Congratulations to Vanessa Bayer, that was the best imitation of Diane Keaton I've ever seen anyone attempt (People who I've seen attempt one = 0). Kate's Jodie Foster and Ellen DeGeneres were pretty good too (her horrified face as Jodie has to kiss a man was pretty hilarious).
This season has been quite refreshing. As trite as it is to say this, Kristen Wiig leaving has solved like 80 percent of the show's problems. These first 3 episodes have been almost entirely annoying recurring character-free. The only 2 bad recurring characters to show up, unsurprisingly, have come from Fred (Roger Brush and the Best Friends of Whichever Dictator). They did do the Four Singing Guys but they hadn't done that in a while so I can excuse that. It may have been the last ever one too, with Jason leaving pretty soon. This episode there was nothing that would count as a recurring bit at all.
More promising than that, though, there seems to be more of an emphasis on original premises and experimentation this season, with things like the drill sergeant sketch and the puppet sketch with Seth MacFarlane and the construction worker sketch in this episode. Stepping away from pop culture satire and talk show sketches to do more timeless bits of sketch comedy.
Combine that with a rare host-driven monologue and a host who was eager to journey outside his comfort zone with various different roles and accents and you had a pretty good show.
that construction worker sketch reminded me of one of my favorite SNL sketches from my childhood. Ray Romano as the new Sportscenter announcer who compared Karl Malone's rebounding ability to a donkey eating waffles.
Agree with Brasky that there seems to be an emphasis on pushing the boundaries of a sketch rather than just pounding the premise into the ground while spreading the ball around the cast. Also agree on the Diane Keaton impression. It was great.
That sketch with Bobby Moynihan also was the most UCB-ish sketch they've done on the show in a while. It really felt like something he might have improv-ed on stage that they turned into a sketch. We haven't seen something that ridiculous from Bobby on SNL since the "It smells like peppah up in here" guy his first season. It came really close to the kind of stuff he does whenever he's on Comedy Bang Bang, like Fourvel.
As much as people seem to now hate Fred Armison on the show, and as stupid as the girlfriend-sketch eventually was, his and Daniel Craigs ridiculous faces had me in hysterics the whole time. I like laughing, so sue me.
Who hates Fred?? Jerks?
I don't hate Fred, but I just don't understand why he's still on the show. He has Portlandia which gives him the outlet to do whatever he wants creatively. He no longer is doing Obama, so he doesn't have that to do anymore. The show is in a transition year and the emphasis is shifting to a mostly all new cast, and he is the only cast member who's attempting to drag the show back to where it was 2 or 3 seasons ago.
It's OK, Brasko.
After watching Weekend Update, all I can say is that Big Bird needs to work on his timing. You'd think after being on Sesame Street for 300 years he would have it nailed by now...Maybe he just needs more witty banter with Oscar the Grouch...?

I hate Fred. I'm also a jerk, so it's all good.
I feel like Big Bird's puppeteer and voice-person were not in contact at all and had no rehearsal.
(Weinerslave - a/s/l? pic?)
Big Bird is normally voiced and puppeteered by the same person (Caroll Spinney). But I guess when it's live, they might split up the duties so that Spinney can have a microphone that's not inside a giant bird suit.

What giant bird suit?
(Weinerslave, I asked for a PIC!)
I actually don't know how to upload photos to this site, so just go here:

I thought it was funny how much Big Bird, a giant puppet, wanted to make eye contact with Seth.
