    Re: Vancouver Comedy Fest lineup

Daft question here, but I am keen on applying to the comedy festivals for a spot (can't toil in obscurity forever). My biggest hindrance is cost though. Plane ticket from Pakistan to anywhere right now costs the GDP of Uganda. If selected, do the festivals cover costs or is that out of your own pocket. Do they accept unsolicited submissions and more importantly does a comic who doesn't have an agent have a chance?

Thanks in advance to anyone who actually answers these questions!

    Re: Vancouver Comedy Fest lineup

The Montreal Comedy Festival (aka Just For Laughs) looks at EVERY single submission they receive. They pride themselves on gathering talent from all over the world. They are also notorious for being cheap assholes who undercut comedians.

That's all I know. They receive a crap load of tapes every year so make sure you have something special. (niche and funny)

Should this be moved to the empty and faraway 'CANADA' section of the website? I say 'yea'!
Also, I can't go to this because it's on the other side of my huge country. But if I did go, and if I did get to do standup somewhere in BC again, I would skip the pig farmer jokes this time I.

Man, I wish I lived in Vancouver.

Why can't any of these amazing people come to Winnipeg for OUR comedy fest?! I even know the people who put it on! I mean sure, we get the Rakoffs and Mochries and Cullens and Flahertys, but where's the sketch and improv geniuses?

    Come to Winnipeg, UCB!

    Canada doesn't fucking deserve this.

    Re: Vancouver Comedy Fest lineup

The comedy fest was fucking great this year. I went to three shows, three days in a row.

Thursday's Comedy Death Ray was an epic, four-hour-long show.

TIM & ERIC came out in gold, full-body spandex and did a several minute song consisting only of the word "diarrhea," complete with a whole dance number and accompanying video that had nothing to do with anything. Then they showed a short commercial for plastic pant-liners that catch your liquidy messes.

JANEANE GAROFALO went political (as usual), but was very enjoyable.

ANDY RICHTER had his "stand-up debut" and did a long line of jokes everyone can relate to. Like how annoying Val Kilmer is when you go to his house to just buy coke.

BRIAN POSEHN rocked with his classic bits almost as much as he loves metal. Which is quite a bit.

MATT BESSER did an awesome pseudo-parody of Josh Blue. He did his set as a deaf, blind, armless comedian (and winner of Last Comic Standing). Joke-after-joke-after-joke.

ANDY KINDLER brought his usual energy and amazing meta-comedy-commentary.

HOWARD KREMER killed with his song titles and everything else.

REGGIE WATTS blew everyone away with his sampler, beat boxing, singing, and voices. (With an awesome slow transition into a spot-on Cosby impression.)

TODD GLASS confused people when he came out singing poorly. Then delivered a great set, busting on theatre blackouts, only to proceed to getting the house to give him hilarious blackouts.

HARD N PHIRM rocked the house last with their usual commitment and nerdosity.

TIG NOTARO gave the mic stand to a completely uncooperative woman in the audience, and then slayed.

GRAHAM CLARK did his A-material along with several jokes I haven't heard before. A top-tier set that opened the show.

THE FUN BUNCH, Scott and BJ, were great hosts as usual. And now I unfortunately can not un-see the image of them kissing in their underwear.

I then hit up one of the ASSSSCAT! shows on Friday night. Matt Walsh and Matt Besser opened by asking the (apparently deviant) audience about their affairs and threesomes. The whole troupe did fantastic, with everyone pulling their weight and delivering great tags, physical comedy, and edits. Janeane Garofalo did the monologues, relaying the hilarious stories about how she herniated a disc in her back on the set of Big Trouble... and then did it again by sneezing... and again by laughing at Will Arnet. Brian Posehn, Mike Phirman, and local comedian AJ McKenzie watched the show from the VIP section on the side.

Finally, Saturday night I attended the Match Game show. I'm a huge Jimmy Pardo fan, and he brought his usual hosting A-Game. The panel was hilarious. Reggie Watts and Mike Phirman also enjoyed the show from the audience. At one point, someone in the crowd tried to bust on Scott for having so many beers. Eventually, Scott and Janeane started giving out a few to the crowd. I was able to get one from Janeane from my spot in the far corner of the front row.

All-in-all is was a hilarious 3 days. My only regret is that I had work/school/to pay bills, so I couldn't go to every show. I really wanted to see how Todd Glass's ridiculously intimate evening turned out. Anyone go to that??

Graham needs to get more exposure outside of Canada. He's a good time.

He really is very skilled. Even the jokes I'd heard him do before, he had at least two more great tags on each of 'em.

Everyone with half a talent needs more exposure, really. Inside or outside of Canada.

For anyone who doesn't know, Graham co-hosts a weekly podcast with me called Stop Podcasting Yourself. We have Vancouver comedians on as guests, and the occasional out-of-towner. We had Reggie Watts last week.

Search for it in iTunes, or go to http://stoppodcastingyourself.blogspot.com

    Re: Vancouver Comedy Fest lineup

Graham Clark has the distinction of producing one of the only "Comedy Now!"* specials that I've actually laughed at.

*For any Americans unfamiliar with the Comedy Network's "Comedy Now!", take the poor editing of a CCP, times it by a hundred and then sweeten every single pause and/or setup with really bad canned laughter. That's a Comedy Now.
