A friend suggested Ashley Schaeffer was just a version of Ric Flair. Also, agree with everyone that this episode was absolutely bonkers in the best possible sense. And, I share a curiosity about how the show pivots from a version of The Most Dangerous Game, cross-dressing kabuki genital rubbing, Mammy, and Mexican Grimace among other details.

The fact that the Koreans were into it was a pretty awesome choice.

The more I think about it the more I want Ashley to be immediately arrested for murder. It should be a huge scandal that permeates throughout the entire season. Going back to that scene knowing he has no idea what he is doing would be so fucking funny. Just fucking murders some guy out of the blue and instantly goes to jail for life and becomes known all over the country as the cannonball killer.

Then Kenny visits him in jail and gloats as Ashley tells him he hates jail: Well that's what you get for fuckin killing someone with a cannonball n shit in front of a bunch of koreans you fucking idiot.

The WOOOOOOOOOOO! certainly seem likes it, but I feel like they mentioned or someone here mentioned it was based on this guy:

    This is an awesome idea.

I'm boggleminded that you guys loved this episode so much. This show has always been grounded in SOME kind of reality and that dinner party was not at all. It was way outside the tone of the show. It was like a scene from...well, an absurdist Will Ferrell movie. Silly and arbitrary and not even that amusing. Although I liked the little kid with the golf club.

And yeah it's a little Ric Flair, a little of the car dealership guy, two Charlotte staples. Rumor is that when that white dog is in the commercial it means he's holding coke.

    Re: Eastbound & Down

I kind of feel like the show has always been trying to burst out of that. With every new episode, something just a little bit crazier - and outside of reality - happens. The thing I like about anything that Jody Hill's involved in is that the side characters in their universe always pretty much accept the crazy guy unconditionally which to me means that they are the truly crazy ones. So, when a guy that's even way crazier shows up, the shit's going down. I'll agree that it was a lot to show in one episode, but it's the last season and let's get this fucking shit going!! I think Observe and Report was the same way where it would sort of weave in and out of crazy and the movie's own reality. I guess that's why I really like their stuff because just when things start to slow down and you're settling in they hit you with something you weren't expecting. Maybe that's not traditional storytelling (and maybe it's an example of bad storytelling) but it's exciting for me and so if it has to be forgiven, I'm willing to do it.

Kind of surprising that Sudeikis's arc only lasted 3 episodes. Too bad, I will miss him, he was a great character.

Even though I had a hunch about what was going to happen to Sudeikis' character when the scene started, I'll admit I was still surprised by how weirdly upsetting it was when it happened especially in the context of a pretty silly comedy show

He'll be back as a zombie. A wakeboarding zombie. Zombies are in this season.

I still like the show, but I feel like the uprooting started in Season 2, with Kenny in Mexico, and there being no repercussions for his cartoon antics. It's at the point now where no matter how depraved Kenny is, there's no blowback, and it's far less funny to me. The individual lines and delivery are funny ("I'm trying to get him to eat this lettuce!") but basically half the equation was removed for me after Season 1. Kenny was in the real world, and was struggling. Now it's all off the rails in a comic book world without any anchor.

What repercussions did Kenny have at the high school in season 1?

Oh my god, I just finished watching episode 2 and..... oh my god. The last 11 minutes of that episode is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.

I love how deep and fucked up they made Ashley Schaeffer's world.

I had to watch that whole sequence twice immediately.

The music on this show continues to be awesome; I knew I recognized this song (from Stevie and Maria's fixing-up-the-nursery montage) from somewhere. Turns out it was used in a similar '80s-style montage on "Family Guy" (when Peter and the guys were fixing up a bar), but it's originally from "Revenge of the Nerds":

Nice use of Alan Price's "O Lucky Man!" theme during the end credits too.

Maybe "repercussions" was a bad word choice. I guess the environment offers less tension/irony?

In Season 1 Kenny is surrounded by teachers, children, and a straight-laced family. His self-importance is delusional because he's clearly a has-been living under someone else's roof.

By season 3, Kenny is actually pitching for a team, has an equally over-the-top wingman, a beach front property of his own on Myrtle beach, a nubile college girlfriend, AND a boogie board. His lines are funny, but when he's being vulgar with Shane it's just not as effective as when he's doing it in front of a 9th grade class.

Just nerding out a bit - I haven't really formally admitted to myself that I think it's dropped off since S1 yet.
