Re: WTF with Marc Maron (podcast)

I think he came off better than Mencia as well, but then, he had time to listen to Mencia, and then gauge the reactions of how that interview went, and maybe try to figure out a way to handle it better. On the other hand, Marc did some more antagonistic, for whatever reason.

For me, the interview did not really make me feel dislike for him, but I felt like he tries very hard to manufacture an a certain image of himself.

I wonder how much of an underground backlash there was against Steve Martin at the height of his arena sell out days. It's not all published on the internet forever, but I have to assume it was there. Also, Dane's act is closer to Steve Martin's than (the majority of) other comics.

Also, I'd bet more than one comic had thought of the premise of naming your kid something ridiculous before even Steve Martin did it and since. And by more than one, I'd say dozens, at least. There just happens to be 3 of those comics that are famous.

Great episode/interview. I think that mostly Dane is just guilty of not being that funny after his first album.

I remember this bit, SB. I believe he did it at a Comics Come Home. I think this is when I first saw him, and I also really enjoyed it.

I know Dane has been roundly mocked on shows like Scrubs and Family Guy, and not just in a random way. It's all about his fan base and his comedy ("He's on the Internet and I'm in college!" and "Why am I funny?") and I am wondering what he thinks of that.

Just finished listening to the Tig Notaro ep, and it was probably one of the best I've listened to yet. It was interesting to hear Tig open up on things and get some insight on what really makes her tick. Definitely made me a fan of hers just a bit more.

Yeah, and he seemed to be using that as cover. Maybe I'm over-analyzing, but he hit that daddy stuff pretty hard. As if to say: "After I defend myself, if you still think I'm an asshole, blame my dad."

I actually felt more sympathy for Mencia than Cook: I pitied the man for his delusions. Whereas, with Cook, all I could picture was Charles Foster Kane, the ambition-consumed, rage-filled control freak with the need to be loved on his own terms.

But I did always love that Kool-Aid Man bit...

Wait, Family Guy criticized Dane Cook? Why wasn't I informed about the black hole that it created?

    No he's super dreamy.

As a dumb 19 year old girl what makes me laugh is absolutely anything a cute, confident guy says.

The most contact I had to have with Dane Cook fans and Family Guy fans were with frat or frat-like guys, so that's how they will always be to me.

Thanks for sharing your opinions re: my question about the naming your kid weird things/Steve Martin/DC thing.

I think I agree with what you guys said here. Seems like he found out later about it in research and it wasn't a lift.

I've had parallel thought so many times it's terrible and I don't think he's a thief. I was just fixated on the logic of that actual sentence I heard him say on the podcast.

I have also hated the way I have come off on many podcasts and I have received hate comments/emails on most appearances from some people out there in the world so I don't intend to bash him. But I will say that appearances I've done on shows has been me being so comfortable and forgetting I'm being recorded and talking to people that know me really well that I say things that I'm not really that passionate about -it comes off that I'm way more passionate than I am and I sound like a dick or like I'm trying to be a certain way.

However, the opposite of that is being so controlled about your image as someone who is "going to be totally revealing" that you actually think you have convinced the interviewer that they are having an honest and organic experience with you when really it's not and it's almost an insult to the interviewer's intelligence to walk away thinking you affected them at all. That's the kind of icky feeling this particular episode gave me. Whereas with Mencia, I feel like he knew MM wasn't buying it but it's all he had to sell anyway and he hoped for the best.

This is not to take anything away from your very funny stand up (and awesomely ridiculous twitterfeed), but I am most excited to hear you on podcasts - you're so funny in conversation.

Re: WTF with Marc Maron (podcast)

    A. My first impression was I was surprised how funny he was. I dunno if it's because I wrote off Dane Cook after his second CD and even more so his first HBO special was just him stomping around the stage just going "I'M DANE COOK! HERE'S ME DOING DANE COOK STUFF!", but I have to say he comes off as a genuinely funny guy, even compared to many of the other people I fuckin love who've talked to Marc

    B. Still kinda on the fence about the joke stealing stuff. His stuff definitely isn't nearly as word-by-word theft as Mencia, who's in a class all his own. And there's clearly something to the "independent... BUT here's my problem: A couple jokes that are vaguely similar to jokes of a couple different comedians is one thing. What always got me was "Here's 3 jokes from one Louis CK CD which are basically identical (if just in basic concept) to 3 bit from one Dane Cook CD two years later". Maybe coincidence, but to put it bluntly that's a BIG coincidence.

    C. I think most comedians resent Dane in the way that other female tennis players might've resented the "Anna Kournikova" phenomenon. I think they mean it as a critisism of the culture, but can allow themselves to go to far blaming Dane when really anybody would at least accept it and probably play into it.

    D. Lastly Dane reminds me a lot of the way sports writer Bill Simmons described Wilt Chamberlain. That he was a very very talented player but obsessed with statistics as a means to prove how great he was, even if it didn't help his team. Alway trying hardest to rack up points and rebounds, never as preoccupied with necesarily helping his team win. Even when he figured out that he should be a better "teammate" the only way he could figure it was to obsess over assists; passing constantly even if it made more sense to shoot.

Dane seems the same way. The only way he can figure to show how great of a comedian he is manifest in numbers: How many CDs, how many specials, recycling material ever year, performing for 8 hours etc etc. Stuff that other comedians seem to do to further explore their comedy and imaginations he seems to do for the most part to say he could.

    E. Ugh. that's a lot. Anyway terribly enjoyable episode. And I think the "Nicotine Diary" will get lost in the kerfuffle but I found it fascinating. That should be the entire 'anti-tobacco' section of every DARE class in the nation.

Come on, guys! There is seriously nothing else you need to know about Gallagher. Unless you want to hear Gallagher call Marc a homosexual for his taste in clothes. OK, I'm warming to the idea.

Re: WTF with Marc Maron (podcast)

Marc, I was wondering if you ever feel the need to discuss someone's agenda for coming on the show in the same way that you delve into their psychological background? With the Dane interview I thought the two were completely intertwined.

It seems to me that a large amount of cognitive dissonance is fueling both Dane and Carlos. Dane clearly has a need for attention and approval, and within the alternative comedy world (and elsewhere) he is completely despised (and for good reason I think). As a result of this need, it seemed to me that he had to fashion a narrative where he was always an outcast among the alternative scene because he didn't hang out, was scared of them, etc. that would explain away why people dislike him. I get the sense that most people view him as a great promotions man, but an entirely average comedian who made his career by reaching out to an untapped audience that was ignorant of comedy. Chris Rock, Steve Martin and the other comedians he compared himself to got to where they are because of their comedic talents, not their ability to harness social marketing tools. As a result, he will never get the respect he thinks he deserves, because he never earned it in the first place.
