I just don't get what someone can teach you about your own stand up act, unless you just want to end up as a road hack...

If you live in a moderately sized city, there should be an open mic. If there isn't, start one. Then do stand up until you're good or quit because you're not.

Now you all owe me $800.

I'd like to drink her minimum.
Garrett Gonzalez Morris (born February 1, 1937) is an American comedian and actor from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was part of the original cast of the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live, appearing from 1975 to 1980

For the British flautist, see Gareth Morris.

It's one of those 'bringer' shows, as in, "She bring-her ugly friend to cock-block".

Guys, I need help: some people tell me that when sleeping with a lady, I should have some sort of persona. Others tell me to just be myself and do what I think is funny. Any advice? Should I simply "be amazing"? Additionally, how do I get the audience back when things start going bad?

Hardly, this Boot Camp gives you an opportunity to network with other comedians! It will teach you how to get bookers to book you: by being bros with Kyle Cease and company!

Or, you could spend the money on an eightball, give it to the booker and cut out the middleman!

These are hot comedy insider tipz!

Do I need the 'Boot Camp' thread if I'm already using the 'Stage Time' forum?

Please advise. My 17 year old brain can't decide on its own.

I am hosting a seminar that will make your brain 18, no matter how old the rest of you is.

I was going to make a cheesy joke about those seminars actually being called something very similar to 'Boot Camp.' I refrained from the joke because I wasn't being real to myself and presenting who the fuck I AM as a person. Because of these lessons, I did not post that shitty pun.

Let's just say that I was going to make the word 'Boot' end with a certain consonant that doesn't always play by the rules.

"People who aren't successful love to talk bad about people who are. That way they can justify why they chose to fail."

I don't believe this point can be argued without defining "success". It seems to me that comedians like Kyle Cease define success as filling rooms at the expense of challenging the preconceived stereotypes that an audience brings into that room. Of course more people are going to enjoy someone standing up on stage reinforcing their common prejudices but that doesn't mean it's good any more than Walmart making record profits undercutting their competition by hiring slave wage labor in China makes them good. Great comedy speaks truth to power, holds a mirror up to society and destroys stereotypes. Shitty comedy speaks bullshit to morons. There's a lot more money in the latter.

    1) Since when?
    2) Says who?
    3) Your quote would be entirely accurate if you added two words and a comma to the beginning of that quote: "To me,"

Just as you criticize one person making an over-generalization based on a personal definition of the term "success", you are guilty of the same mistake in using your personal definition of "great comedy."

(Even if I probably agree with how you'd define "great comedy"--I don't need my comedy to speak truth to power, to hold a mirror up to society or destroy stereotypes for me to like and admire a particular comedy performance...)

pg--I like comedy that doesn't always have to take itself so damn seriously...which is one reason I'm not sold on Kevin's videos for Kyle's Boot Camp...and, ironically, one reason I've enjoyed Kyle's stand-up.--seattle

And when you wake up in the morning you're pissed you didn't get to try out that new thing.

I've been enjoying this thread; like a fine diamond, it has many facets, and it reflects the reader in different ways when you examine it from different angles.

I do have to call bullshit on the idea that successful comics don't talk smack about other comedians. Every comedian shits on other comedians; especially their friends. It's just part of the job. That's why roasts happen.

If I was opening for David Cross the room would be filled. Otherwise it's a little dicey.

I would like to take this opportunity to shit on my friend Matt Braunger. He is a known liberal, a user of inappropriate language, a serial fornicator, a harborer of opinions seditious to common decency, and a frequent imbiber of foul liquors.

    Re: Kyle Cease

    Some good advice from Gallagher...

AVC: What qualities should a good comedian have?
G: They need to be empathetic. They need to be a member of the audience. They need to think, “What is my audience thinking and doing while I’m performing?” That’s how you perform. What would you want your celebrity to do? What kind of a show would you want? You want somebody that just comes out there and doesn’t appear to be prepared and does what the hell they want to do? I don’t say the things onstage that I want to say; I say the things I think the audience wants to hear and would enjoy. You’re a servant of the audience.
