    Re: Patton Oswalt Talk

Can anyone verify that he was actually on Tough Crowd w/ Colin Quinn?

    My favorite part of that interview;

"But my ultimate goal," says Madson, "is to worm my way in through Comedy Central, and do something on The Daily Show, and maybe become one of the correspondents. And as soon as Jon Stewart decides to retire, I'll slip into his chair, and I'll take over The Daily Show."

He does concede, however, "I'll have to start reading a lot more papers."
Oh, and writing my own jokes. And stop lying about writing for the people I'm stealing from.
Hey, check me out. I'm a ghost.

She proceeded to do ten minutes from Cook's CD, word for word. All of the over-annunciating, repetition of words, flailing of limbs, etc. Basically, if AST collectively had a nightmare, this would be it.

The worst part? She KILLED. People were doubled over with laughter. This was a Jesuit school, there were weird priests (redundant?) laughing it up. All of these people were aware that she had committed someone else's material to memory, and she still brought the house down.
Bro... stop stealing my fuckin' experiences...

No, but honestly I experienced almost the exact same thing. Freshman Orientation (2006, no less), this douchy bro gets up and does like 10-15 minutes of Dane Cook with near 'perfect' cadences. I think he started losing the crowd towards the end, because he just keeeept going, but yeah, they were lovin it for awhile.

I think we overestimate what the public gets about comedy and what goes into it. For the most part funny is funny, so for the most part people seem to enjoy the same comedy. However, If people in their everyday lives can get away with repeating a joke they saw on TV, or even somebody else they know; I'd say at best only a fair minority would ever give any credit. Why? Who cares?

It's sooo creepy to listen to this guy do Patton's bit. I don't want to laugh (for obvious reasons) and truth be told he's pretty good at keeping it that way; but it's impossible to not see the craft of the joke and want to laugh or enjoy them. It's like some asshole wearing you're wife's face as a mask.

It's also hard not to feel a little sorry for this guy in some way. And I couldn't be farther from having a "karma" perspective on the world. But this guy couldn't possibly have a bigger hole inside him that he thinks he needs to fill with false adoration and applause. And either he's too dumb to realize what this could lead to (possible, but i doubt it), or he lacks even the most rudimentary self-confidence to even tweak the jokes a liiiittle bit, to not try and copy every word, to even throw in soooomething original. That seems like a horrible existence.

Seriously? How does this even happen?

But I did enjoy the irony in his interview when he described the dismay and confusion of his friends. ""How do you stand up in front of people and talk?""

    Re: Patton Oswalt Talk

I was just going to post that Nick Madson thing when I realized you guys beat me to it.

You know, the kfc bowl thing in of itself is ripe for mistaken parallel thinking and I wouldn't be pissed if someone else merely commented on how terrible the fucking thing is in their own interesting way, you know? I'm not saying it would be thrilling to hear... but if it was different enough, I wouldn't care.

But the motherfucker stole the one line that makes Patton's discussion of the food uniquely his... and that demands some action. This fucking guy shouldn't be making money doing comedy. Period.

EDIT: Oh I unpaused the video at the point of my previous outrage to see him go on to speak about black angus steaks in a manner that seems very familiar. Let's get him.

(I left a nasty message on the Facebook page, and my profile pic happens to be the one with me & Patton. Nice.)

I take issue with "delivered in the exact same way," but I think you probably meant that differently than I'm interpreting it.

Patton: Was there any part of you that considered – prior to writing the blog entry – making this guy your own little Gallagher II-style replicant? Could've been lucrative...

    Re: Patton Oswalt Talk

I had the pleasure of sitting down and talking with Andrew King today, the unsung hero of this saga. I met him last night, when he was nervously emailing Patton about this. He didn't mention it to me at all, just wanted to talk comedy nerdery. But today I looked him up on Facebook and asked him to come by the comedy club so I could get the full scoop before I had to perform.

Listening to everything, I was struck by how sincere Andrew was. He's only 19 and was so sincere about how he didn't want any attention for this, he just couldn't not do something about what he'd seen and taped. I told the Penguin's Comedy Club manager what Andrew had done and in the midst of the conversation Andrew was offered a guest set. Cool right? And guess what? Humble, low key Andrew KILLED. This was his first non-open mic set in a club, and the owner asked him to do more guest sets tomorrow. I was so happy. Please keep an ear out for him and remember him in all of this. He is an absolute class act who never wanted to be a dick and only wanted to do justice to good comedy. The Quad Cities has one open mic a month. SO BRUTAL for a comedy scene. If he ever comes through your town looking for a little stage time, he has my full endorsement for whatever that is worth.

As I think about this more I am slowly beginning to think that we should tone down the hate mail being sent to the guy. Not because he doesn't deserve it, but because I think the guy must be mentally ill in some way to begin with and hey, who knows what could happen

Or he is one of those conman gypsies portrayed in that defunct Eddie Izzard show "The Riches"... that has also crossed my mind.

Well, I hope nobody is actually sending him mail. That's gross. But this is the most obvious joke stealing evidence I have ever seen, and he is still trying to lie his way out of it. He's a sociopath. Sad as he is, he can take a public dressing down.

I think to a point this has to be true. He may be a compulsive liar (among other things). How else could someone think to promote himself as "Comedy Central's Nick Madson" when his name is no where to be found on their website? (Or by saying that you write jokes for the comedians you steal from which no one believes because [1] if you can write jokes for others you can write jokes for yourself and [2] once you sell something it no longer becomes yours.) It's behavior you might expect from someone with a frayed wire... Making very big claims without thinking about the consequences.

Oh, that reminds me: I hope everyone remembers to watch my HBO special next month.

In his special skills section he puts "Rifles, shotguns, and handguns" before his ability to do impressions. Just some food for thought, guys.

I'm not sure if Patton is referring to suavepebble's post or something only he knows about. (I assume the latter.)

What a dick. Did the thief really think no one would do research? Any thoughts I had about "maybe the guy isn't so bad" are completely out the window now.

The mention of Laphroaig acted as a Philip K. Dick dogwhistle for me. Also, what Royalduckofdukes just said.

The guy is fucky and needs help.
