    Release Date: April 27, 2012
    Studio: Universal Pictures

    Screenwriter: Jason Segel, Nicholas Stoller
Starring: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans

    MPAA Rating: Not Available
    Official Website: TomandViolet.com

Plot Summary: The director and writer/star of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" reteam for the irreverent comedy "The Five-Year Engagement." Beginning where most romantic comedies end, the new film from director Nicholas Stoller, producer Judd Apatow ("Knocked Up," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin") and Rodney Rothman ("Get Him to the Greek") looks at what happens when an engaged couple, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. The film was written by Segel and Stoller.

More like The Five-Year Long Trailer, am I right? Seriously, though, does anyone feel they need to see more than two and a half minutes of that?

There's a new commercial running now featuring the scene with the little flower girl where she shoots an arrow into Emily Blunt's leg. In the commercial, they have her saying "I'm Katniss!" before she fires the arrow. WTF? Is this Judd Apatow doing a little post-production touch-up to make the movie more "current"? This new ad also features a scene where Mindy Kaling compares Jason Segel to a "sexy Frankenstein". It definitely makes the movie look more appealing than the lame trailer.

I saw this at a preview screening a couple of months ago and the Katniss line was not in there. In fact, I bet it STILL isn't in there, and that bit was dubbed just for the trailer. Have you no shame, Mr. Apatow, at long last?

The movie's pretty good. Overlong, of course, but solid. I just wish it were better at integrating the comedy into the actual story. It's mostly outsourced to ancillary characters doing tangential improv.

That's the description I've been searching for to sum up my problems with a lot of modern comedies.

I'm guessing that Judd Apatow does not personally make the commercials and trailers for the films he produces. I'd further guess that they're made by marketers, who know that The Hunger Games made $150 million in its first weekend.

Red-band trailer for this is a lot better:

Is that Kumail at :57 into the trailer? Also Brian Posehn, Chris Parnell, a few other people I didn't realize were in this

Posehn has a pretty sizable part. Stoller told me they just kept adding stuff to it. Also told me that they had to cut a bunch of scenes of Kumail being hilarious for editing rhythm's sake - Kumail really only has one quick scene. Made sense, because it was part of a sort of bang-bang-bang montage, but expect some very funny outtakes, from what Nick told me.

This movie is really funny, and the supporting cast is like a comedy nerd's dream team.

I liked this movie, but it was about 40 minutes too long.

    Re: The Five-Year Engagement

I finally saw this last night on HBO, and it was better than I thought it would be. I think the lame romcom-looking trailer put me off on seeing it for a while, but there are definitely lots of funny supporting turns by the other cast members (Brian Posehn and Chris Parnell especially). Alison Brie was very good in it and gave a much different kind of performance than she does as Annie on Community. Like most Apatow-produced movies, it was slightly too long, but overall it was enjoyable, if not quite as good as Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

The little girl in the movie says "I'm Pocahontas!" before she fires the arrow into Emily Blunt's leg. I remember the cheesy commercials that aired last spring with her line dubbed over as "I'm Katniss!" Sheesh

I love Alison Brie on "Community" and "Mad Men"...but her English accent falls flat on its face from word one in this movie.

I'm surprised they didn't change it to "I'm Merida!" for the home video version.
