    Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

    Release Date: October 3, 2008
    Studio: Screen Gems (Sony)
    Director: Peter Sollett
    Screenwriter: Lorene Scafaria
Starring: Michael Cera, Kat Dennings, Rafi Gavron, Aaron Yoo
    Genre: Comedy, Romance
Plot Summary: "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" is a comedy about two people thrust together for one hilarious, sleepless night of adventure in a world of mix tapes, late-night living, and, live, loud music. Nick (Michael Cera) frequents New York's indie rock scene nursing a broken heart and a vague ability to play the bass. Norah (Kat Dennings) is questioning pretty much all of her assumptions about the world. Though they have nothing in common except for their taste in music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band's secret show and ends up becoming the first date in a romance that could change both their lives.

New York indie rock hipster scene doesn't really seem like an environment for good comedy, plus the title is fucking lame. On the other hand, Michael Cera.

I like the idea of this movie. High Fidelity was one of my all time top 5 movies of all time.

I'll go see this, I'll enjoy it, then I'll feel old and fat.

When I saw this thread title, I assumed it was a reboot of the Nick & Nora "Thin Man" comedies of the 30s & 40s, so I felt really, really old. But I went to the gym this morning, so I don't feel fat today.

sadly, it isn't... it's just an adaptation of some crappy young adult novel. they played some behind the scenes/interview-y piece during the advertising time prior to step brothers.

Yeah, I have to admit, this doesn't look all that great, but I figured because of the Michael Cera factor (and the Jay Baruchel factor) it was probably worth its own thread.

Maybe the best thing that will come out of this is if Cera hosts SNL to promote it.

I looked at this book once. It seemed...embarrassing. Of course this is only judging by its jacket and the first page. Maybe it'll be one of those things where a crummy book makes a good movie.

    Kat Dennings is attractive.

the director did 'raising victor vargas'.. so it might be worth checking out. although the trailer looks god awful.

I have absolutely no idea what the target demographic of this film is, and it's all because of Michael Cera. Take him out of the picture, and I'm sure it would all come into focus as some sort of After Hours for kids, but with Cera there, it makes me think there might be something more to it.

But then again, I'm still not seeing Juno.

Re: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Every generation has a couple of piece-of-shit movies like this one- something written by a 22 y.o. first-time writer, put out by an old-ass producer** who thinks this film will "capture the zeitgeist". These movies generally turn out to be ridiculous, especially in retrospect. For my generation, it was crap like "Pump Up The Volume", "Empire Records" and "Reality Bites".

    ** Disclaimer: I'm old-ass.

Empire Records may be totally ridiculous, but I can watch that shit over and over again.

Re: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

I saw this earlier this week. It's really not good.

Terrible romantic comedy cliches, horrible dialogue, bad gay jokes, and an annoying female lead. And Michael Cera is...Michael Cera, which is starting to become tiresome.

Even an appearance by the phenomenal Bishop Allen couldn't save it.

Also, it made me feel really lame for liking some of the bands featured in the film.

I totally get what you're saying.

I told my co-worker that is in love with Michael Cera that I want him to do a serious movie in which he plays a child molester or a psychotic murderer. Just to see what kind of talent he really has once and for all.

Plus, it'd be different. And please...a different wardrobe.

Re: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

is michael cera this generation's anthony michael hall? even if cera goes for something completely different, like anthony michael hall in 'edward scissorhands,' i think it would be so jarring that it wouldn't work since he's played the same character in 99% of everything he's done for the last 5 years. that kid might have to disappear for a few years once the infatuation with him wears off.

Re: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

I totally disagree. I think Cera could totally grow as an actor over the next couple of years, but is just riding out this wave for now because that's where the work is for him. Anthony Michael Hall never really showed any ability early on in his career to be anything other than a bit of a nerd. Edward Scissorhands was only jarring because it had been 4 or 5 years since we'd seen him at that point and he'd gotten a little fat.

I have confidence that Cera will surprise us all one day.

That said, the trailers for this movie look awful, like studio execs watched Juno and Superbad back to back and plugged it into the 'make a movie' machine.
