The Sound of Young America: Chris Parnell

This is the official home of posts about, comments upon, and links to The Sound of Young America, a public radio show about things that are awesome.

Me and sometimes collaborators have been doing interviews and goofing around on the radio for eight years now. We try to embody the best of public radio (intelligence, depth, etc) without sacrificing fun.

You can find all of our shows for the past four years or so, plus many from before that (all free) on our website at maximumfun.org.

You can find us in iTunes by clicking here.

You can find the regularly updated blog here.

Many AST favorites have been guests on the show in the past, in some cases multiple times.

    Patton Oswalt

    Chris Hardwick

    Tim & Eric

Matt Besser & folks from the UCB Theater

    Bob Odenkirk

Live in New York - The Performances

Last month we recorded a show live at the UCB Theater in New York as part of Sketchfest NYC. It'll end up being three podcasts, but I've just released the first.

TSOYA Live in NYC 2008: The Performances.

Features comedy from Michael Showalter and Pangea 3000, plus music from Dawn Landes, in both video and audio forms. Plus some special downloads not available on the podcast.

Why does congolia have a picture of you as his avatar and I didn't know you were related to Bill Murray? Discuss.

I'm crazy for TSOYA and the entire Murray clan. I found a way to combine this.

Re: The Sound of Young America: Awesome Public Radio

I just started listening to the show last night. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to inform me of these things. I love the show. So far so good. I downloaded all of the podcasts available on itunes. I hope to use them to get me through my commute to and from work. Thanks for the greatness.

    Thanks Sean!

If you want to download older eps in iTunes, use this link.. iTunes only allows for 99 episodes for a given show, so I started a second feed to highlight older material.

Jesse, why did you break this poor woman's heart? At least you got what you deserved.

He actually talks about that article in this episode of Jordan, Jesse GO!

This is my first post on AST, but as I was exploring the forums I came across this great little TSOYA thread and wanted to throw another log on the fire.

TSOYA is one of my favorite podcasts, Jesse never ceases to amaze with solid guest after solid guest.

Jesse's in the New York Times Magazine

Today's Consumed column in the NYT Magazine covers the Zune and so naturally features Jesse (and Jordan) and his affinity for Microsoft's MP3 player:

"But the most salient feature of the Zune seems to be that it’s not an iPod. Jesse Thorn, host of the public-radio show (and popular podcast) “The Sound of Young America,” is a Zune proponent, praising, for instance, its ability to sync wirelessly with a computer. Plus he was able to update his first-generation Zune with the improved software and firmware designed for the newer version — in contrast to Apple’s charging iPod Touch owners for upgrades, he makes a point of saying. Turns out Thorn has always resisted buying an iPod, having been put off initially by the price and later by the ever-growing number of “self-satisfied people carrying a ubiquitous object.” That sounds hostile, but Thorn is actually quite good-humored. On “Jordan Jesse Go,” another (less formal) podcast he co-hosts, he and his friend Jordan Morris regularly joke about the song-swap feature, inventing the term “rocket up your Zunehole” to describe the practice. Thorn also seems to take pleasure in examples of product-design oddities, like the inclusion of brown among the device’s first-generation color choices."

    Read the whole thing here.

It is kind of bittersweet to be featured in Gawker without any link, attribution, or mention of your name... oh well.

Re: The Sound of Young America: Awesome Public Radio

I heard you're officially off the market. The weeping of public radio listeners--gay and female--created a river of tears that flooded the lobby of my apartment building.

    (Congratulations!)
