That was a stellar episode. I loved the Obama/Cosby sketch (especially when Rudy/Joe took the fall for the sandwich), the weekend update was fantastic (Don't tell me what to do!), and the level of comfort and fucking around by Maya and the others was wildly refreshing. That Brad Pitt impression was weird.

"Sister Maya, was this an act of malice?"
"No, Brother West, it was an act of whimsy!"

Loved this sketch. Also Joe Jamal Biden. It was weird to see WUWT air after WU.

Also, Jay Pharoah's pilot for the new NBC multicam laffer "Them's the Breaks," coming to an unemployment office near you in 2013.

Bon Iver putting himself to sleep is Mike Phirman's Irony and Wine song.

Is that the guy's name? Or the band's name? Bon Iver. Bone Ee-veaaar.

He did it before and I still don't get it, the vocal tics he does for it make absolutely no sense.

Everybody always says this, and I don't know why. I am 100% on board with Taran's Brad Pitt impression. Yes, you could go for a technically accurate impression like Jay Pharoah does, but that is often boring if there's nothing more to it than that. Taran tries to have fun with his impressions, like Dana Carvey used to do with his George Bush- abstracting the impression and turning it into a fun character. His Ashton Kutcher is basically the yelling Ashton from "That 70's Show" and not even close to what Ashton is like now, but it's still funny. When he did Piers Morgan last week, he threw in some stuttering, "Wha-wha-wha"s in there that made the impression funnier, to me anyway. Likewise, this Brad Pitt that he does seems like it is kind of a goofy caricature of "comedy" Brad Pitt, like Pitt when he is looser and more in a comedy mode like in Ocean's Eleven or Fight Club. In the "Tinyballs" short film from the Ben Stiller episode, he was actually trying to do a more accurate Brad Pitt and sounded almost exactly like him. His mannerisms are very close to the real Pitt too, the way he moves his hands and rubs his chin and stuff.

That's a pretty good break-down, Bill, but in the end, when it just comes down to "is it funny or not?", a lot of us are more confused than amused.

But in the long run it doesn't matter, because I like most of Taran's other stuff, and I think he's proven multiple times now that he's the breath of fresh air the show has needed at this point.

This one was sooooo good. "I Know Why The Caged Bird Laughs" -- wow. Funniest SNL sketch since "Potato Chip" (Host: Blake Lively, 2009).

Just overall an incredibly strong SNL in any year of the show. This is vying for best of the season with the Jimmy Fallon episode. Just shows they really can't go wrong with a former cast member coming back to host.

A shame (and predictable) that Sleigh Bells was done in by the notoriously horrible sound mix. Otherwise, a top notch episode.

Yeah, I actually thought they were pretty good, but they struck me as a band that probably sounds a lot better on CD than live (similar to Arcade Fire).

    Gotta agree with BillBrasky.
First time I saw Taran do Brad Pitt on "Update" I could not stop laughing at all the "dwuh"s, especially when he switches up the noise.
When I see Taran's impression I think of Brad in "Burn After Reading" for some reason which makes it work for me.
I tend to like the more comical impressions more than the more realistic and accurate.

Blasphemy. Arcade Fire did the 1st, 2nd and 4th best live shows I've seen.

I harped on here a year ago that the writers and Armisen needed to give Obama a personality, and last night for the first time they did it. I'd kinda like to see them play Obama-as-Cosby for the rest of the election cycle.

I, too, thought it was the best episode I've seen in 2 or 3 years.

And, just chiming in, I'm on board with Taran's Brad Pitt impression.

    Near-perfect episode. A+

The Obama Cosby thing was great and on more levels than most people will ever give it credit for. Wiig breaking, whats up wit dat? the "was this an act of malice?" line... so good. That episode is why we sit through the bad ones and still keep on watching, you know? Every once in awhile this show is so good it sort of makes you excited to be there watching it in that moment on TOP of it being funny -- it's a weird mixture of feelings that you don't really find anywhere else on television.

They tried to make it work with a wall of 20,000 amps but it still couldn't capture the loudness of the albums.

I take back what I said about not finding that weird mixture of excitement and funny anywhere else on television now that supersnooper/superfuzz just showed up on a television in Eastbound and Down.

I'll gladly give it a ton of credit and say out loud that playing Obama as a non-threatening middle-class black guy, especially if put in context of a world full of idiots who think his birth certificate is invalid and who think he's a foreign-born Taliban terrorist .......well, as satire, that choice is pretty special.

I told my husband that I wish that the Obama Show was a real thing. I'd watch that every week.
The Jay-Z/Beyonce/everyone else sketch was amazing. You're scaring Prince.
