Thread: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon thread

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon thread

Nadsat Droog mentioned this briefly in one of his posts, but here's the full article about it from the NY Times:

With a new round of shake-ups in late-night television set to begin next year, Lorne Michaels has decided to try to get a jump on things by starting NBC’s next edition of “Late Night,” with its new host Jimmy Fallon, as a nightly entry on the Internet.

Mr. Fallon has been named as the replacement for Conan O’Brien when Mr. O’Brien takes over the “Tonight” show from Jay Leno next year, and Mr. Michaels, the long-time boss of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” who also serves as executive producer of “Late Night,” told television reporters here Sunday that he wants Mr. Fallon to work out as many of the rough spots in his presentation as possible in performances on a website.

Mr. Michaels said he did not know yet which site he will use to post the shows with Mr. Fallon, but he was sure of several of the plans:

The web performances will likely begin in the fall, long before the transition from Mr. Leno for Mr. O’Brien is set to take place. The entries will not constitute anything like an entire hour-long show. “I expect that we’ll do something like five or 10 minutes,” Mr. Michaels said.

But he said they most likely will be on every night, to try to establish the rhythm of a nightly show. And he said, “I’m going to post them at 12:30 every night, so people will begin to look for Jimmy at that time.”

NBC is expected to announce the schedule for the transition from Mr. Leno to Mr. O’Brien and from Mr. O’Brien to Mr. Fallon here tomorrow. NBC executives have previously said that Mr. O’Brien will probably stop production on his “Late Night” show in February, while he moves west and prepares to lead “Tonight” from a new stage now being built on the lot of the NBC Universal studio.

Mr. Leno is expected to continue until perhaps June. Mr. Michaels said Sunday that Mr. Fallon will definitely get some time on the air following Mr. Leno before Mr. O’Brien takes over “Tonight.” He pegged the likely start date for Mr. Fallon on the television version of the show as “sometime in the spring.”

One reason for trying out the show online, Mr. Michaels said, is that the Internet will allow Mr. Fallon more freedom in terms of what he can say and do, “more opportunity for experimentation,” Mr. Michaels said. But he added that he didn’t expect the show to push the line too far in terms of content. “I think we’re our own censors,” he said.

But the main reason for the idea, he said, was the experience of Mr. O’Brien, who endured a long period of uncertainty about whether he would survive after he assumed the desk on “Late Night” succeeding David Letterman. “Conan needed time to find his show,” Mr. Michaels said. “I think this will help Jimmy to do that".

I know it's silly, but I immediately imagined Lorne waiting up until 12:30 to post these himself.

Excellent way to use new technology and mix it with new media.

I think this is the first time anyone ever wrote or said "Mr. Fallon" without using an obvious tone of mockery.

I don't know if this will be the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon thread, but he has already picked his late night band: The Roots.

Re: Fallon Will Start ‘Late Night’ on the Web

I'm a little confused about what's going to happen with the transition from Conan to Jimmy. I thought that Jimmy wasn't taking over "Late Night" until May of next year, but that article says he will start in March. And reading over the article I posted again, it says that Conan is going to stop production in February in preparation for the move to L.A.

So where did I get May from? Is that when the new "Tonight Show" with Conan will start?
So does that mean there's going to be a period for a few months where it's going to be just Leno and Fallon on the air?

And also, I thought Jimmy was supposed to be doing a web version of his show "in the fall, long before the transition from Mr. Leno for Mr. O’Brien is set to take place". We're sort of getting to the point where it's past "fall". Shouldn't these web shows be on, kind of like...now?

P.S. I saw Jimmy last night at the Improv in Tampa and he was pretty funny. He's very good at working with an audience and at doing songs and song parodies. I don't know how he'll do delivering a topical monologue, but after seeing him I have a little more confidence in his abilities as a host.

Edit: Yeah, apparently Jimmy's first show will be March 2nd. On Dec. 8, the show will launch a behind-the-scenes video blog on NBC.com. That doesn't quite sound like what they first announced, but maybe they changed their mind.

Leno's last show is May 29th, 2009 and Conan's first "Tonight Show" will be June 1st. That seems like a long time for Conan to be off the air.

According to Variety article from a few months ago, Mike Shoemaker will be producing. Also, that fella from "Attack of the Show" (not mentioned in the article, but another I'd read and can't find right now)

The Roots is an amazing and unexpected choice, but I wonder how that's gonna work out exactly.

Yeah the Roots are to awesome to be just sitting around, playing a couple of measures of "Jump" by Van Halen. Hopefully they can utilize their talents or else they could have gotten any other band for the show.

I'm sorta wondering what Thought will do.

That said: ?uest will be a great sidekick-ish bandleader. He's a smart, funny guy. Enthusiastic about comedy, too.

Re: Fallon Will Start ‘Late Night’ on the Web

I was thinking more of the commitment: surely The Roots have better things to do than kick around with Fallon all the time?

But yeah, what will Thought do?

Well if you watched that video, ?uestlove basically said they were finished as a touring band and were committing to the show for (at least?) a year. He also said they would still record albums and would do so in the few weeks they'll have off during the year.

EXCLUSIVE: NBC’s Jimmy Fallon Making Online Debut Monday
Web videos to go live weeknights at 12:30 a.m.
By Alex Weprin -- Broadcasting & Cable, 12/5/2008 3:32:00 PM

Jimmy Fallon will make his online premiere as Late Night host Monday for NBC, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The web videos are being described as a “video blog,” and will go live with new installments every weeknight at 12:30 a.m., to coincide with Fallon’s upcoming duties as host of the Late Night franchise.

The hope is that fans will get used to seeing Fallon every night at 12:30, and can get a sense of what his take on late night will be. It will also give the show’s producers a chance to tweak and test content in advance of its broadcast debut in March or April.
The decision to launch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon online was announced in July at the Television Critics Association summer press tour by Late Night and Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels.

"Beginning it on the Internet for five or six months before it goes on will give us a chance to find the show," Michaels said at the time.

Fallon is taking over NBC’s Late Night when current host Conan O’Brien vacates the show to go to The Tonight Show next year, which is NBC’s current plan.

Re: Fallon Will Start ‘Late Night’ on the Web

I'm surprised nobody's suggested that this may be a stupid idea that won't work. It's what you do if you don't think the product is any good. Because if it's good you work up interest in the big premiere of the big thing everyone can't wait to see. This way, it's just a lifeless creep up to the yawn, premiere. Cue sound of a balloon slowly letting air out of itself.

I dislike Fallon, but to be fair, in this media climate, having a big TV talk show isn't what it was in 1994, when Dave and Jay duked it out. Hell, it wasn't even that then. Someone should cue up a dying car industry metaphor.
