So Zach is in trouble for saying nothing...

I shouldn't care. But seeing the comments at the bottom of this page bothers me. Let's boycott Zach! That's rational.

I'm not going to boycott Zach, but I am a little surprised he had the clout to stop the cameo from happening. Maybe others agreed with him and Todd Phillips figured it was more trouble than it was worth. Still, that would have brought a lot of publicity to the movie, so it's odd that "morality" got in the way of them making money off of his appearance.

Not that I really like Mel Gibson or anything, but Mike Tyson has had as many domestic violence issues as Mel, AND he bit a guy's ear off once, and people didn't have a problem with him being in the first movie.

Tyson had "as many"? I would say Tyson has had a LOT more. He raped a girl, went to jail for 3 years for it, and of course, bit an ear off in a boxing match. Mel Gibson yelled at his ex-wife, and on another note, shouted some racial slurs. Sure, both have done bad things, and I don't agree with any of them, but if I had to size it up, I rather get yelled at from a drunk guy, than get raped or have my ear bitten off.

Oh, and I'm not boycotting Zach or anything, I'm just giving my opinion. I just find it bizarre.....

I wasn't being serious about the boycott by the way. That's crazy. Just seems odd to me that people are already looking forward to a Mel Gibson comeback. But to vilify Zach for this decision, when I'm sure many people on the set opposed it, is very wrong. I think you are right though BillBrasky saying this going to be more trouble than it was worth. And how shocking would this cameo be if the movie doesn't come out for another year?

We don't really know what the facts are, it may have been more than just Zach who had objections. I can understand him not wanting the movie to be a vehicle for Gibson to regain so goodwill or start his "comeback". The Gibson cameo would have been much bigger than the Tyson one. Press leading up to the movie would likely have been all about Mel and what he's been through etc. I can understand objections on those grounds.

    But again, we don't know.

The actual statement from the actual people involved actually points out that the entire cast and crew were against this -- it's not one actor objecting and getting someone fired as a result:

Todd Phillips: "I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."

"Ostensibly on Comedy Death Ray to promote his new movie with Robert Downey Jr., Due Date, Galifianakis explains to interviewer Scott Aukerman that although he was excited by the success of The Hangover, he's not into a lot of the showbiz scene."

^Wouldn't it be great if reporters would do at least a TINY bit of research to learn that Zach and Scott are good friends and frequent collaborators. It's not as though he's making the podcast circuit with his interviews. He was just on a friend's show.

None of the information in that quote is incorrect. You're not mad at their lack of journalistic integrity, you're mad that they don't know what Comedy Death Ray is.

The thing with Gibson, as opposed to Tyson's behavior, is that he offended an entire race and religion.

After his drunken tirade where it revealed he was an anti-Semite, I pledged to never see another one of his films.

Mike Tyson may be deranged, but he isn't a racist who thinks Jews should be forever held accountable for making Jesus so great. I think that's what people really don't like about Mel Gib.

Re: So Zach is in trouble for saying nothing...

It's a tricky situation, and a lot of the blame seems to be falling at Zach's feet.

If we are to take it that Zach was the only person against having Gibson in the movie (I strongly doubt that). What does stand is that Zach is probably one of the few (if not only person) in the anti Mel camp who has any clout to do do anything about it. And it was clout he did not have going into the first hangover wherein he was in no position to say "I don't wan't Tyson in this movie" (If indeed he wanted to say that)

Theres a lot to think about here, Gibson is a racist, but Tyson is a rapist, and though these may rhyme, I think one is a lot worse than the other.

I seem to be missing something here. Who is Zach in trouble with exactly?

Can this be turned into the official thread for upcoming comedy masterpiece The Beaver?

Re: So Zach is in trouble for saying nothing...

Keep in mind the context of the Tyson appearance vs. the Gibson appearance.

Mike Tyson appeared the same year he had a revelatory documentary about him made and he was publicly trying to make amends, and hasn't had a violent incident in years. This was the public persona of him at the time of the film's release.

Mel was cast in this movie specifically because of his outbursts and bad publicity. That's what makes it an eyebrow raiser. If he didn't have this controversy, this cameo would actually be pretty funny, but it also would not have happened. There are several separate incidents of Gibson having tirades against minorities and women. Should he never work again and be barred from appearing in films as a result? No, of course not. But it is morally reprehensible to cast him in a film specifically for the shock value inherent in these incidents, and that was absolutely why he was cast.
