Hey, I searched for a thread for this and didn't find one. Apologies if it's a duplicate.
I just listened to #4. there's a conversation there regarding alternative comedy and content.
Please go listen. But here's the part I wanted to talk about.
Greg and Dave talk about the state of alternative comedy. They say that at one time it was about an alternative content, but now the main scene has absorbed the content, or that there is normal content on the alternative scene.
What they don't mention that interested me was they don't bring up the lack of stage time in the clubs. To me, the alternative scene is the way a new comic gets on stage. Nothing to do with the content. As far as the SF Bay Area goes, there's no way to develop without hitting the alternative scene. There's hardly any stage time at the two main clubs.
At the Punchline, there's one booked showcase. Nothing like this at Cobb's. The booked showcase is something you're lucky to get on once in your first year, then a few times your next year. Not nearly enough time to develop.
Now, I wasn't an "insider" of any kind when the previous generation of comics were starting out, although I was a fan. But from the way they talk around here, it was a lot easier to get on a stage at a real club when they were starting out. That's how it sounds to me. That may not be right.
But it's an idea, an opinion, that alternative comedy has gone from a way to express alternative content to a way to get the stage time necessary to develop as a comic.

Can I just say... Is the Orange Hobo Family is moving - lock up that toy car! Otherwise its goin with them! Coz.. you know.. no one is using it.
Also I love Tim Tams more than I can explain. And sweaters. This must make me a cuddlah.
I hate confrontation so much, and every time I hear about the Orange Hoboes I wonder how nobody has cold cocked the dad and locked him in a dumpster yet.

I can't believe how funny I think this podcast is.
I wish it were longer. I giggle everytime I hear the word "cricket." I snicker whenever I see that Greg and Dave are guests on some poor fool's podcast -- the host can't possibly have known what was going to happen. I want to use the picture of Dave in the ill-fitting clown suit as an Avatar, and/or make earrings of it.
