Thread: Last Comic Standing

  1. #1

Re: The "not worth it's own thread" thread

Holy shit is Last Comic Standing unwatchable now. I can't believe they let that Esther Ku in over so many funnier, more experienced comedians. Her set last night was embarrassing... She barely has 3 minutes of material.

God's Pottery is also funny for about 5 minutes, and then they are simply flat out annoying... especially on a show like this. They are a one joke group, and the joke gets old fast. I know some people here like them, but once you've seen them do one song, you've seen the entire schtick. I was cringing during the boxing ring segment, and when they were interacting with other comics....

I was really, really pissed last night because there were so many people that were far more deserving that never made it to the house. I know they were casting for the house, and not picking the best comics, but the best comics could have at least brought some laughs to the segments... As it was, it was about 2 hours of completely unfunny television.

I was crushed to see God's Pottery go. They brought an ounce of levity to something that keeps screaming "FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!"

Hopefully the exposure GP has received is enough to get them booked all over the country, they are a swell pair

I thought the boxing ring was much funnier than their song. If only because Ron G looked genuinely angry at them. That guy can't get kicked out soon enough.

It was pretty clear that the rest of the house didn't want to have to deal with those guys being 'on' all the time.

Did Iliza Schlesinger really not connect lying to Ku with her getting called out? She seems smarter than that. Who was Ku supposed to pick?

I was thinking the exact same thing....and Ku didn't really acknowledge (after the fact) that that was the reason either.

Re: The "not worth it's own thread" thread

I've never seen a final 10 on LCS so pathetically awful.

At this point, the house is divided into three segments; People I actively hate (Marcus, Adam Hunter, Schlesinger, Ron G), People I feel sorry for because they've got 2 minutes of material and are going to embarrass themselves (Papa CJ, Dye, Foot) and finally People who are probably better than this, but still come across as mediocre (Cullen, Ramey, Tavare).

My favorite part of last night's episode was when all the comics were sitting back stage talking about what a one trick pony Esther Ku was, and Papa CJ is NODDING IN AGREEMENT. That's the kind of irony you just can't buy, not even from customer service in India.

Oh, and it was nice to see Jon Reep just mentioning rednecks win the 'Best Joke Ever' award.

What is everyone's problem with Marcus? Do people really hate impressionists that much?
So far, I haven't seen him do anything to inspire so much hatred. He's done a reasonably funny routine about "Willy Wonka", and some pretty accurate impressions. I laughed at him doing his Christopher Walken, talking about Esther Ku's laugh.

I'm kind of hoping he wins actually, because I have tickets to see the "Last Comic Standing" tour in Orlando in December, and I'm sort of dreading it if it means having to sit through Papa CJ or Ron G.

Edit: I should stress that really I would like Sean Cullen to win, but since he's the funniest, I doubt he will.

i've only seen parts of 2 episodes, so maybe not the best judge, but i'll tell you my opinion regardless. i don't know how long marcus has been performing, but his stage persona seems to borrow very heavily (down to the delivery) from dave attell. maybe he's still pretty new and is just aping attell, i don't know. for other people, the impressions may remind them of dante. and, walken impressions are kinda overkill.

i'm not qualified to give this kind of analysis!

this is its own thread now/again.

I'm not watching, and I've only seen God's Pottery once, but I do think it's a one-joke thing that shouldn't have been on the show. Sketch people maybe, but this, it just doesn't really make sense.

That's what I thought. I also it was a very creative way to spin those jokes. Sad to see them go, just for the sheer fact watching them do challenges would have been funny. Also congrats to Todd Glass at #9 for best joke.

I don't know what it is about Paul Foot, but he makes me giggle like a little girl. What a ridiculous person

    Re: Last Comic Standing

I'm sad to see God's Pottery go, mainly because they were the funniest thing happening in the house and in the boxing challenge, but then again if I were the audience during the elimination show and all I had to go on was that one song, I would have voted for Iliza to win, too. GP certainly can be funny, and their commitment to their characters is amazing, but a lot of the songs are lacking in jokes, or have titles that are the only punchlines in the songs. For the most part, once they announce the name of the song, that's the biggest laugh they get during its performance.

Also, I have a fair amount of hate in my heart for Papa CJ, and yet I've found myself saying "I know what you're thinking..." in an Indian accent a lot recently, and that makes me laugh. I guess that counts for something. Any comic with the balls to tag all their jokes by telling the audience that he knows what they're thinking deserves credit for at least being blissfully ignorant of what constitutes hacky comedy.

"I know what you're thinking, sir -- 'He's going to die!'" No. No he wasn't thinking that. Why would he be thinking that? Because you insulted Camilla Parker Bowles in the US?

    Re: Last Comic Standing

All of GP's sets have made them seem like one trick ponies, so I was surprised when they actually started to grow on me last night. I'm a sucker for any joke with a Harry Potter reference in it. And I loved that Ron G was so pissed that he called them "Dumb and Dumber" from backstage during their set. With GP gone, Sean Cullen is all that interests me anymore. I've been laughing at "and a Pilgrim fell out!" all week.

Hacky comedy hasn't reached India yet.

    Re: Last Comic Standing

I loved God's Pottery right away, but thought their act would get stale pretty quick. I wasn't sure how they could keep up the "one joke" act and keep it funny.

It turns out, I was surprised to find them laugh-out-loud funny every time they performed, and most other times they were on-screen.

Certainly a lot of the reason is that I spent a lot of my life involved in churches, and saw many acts -- I mean ministers -- who did what GP did, only in earnest. It's a part of culture ripe for satire, and they get it so right so right often that is keeps me laughing. I'm not arguing against their elimination; in this setting I didn't expect them to last long. But if they ever come near my neck of the woods, I'd certainly go see them live.

    Re: Last Comic Standing

I read this on another message board, and I think it's true- maybe the best forum for God's Pottery is on a half-hour Flight of the Conchords type show on HBO, not on LCS.
If they had a show where they could do their songs, mixed with Borat-type segments interacting with the public in character, that would be great. But what they do isn't really standup, so they didn't belong on this show.

Paul Foot even seemed to be saying this when he said he'd rather see them in a sitcom than have to live with them in person in the house.

Watching this show makes me feel almost exactly like the way I felt when I found out that my car was stolen

    Re: Last Comic Standing

I hope I don't hear any more variations of you-are-fat-cows-are-scared-in-India...

I want to like this show so much, but have resorted to tivo to actually watch the 10 minutes of comedy. There seems to be a lot of hype on the comics but not a lot of follow through in material.

    Re: Last Comic Standing

I still find some entertainment from this show. I actually kind of like the backstage critiquing of the sets.

Papa CJ makes me cry in bed for the future of stand-up comedy. I swear he is exaggerating that accent. Waiting for him to say, "I know what you are thinking, Who let Apu on stage...?!?!?" (exaggerated accent) "THANK YOU, COME AGAIN!" (insert turn around about India taking American's jobs and/or women)

As much as I love self-deprecation, there is a pretty huge line where it crosses over into obnoxious and lazy instead of coming up with good material.

Are they really bringing Carrot Top next week? They have balls, HUGE steroid balls.

    Re: Last Comic Standing

Next week they're having a prop competition, judged by Carrot Top....

AND THEY VOTED THE ISRAELI PROP GUY OFF THE SHOW??? Smart thinking, guys.
