Thread: Rolling Stone - 'The New Golden Age of Comedy' Issue

Rolling Stone - 'The New Golden Age of Comedy' Issue

The September 18th issue of Rolling Stone has a huge spread on comedy, including little blurbs from David Cross and Zach Galifianakis, and a bunch of others.

It's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy a magazine making you exclaim things like, "Holy Lord, comics I'm not particularly fond of such as Robin Williams and Jimmy Fallon love British shows I'm unhealthily fond of, such as The Mighty Boosh and The Day Today respectively!"

Also, I thought this was very well done, but shows Rolling Stone as dated and comes up short in a really big way: not even a mention of Adult Swim, which is strange, as the main article tends to focus on the awkward aspect of modern popular comedy, which Adult Swim and specifically Tim & Eric I feel are the kings of.

I'm definitely picking this up tomorrow. Sounds like it's worth a read.

RS always tries so hard, and they always *almost* get it right. I'll pick it up regardless... the Letterman interview looks amazing.

I don't know if it was ever mentioned here, but that Esquire comedy issue from last month was pretty awesome, particularly that spread about Largo. That seems to be way better than what this looks to be.

I mean, "New Golden Age of Comedy" yet two of the guys on the cover have been in the limelight for ages.

GQ, you mean. Not Esquire. (Though I can see how one could mix them up.)

Definitely some good stuff in there...although they do sell a certain town in the Pacific Northwest rather short--the amusing truth is that there will probably be a bunch of panty-twisted Emerald City types who will write in to vociferously complain about that...thus, ironically, sort of proving their point.

agreed on this. Seth Rogen on the cover if you're looking for it.

I thought everything past the initial feature article about the state of comedy was worth reading.

But the guy that wrote the feature story name drops Jared Hess early in the piece, and I have "feelings" about that. Not to discount Napolean Dynamite's contributions to comedy, but SO MUCH has happened since 2003 to even mention that guy like he was still pumping them out consistantly. It seemed out of touch.

The rest of the comedy section is pretty redeeming, but I love shit about comics talking about influences and their worst bomb on stage.

They wrote this three years after Spin declared alternative comedy trend of the year. Plus the list of "funniest" YouTube videos is unremarkable. I don't remember seeing any Super Deluxe videos there, or Human Giant (especially strange considering in 05 Aziz was their hot comic)

The new golden age of comedy and they have Don Rickles listed on the cover?
What was the best concert you've been to?

-- Probably Sade. It was just so sexy and relaxing.

Also Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, David Letterman. No one is particularly 'new' on there.

It's never too late for Don Rickles.

There needs to be an article on Internet Radio and comedy. That's pretty much my main source of comedy entertainment at this point. And I like to read magazine articles about what entertains me.

Toot toot tooting part of my own horn here. I am named on page 43, not for the amazing band that I've yet to start but I'm one of a few mentioned who had the privelege of narrating "Drunk History."

It's a great write-up on the series and Derek and one of the only publications that gets it right!

Quite pleased when I opened the mailbox and found this, especially after it seems like the last few covers have been The Hills, the Jonas Brothers and whatever other garbage Disney is selling to kids these days.

Overall a fun read and I enjoyed it.

Also: Robin Williams says that Patton is an underrated genius.

It was definitely nice to see a mention of "Drunk History."
