    God Bless America

Wow. This is the trailer for Bob Goldthwait's new movie. If you thought "World's Greatest Dad" was a controversial subject for a movie, I predict there's going to be a LOT of discussion about this film when it comes out. I'll let the trailer speak for itself:

Edit: Trailer replaced with a non-crappy version that doesn't make you watch ads

    Re: God Bless America

I was so excited when he announced this. Stay and World's Greatest Dad were both on my top lists the years they came out. And I'll be glad to see Joel Murray take on a sizable role in something.

The synopses, for those of us without access to Hulu:
Loveless, jobless and possibly terminally ill, Frank has had enough of the downward spiral of America. With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and decides to off the stupidest, cruelest and most repellent members of society with an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy, who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement. From stand-up comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait comes a scathing and hilarious attack on all that is sacred in the United States of America.

The hulu ad that played before I could watch this was for the Make A Wish foundation.

I love that guy from Mad Men—he had a bit in The Artist and I thought, "So great to see him getting more work!" but now look at him. YEAHHHHH!

    Re: God Bless America

It just occurred to me that the recording-a-shooting-on-a-cell-phone joke is kind of a logical offshoot of Bobcat's classic joke about Rodney King, isn't it...."If you ever see me getting beat up by the police, put the video camera down and HELP ME". That was originally a Bobcat joke, wasn't it?

This seems really interesting to me! Also makes me think of that one Michael Douglas movie (Wonderboys).

This movie should be available on Video on Demand starting tomorrow (not in theaters until May 11th).

Bob did an AMA on Reddit where he talked about the movie here.

    Re: God Bless America

I will give credit to Bob for making a very un-mainstream movie (in fact, I think this will be difficult to find any kind of theatrical release whatsoever, given the recent school shootings and the Gabriel Giffords thing, this is just a bad time to be releasing a movie like this in general). However, I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I ended up liking it. The basic premise of the movie is a good one, and the opening 30 minutes which take on stuff like Jersey Shore, My Super Sweet 16, Jackass, etc. are on point in their satire and funny. After the female character gets introduced and her and Joel Murray's character start killing people, the movie becomes a little unfocused though. I think they kind of lost the point of Murray being fed up with all the low-brow, horrible stuff in our culture and the movie just becomes a "one guy becomes fed up and loses it" story, like Falling Down. The killings become less motivated by his frustration with a lack of "kindness" in our society and just become him killing anyone that aggravates him.

Also, there is a scene in the movie where the female character starts talking about how she hates Diablo Cody and "Juno", which is funny, but at the same time she spouts a 5-minute long monologue about how great Alice Cooper is, and how Fallout Boy and Green Day suck. Bob really shouldn't be casting aspersions at Cody and her often overly-clever dialogue when he has really long scenes in this movie of Murray arguing with a Fox News-type reporter or shooting at a crowd of "God Hates Fags" people that go on and on in their "Let me belabor my point so you understand"-ness.

So the movie was frustrating like this, you want to agree with what Bob is saying because most of it is true, but at the same time his message gets overly clouded with a lot of extreme violence that is just violence for violence's sake. Also, the ending is kind of unsatisfying.
There is a subplot about a William Hung-type "American Idol" performer that takes up a lot of the end of the movie and seems really dated (Does anyone really remember William Hung?)

I loved it. Thought it was an extremely refreshing and daring movie. I'm young, though. I like a lot of things.

Murray is indeed really good in this, but I will give you an idea of what I'm talking about when I say I had problems with some of the stuff in the movie.

    Re: God Bless America

I was thinking there were 3 Murray brothers, but then I remembered there's 4, there's JOHN Murray too who was in "Moving Violations". Then I remembered that show they had briefly on Comedy Central where they were going around the country playing golf at various golf courses.

I love One Crazy Summer....."Hey, I'm a responsible adult now", then he drives off and you see the Christmas tree still stuck to the roof of his car. I wish Savage Steve Holland would make another movie.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I vividly remember a scene where the class watches one of those driver's safety films that are overly graphic. I think the name of the movie they watch is "Blood Runs Red on the Highway", and it involves a bunch of kids getting off a school bus and getting run over by a giant truck or something. I remember when I saw this as a little kid, it really disturbed me and kind of gave me nightmares for days afterwards. It seems silly now, because it's obviously meant to be funny, but it seemed really real to me as a kid.

Maybe we should make this a thread, things you remember from your childhood that upset you at the time but seem stupid now.
