    Project X

Warner Bros. Pictures has unleashed the trailer for the Todd Phillips-produced Project X, directed by Nima Nourizadeh and starring Miles Teller, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Dax Flame, Nichole O'Connor, Thomas Mann, Alexis Knapp and Jillian Reynolds.

Opening in theaters on March 2nd, 2012, the R-rated comedy revolves around a group of kids documenting a house party that suddenly goes awry.

This looks like that "Virginity Hit" movie (which I tried watching once and turned off about 10 minutes into it in disgust at how awful it was). Also like "Cloverfield" mixed with "American Pie" I guess.

But hey, check out that MPAA rating.....now we're talking!

Looks more like an Axe Body Spray ad, but the description says "comedy".

The final trailer for this movie makes it look marginally more like a comedy:

I remain curiously befuddled by this movie though, and don't really understand why anyone thought it was a good idea. I'll probably have to stick my foot in my mouth when it makes 100 million dollars.

I had not one but two chances today to get advanced screening passes. Both times, I passed on it. I have no interest in this film.

I saw the trailer at the theater and I was legitimately depressed after watching it. It looks like such a bummer!

This trailer looks like it's for a teen sex comedy written by, like, a grizzled Vietnam POW who, after years of being tortured by Charlie, forgot what it was like to laugh or be young. Also he's kind of scared of girls now and doesn't like to think about them.

I'm a sucker for a teen sex comedy, so I'll watch it. I might hate myself later.

I think, though, that the idea of a neo-realist or cinema verite style comedy is good. Todd Philips worked with Andrew Gurland in the past, who did The Virginity Hit and Mail-Order Wife. They were filmed in the same way, so it's a little weird to me that Philips is producing a film that would make me think, "Oh, like the sorta comedy that guy you worked with would make but not by him?" Regardless, I think there's potential in the style.

The dude who co-wrote this was on Doug Loves Movies last night, and was very cool. He also co-wrote Scott Pilgrim & wrote 21 Jump Street. (He was also the kid's best friend in Free Willy). This doesn't look great though, based on the trailer.

Was The Virginity Hit really any good? I tried watching it once but literally, after the first 10 or 15 minutes, I was hating the characters so much, I turned it off. (And this is from a guy who will voluntarily watch stuff like "Vampires Suck" and "Epic Movie".) It was like sub-American Pie, sub-Porky's, just the most base, catering-to-horny-teenagers thing I had seen in a long time.

    Re: Project X

Watching this movie was vaguely depressing, so during it I started thinking about how it would be better if some comic filmmaker was to do a parody of one of these "horny teenagers trying to lose their virginity" type movies. Like back in 1990, Conan O'Brien, Robert Smigel, and Greg Daniels wrote into their "Saturday Night Live Movie" script a parody of "Risky Business" and movies of that type, where two teenagers are left alone with their dad's car for the weekend. But instead of joyriding in the car, they decide to smash it with sledgehammers. Then the dad calls and says they're coming home early, so they have to "fix" the car and there's a ridiculous scene of them with sautering tools, etc., trying to put the car back together in the 20 minutes it will take the dad to get home.

It would be funny if Conan, Smigel, and Daniels did an update on this script and made a good parody of dumb teenage comedies (probably not a thing that will ever happen). It's a very fertile subject for parody.

This movie, though, is not good. They found a way to make boobs unentertaining.

It was impressive how bad this movie was. You can't get me to laugh at midget jokes? REALLY?

    Re: Project X

To show you what I'm talking about, here's the first part of that Conan/Smigel/Daniels script:

See? Imagine how funny a whole movie in that style would be.

(I particularly love the "alphabetize it" joke, what a bizarre, Charlie Kaufman-type joke)

The Virginity Hit probably stunk, but Mail Order Wife was interesting. I've never had a comedy give me anxiety (because of the cinema verite style).
