Had to look up "dp". (It's "display picture" [in THIS context], just in case you're like me and have never heard that before.)

Anyway, it's the Heat Miser from "Year Without a Santa Clause". At one point, he sings "I'm mister hundred-and-one" and they flash the number "101" next to him in a way that kinda looks like "LOL" to me. I'm not a fan of people typing "LOL" though, so maybe I'm sending off the wrong signals (if anyone else even sees it like that). But it struck me as funny, so... That's that.

Here's a short piece about Dave giving Conan a call over the holidays.

Wasn't there a "Never Mind the Bollocks" bumper in one of Conan's other shows, or am I mistaken? (There's one on Thursday's show, so just in case you shot past it whilst skipping commercials, that's why I'm asking.) Maybe he's used it on BOTH his other shows, and now he's used it THRICE!!

Thursday night's show was one of my favorites so far. Found myself having trouble breathing with laughter at the interview with Ricky Gervais, especially his reaction to Conan's (incredibly terrible) British accent. Kaitlin Olson's interview was very funny, she seemed comfortable (plus, she's awesome, in general) and then Cheap Trick surprised me with the string section and a very solid performance of a song I (sadly) mostly associate with Apu.

Why doesn't "the basic cable band" play licensed songs anymore? I noticed recently that they only play a few generic songs, presumably written by them, over and over again. I distinctly remember these guys playing covers of real songs coming out of breaks and stuff in the past which is why they proved to be one of the better late night bands. Simply a cost cutting measure due to a cable budget? Surely a 10 sec cover doesn't cost much if anything at all

The length of the song is irrelevant. Costs for these songs are quite high, and I'd imagine a network like NBC probably has an easier time of budgeting those types of things than TBS does. They have to do it for every other show on their network, so they might as well for the late night shows, too.

I recall reading someone from "Conan" talking on Facebook about the lack of licensed songs on the new show, and how it was a budgetary issue. It's too bad, of course, but I'm sure we'll all live.

It can't be a problem with basic cable budget cos its not a new thing at all. I, like Benjo, remember that they used to play licensed music in and out of commercial breaks, but they stopped doing this on the Tonight Show, maybe even during the last year of Late Night. Not only that but Jimmy Kimmel's Cleto and the Cletons also used to play licensed music, but not anymore. Dno about Leno and Letterman, but Fallon has generic music till a guest is introduced, but even then its normally a distinct parody of a licensed song. What does this all mean!? Why no more licensed songs on talk shows!? While a pretty minute component of the shows, it definately makes the house-band more of an enjoyable/useful part of the show.

I know for myself I always laught at least 75% harder when I get to hear 8 seconds of a Foo Fighters song coming in and out of a commerical break.

Who the fuck liked this. Not a discussion of comedy here, like I said it makes the house band have more of a point if they're playing real music. Why else is the house band there if they are just gonna play the same 5 shitty bland songs over and over. Seems like they could easily be cut from the budget.

It looks like 11 people liked it, one person bad post voted it...It's all anonymous, so we'll never know for sure.

Anyway, the whole point I was (very sarcastically) making about your gripes about the house band is that this is a comedy message board. And in no way does what the BCB plays in and out of commericals have anything to do with whether the show is funny OR entertaining. Honestly, you've found so many tiny, insignificant fucking things to pick on with regards to this show that I envision you crying tears of rage as you watch it every night.

    Just.Stop.Watching.

EDIT: Also, as a musician myself, I know it's approximately a badillion times more gratifying to play music I wrote myself. My guess is that Jimmy probably wrote most of the music, and he probably got help from everyone in the band. So considering their job for the 20 or so years has been playing covers of other people's shit, I think it's kind of cool. Bet they do too.

I liked it and I don't even like James. That's how much your nitpicking grates on me, Wilhelm.

Co-signed on you not watching anymore. Or, better yet, continue to watch and write your petty little niggling remarks on a piece of paper and flush it down the toilet instead of posting it in here. Of course then you'll have the C.H.U.D.'s annoyed with you, and believe me you do not want to make an enemy of the C.H.U.D.'s.

I haven't been here long enough to have any opinion on Wilhelm at all (and still don't, because I'd be screwed if I was judged on only a few comments), but "real music" made me derisively chuckle. Sorry.

The band is much more than just bumper music, they are part of the show. They could have La Bamba play "Taps" on a tin whistle and I still wouldn't want to get rid of them.

Holy ****! Maron will finally be back on Conan. I remember hearing him complain about not being invited to the new shows yet (TTS and TBS) a few times (one time being the recent Doug Benson WTF episode). It would be pretty funny slash interesting if Marc brought that up during the upcoming Conan segment.

Also, I'm surprised about the Gabriel Eglesias booking. I clearly remember thinking "here's Conan's team pandering to mainstream audiences" when he got on the Tonight Show last year (or was that two years ago? still getting a hang of this 2011 thing) but I guess not after all.

Small correction made. (Couldn't find the image they use on the show, though.)
