    Tropic Thunder

I saw a screening of this last night and I thought it was very good. Ben Stiller has always been at his best when he's satirizing the entertainment industry and making parodies of movies, as he did often on his sketch show and whenever he would host the MTV Movie Awards. There's a lot of that showbiz satire in this movie, and it's all done very well.
The first 10 or 15 minutes of this movie are brilliant, and probably the most fun I've had watching a comedy since "The Ten". Unfortunately, this opening part of the movie is so funny that after it's over, the rest of the movie can't help but suffer a little bit in comparison, but there's still lots of funny stuff throughout the rest of the film.

Downey is consistently hilarious, and Jack Black and Jay Baruchel each contribute some funny scenes. Danny McBride's role is pretty small in this, and Steve Coogan's is even smaller. Matthew McConaghey actually manages to not be annoying in his role as Stiller's agent (a role that was originally going to be played by Owen Wilson). There's also a surprise bit of casting in here that I won't reveal, and hopefully critics won't either, because it should remain a surprise.

The best thing about the movie is that the DVD will be great, because there's lots of things in the movie that are just briefly touched on (like Tugg Speedman's "Simple Jack" film) which can probably be explored further on the DVD.

If it's who I think you're talking about, then tons of people already know about this.

I'm really anticipating seeing this, it looks like a lot of fun.

Yeah, I know I'm looking at reviews online, and several critics just blatantly go ahead and mention it in their reviews. It makes me nostalgic for that era where everything about movies wasn't spoiled before they came out, and you could watch a movie and genuinely be surprised.

The picture they have of Stiller as Simple Jack is amazing, looks nothing like him.

RETARD GROUPS GETTING IN A RETARDED HUFF ABOUT TROPIC THUNDER'S RETARD JOKES
When I was a younger man I did a couple of summers at camps for retarded children and adults (as a counselor, not as a camper. For the record). The camps were filled with campers of varying levels of ability; the man in my charge at adult camp was completely non-verbal, used to shit his pants on the regular* and had been abused viciously at Willowbrook State School. Other campers were very high functioning and capable of mostly independent living. On the first day of adult camp one summer, all the campers came to the upstate New York site on a bus together; as they unloaded we each took charge of our camper. One of the higher functioning campers got off the bus and asked his counselor 'Is it just me, or are these guys all retarded?' 'It's just you,' his counselor replied.

I learned two things those two summers: I don't like washing feces off adults and that you have to have a sense of humor in that environment. Somebody needs to tell that to Timothy P. Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, who is calling for a boycott of this week's release Tropic Thunder. Why? Because in the film Ben Stiller's action movie actor character attempts to go for Oscar gold with a Forrest Gump-esque movie called Simple Jack; Robert Downey Jr's Kirk Lazarus, serious Method actor extreme, explains to him where he went wrong with the role: 'Never go full retard,' he says.

It's funny because it's true, and anyone watching the film would realize that Stiller and screenwriters Justin Theroux and Etan Coen are poking fun not at retarded people but at the way that Hollywood, and specifically Oscar-hungry actors, condescendingly approach the retarded (a word I'm not even supposed to be using here. It's too mean spirited). The joke is not on the disabled but on the industry and the actors; normally I would assume that the people making this stink haven't seen the film, but one member of the boycott group Shriver has put together, David C. Tolleson of the National Down Syndrome Congress, has seen the movie and said, “I came out feeling like I had been assaulted." Now that's retarded.

This looks to be a real boycott brewing, as serious groups like the Arc of the United States (with whom I've worked), the National Down Syndrome Congress, the American Association of People With Disabilities and others are getting ready to protest theaters showing the movie. I know that this is 'wrong,' but tell me that if you went to a screening of Tropic Thunder and saw a bunch of retarded people picketing outside you wouldn't chuckle just a little bit.

And it's getting worse. Shriver is doing the totally retarded thing of asking members of Congress to denounce the film as 'hate speech.' We're already a nation on the verge of regulating thought with hate speech laws - are we about to become one that censors movies and art because people get their feelings hurt by it?

