    RIP Leslie Nielsen

    Leslie Nielsen 2/11/26-11/28/2010

Airplane and Naked Gun are two shining examples of goofy/zany comedy that doesn't have to do anything but make you laugh. And Lesle Nielsen was a big part of those films, obviously. He always seemed like a genuinely nice guy too.

Thanks for the laughs Dr. Rumack/Lt. Drebin

Leslie Nielsen is in a better place.

A better place? What is it?

A construct to help people cope with grief, but that's not important right now.

I was gonna make one of those "Naked Gun and Airplane were two of the first movies that sparked my interest comedy and hold up better than practically anything else" posts - well, I guess I just did. RIP Mr. Nielsen - I just wanna tell you good luck in the afterlife, we all counted on you(for laughs), and you came through.

    Hey clips, there's an idea!!

Bummer. The king of deadpan stupidity.

    "Surely you can't be serious?"

"I am. And don't call me Shirley."

Nevermind...still haven't quite figured out the embedding of YouTube videos.

Link to Leslie Nielsen using his fart machine on a talk show.

Everyone remembers the comedies, and I did love him in Airplane! and Naked Gun, but I liked him as a serious actor, too. Played it so well. I loved Creepshow...

Leslie Nielsen: Dead and Loving it. Don't think Airplane holds up nearly as well as you ppl think it do, but dang, Naked Gun was a childhood favorite of mine and the aforementioned Dracula movie is an underrated classic. He was also good recently as the President in the Scary Movies. RIP

    Re: RIP Leslie Nielsen

What you just said about Airplane! is blasphemy. There are maybe ten comedies ever made that were as original and consistently funny as Airplane!

On another note, I think Nielsen's comedy lends his death (not being altogether tragic, as he led a longer and better life than most of us will) over to become something truly unique. I have sat on message boards for the last fifteen years writing depressed "R.I.P." messages in regards to the recently departed... but never until now have I felt as if cracking a joke about it might be reasonable or rationally decent.

I'm not gonna do it... but I don't think I would hate it if someone else did.

That sucks. Naked Gun and Police Squad still makes me laugh. His Creepshow segment is also one of my favorites. I just recently netflixed some 70s horror movie called "Day of the Animals" where Leslie goes nuts and fights a grizzly bear. Good times.

    RIP

Willhelm Schmidt: I couldn't disagree with you more! Airplane holds up better than some of Mel Brooks' "classic" comedies. History of the World for example doesn't seem nearly as funny or relevant as Airplane does. Sure it's very pun and slapstick driven, but that's comedy gold I think.

I mean, everyone's entitled to their opinions and all, I just think Airplane probably still makes new comedy fans on a daily basis...which is more than can be said for other films.

Not to go all into this, but I'm pretty sure no one on Earth considers "History of the World Part I" to be classic in any sense of the word.

"Airplane!", I'd say, holds up better than it ought to. It was more or less a new genre, and it's strange that it eventually led to these reference-laden comedies with no jokes, since most fans of "Airplane!" never saw "Zero Hour" or any of the movies it parodied and didn't particularly care about that aspect of it.

Yeah, you're probably right. Especially not here on AST. Bad comparison on my pat, I just meant that up against comedies of the same 5-8 year time period it's probably in the top 3, if not the best of the era.
