I am huge fan of The Pernice Brothers. Great lyrics and catchy but often melancholy hooks. Also, second that Superdrag should have been bigger. Albums following their one "buzz bin" hit feature some ambitious power pop.
Here's a lovely duet with Feist and Ben Gibbard.
A bizarre duet between Nick Cave and Shane Macgowan. (You can practically see the fumes coming off Shane. That handshake is priceless.)
Another indie one, but a pretty duet, and Colin Meloy's voice sounds sweetest on this song.
And Gary mentioning Serge Gainsbourg put me in mind of Gainsbourg's daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and her duet with Beck.
I was surprised that this song wasn't included:
Not surprised about the following two, but I really like them:
Also, Under fucking Pressure. Come on, guys.
Of course. Under Pressure is #1. Definitely surprised it didn't come up.
I put this in the covers thread recently but it's also a duet:
The song I really wanted to put here is not on youtube (because I'm so motherfucking hip) so I'm afraid you'll have to download it.

Wow. I didn't even think of Hunger Strike.
I used to love this album, but I kind of played it out. This song, though, still kills me with the chorus' hook.
Their last album wasn't the best, but I think this was a standout.
Without a doubt one of They Might Be Giants' prettiest songs, a cover of a Cub song.
Finally, in honor of Paul F. Tompkins, Todd Glass, and Dr. Cosby, here is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman and Philly native Alec Ounsworth with a song probably unrelated to Philadelphia.
My favorite song with a location in the title is Oh, Atlanta by Little Feat. My favorite version of it is from their fantastic live album Waiting for Columbus, which is decidedly funkier than the one below. However, this video shows them performing in '74 and is closer to the (still great) original:
Gary nailed it with Sufjan Stevens's Chicago, which is his best song:
Finally, if you have young children, i highly recommend the band I'm from Barcelona. They have many perky, happy songs that cause toddlers to bop and dance in an adorable fashion. They also happen to be really enjoyable, regardless your age. Fitting with the theme, their first hit was title We're from Barcelona. Of course, they're actually Swedish. I also don't know if Barcelona qualifies as a roadtrip destination for American listeners.
YOUTUBE HAS THWARTED ME AGAIN
I'll just put the lyrics.
Drop the goody-goody look and put on your shoes
Because I'm gonna recommend a little somethin' for you
(Oh yeah)
Grab your little Lulu or your Sally or Sue
And take her out to that Metropolis without no taboos
(Oh yeah)
What you say?
Who are you?
Never mind.
Just sing the tune.
Sextown U.S.A., we can go anywhere and it becomes...
Sextown U.S.A., we can go here or there, it all becomes...
The perfect place, and what a pace...
Man, I've heard of Peyton Place and Pigalle too
But this is better than the others, it's American too
(Oh yeah)
No one has the time to eat a meal or to think
Because they're way too busy doin' Kama Sutra-y things
(Oh yeah)
Look around
See the sights
Go to bed
What a life
Sextown U.S.A., we can go anywhere and it becomes...
Sextown U.S.A., we can go here or there, it all becomes...
The perfect place, and what a pace...
There's a whole lotta fish in the sea
Sextown U.S.A., we can go anywhere and it becomes...
Sextown U.S.A., we can go here or there, it all becomes...
The perfect place, and what a pace...
If you try to come here and you try to abstain
They'll send you to the prison for the criminally insane
(Oh yeah)
Maybe I'll just stay here for the rest of my life
Because it's better than commuting here with you every night
(Oh yeah)
Sextown U.S.A., we can go anywhere and it becomes...
Sextown U.S.A., we can go here or there, it all becomes...
The perfect place, and what a pace...

Surrounding every vein of silver is an ominous cloud.
I'm trying to figure out how to respond to this in a non-dickish way.....but, I can't come up with anything.-CarolineEAnd
I'm a little late to the podcast, but I'm almost caught up (two episodes left at the time of this post).
In regards to the XXX episode, death metal and goregrind (ya rly) have a lot of territory to uncover with explicit lyrics, but I guess they wouldn't work well for the show since they're usually difficult to understand, and the lyrics tend to be pathologically disgusting rather than amusingly tawdry. Take the following, for example:
Exhumed - Vagitarian II
Spoiler:
It's on YouTube if anyone is really that curious. Don't bother trying to hear any of the words, though.
Love the podcast, btw. Would like it on Facebook but I don't have an account.

Here are three good meta rock songs that I came up with off the top of my head. I think the key is to be somewhat cynical.
"He's the liar who lied in his pop song. And you're lying when you sing along."
A classic.
Dumb fan video, but here you go:
So glad to see Okkervil River show up in this thread! I think Gary would really like them, and perhaps Pat as well. Great band.
Rock Solid: Baby Talk
A different "Cry Baby" that I think both Pat & Gary might appreciate - The Motels - smokin' live version of a new wave classic from their second album. Check out the guitar work…
A lovely cover of a great Bob Dylan song - Them w/ Van Morrison

A truly lovely number from Nick Cave.
A fun ditty from TV Girl.
The Pixies. 'Nuff said.
