marc Maron podcast unique is that he's been around longer than everyone and yet even a guy like Jon Benjamin having success (and anyone who loves comedy should be thrilled for any success he has because he has truly earned it by doing great work) still makes him envious in the way that somehow anyone realizing greater success than him knocks him down even further on the comedy ladder. It funny because it's truly genuine and Jon Benjamin's response to it was perfect - he was insulted but on the other hand as a comedian he has to grudgingly respect the honesty. Great stuff.

The story is:

Louis CK called Mar Maron and told him "I don't like it when you belittle my success, I've worked really hard at it".

To which Marc replied "You don't understand Louie... your success HURTS ME".