Words don't hurt people. That's a lesson no one seems to learn. Intent hurts people. There are plenty of racists out there today, and they just don't use words like 'nigger' anymore. By focusing on the bugbear of language we've allowed these people to hide themselves in plain view, so that they can get people worked up about Obama by focusing on his 'otherness' as opposed to his blackness. These butthurt fucktards have created a world where the real bad guys, the real haters, have learned to speak in codes on Fox News so that they can say things that are just like what they were saying back in the days of Brown v Board of Education, but more politely.

Thankfully the movie isn't being changed, but some of the advertising has been. The viral Simple Jack website (which had a blurb from Dark Horizons on it!) has been disappeared. I urge you to go see Tropic Thunder this week not only because it's funny but also to show that you understand humor, and that you understand that words are not the same as actions. Give one of those picketing retards a piece of candy on the way out, too.

*and would punch me in the head when I tried to shower him off.

Really? You don't think that picture looks just like Ben Stiller with whiter teeth and blond hair?

    Re: Tropic Thunder

Its probably his expression and the way it looks like it was shot during "The Yearling". You can certainly see him in there, it just takes a second for Stiller to emerge.

    Re: Tropic Thunder

Mr. Paul F. Tompkins was the host of Comedy Central's Reel Comedy about Tropic Thunder. He made it an enjoyable half hour, particularly him and Jack Black together. And I was a little scared for Paul having to interview Nick Nolte.

"White boys always get the Oscar. It's a known fact. Did I ever get a nomination? No! You know why? Cause I hadn't played any of them slave roles, and get my ass whipped. That's how you get the nomination. A black dude who plays a slave that gets his ass whipped gets the nomination, a white guy who plays an idiot gets the Oscar. That's what I need, I need to play a retarded slave, then I'll get the Oscar. "

I've seen the movie, and only a retard (sorry) could miss the satirical point of the "Simple Jack" scenes. The joke is never about the mentally handicapped; it is always about Stiller's character and making him look foolish. When the trailer is first shown in the movie, "Simple Jack" is described by a reporter as "one of the worst films ever made", and throughout the movie it's a running joke, what a disaster it was.

If anything, the joke is about what a bad actor Speedman is in his attempt to play a retarded character. And the monologue by Downey about all the different actors who have portrayed mentally challenged characters is a brilliant piece of writing and very true. I personally find a movie like "I Am Sam" much more offensive to people who are actually retarded than anything that can be found in this movie.

I haven't seen this yet, but I will this week. Best Buy has Team America World Police for $6.99, with a free ticket for Tropic Thunder. Worth checking out.

    Nope.

STATEMENT FROM DREAMWORKS STUDIOS REGARDING ‘TROPIC THUNDER’ AND THE STUDIO’S ONGOING DISCUSSIONS WITH DISABILITY ADVOCACY GROUPS
“’Tropic Thunder’ is an R-rated comedy that satirizes Hollywood and its excesses, and makes its point by featuring inappropriate and over-the top characters in ridiculous situations. The film is in no way meant to disparage or harm the image of individuals with disabilities.”

“We have had productive discussions with representatives of disability advocacy organizations and look forward to working with them closely in the future. However no changes or cuts to the film will be made.”

Did you hear that rumor from the Retard Convention? I thought that wasn't being held until February 31st?

I heard, I think it was in a chat room somewhere, that PETA was objecting to the upcoming re-release of Jaws, and so Universal will be removing the shark entirely.

I also heard that if they're going to remove the Simple Jack parts, they'll simply cut the $90 million movie down to a short, since the second half of the movie would make no sense at all without any reference to Simple Jack. Apparently there was already a test version leaked to Youtube.

Am I the only retard who hasn't seen the movie who started laughing as soon as i heard what was supposed to be so offensive? I laughed at the "Simple Jack" premise, and I'm taking a guess here, but isn't it supposed to be a comment about actors playing retarded people in movies?
    Estoy jodida...

FIRST thing I thought of when I saw the "controversy" over Tropic Thunder.

I just watched Bowfinger again last week. Still funny! Makes me want to see Eddie Murphy make another good movie.

In order to be truly sensitive you've got to make sure your humor is easily understood by the group who may be offended. For example it is offensive mention the deaf in a joke that relies on tone-of-voice.
