The AVClub has another article about podcasts. The important part is this:

And it’s the main reason listeners won’t hear another season of Earwolf Challenge, a sort of reality competition in which podcasters competed for a spot on the Earwolf network. The show had anemic growth—starting at 4,000 downloads and ending at 6,000 over the course of two months. That’s too low to attract advertisers, the show didn’t really warrant merchandise, and it required a lot of time to assemble. “Honestly, to me it was shocking with how many big names we had as guests doing master classes on not just podcasts, but how to create anything,” Ullrich says. “There’s an example of something we tried that we thought was really interesting, was really different, and had a clear value proposition for listeners.”
    No new Earwolf Challenge? Boooooo!

Guests doing master classes? I think that's a bit of an exaggeration on Ulrich's part.

I think that is probably the first and last time the English words "clear value proposition" will be used in a sentence referring to podcasts.

Damn, that sucks. I was hooked on the show from the first episode.

Other shows may have better numbers, but EC probably had an unusually high proportion of completist listeners. Wish there was more upside to that.

That's a real shame, although in a way I'm sort of relieved. I was unhealthily addicted while it was on. My whole life revolved around the earwolf challenge.

No second season? So you mean I had Wittels, Besser, Tompkins, Morris, Daly and Maron on my indie podcast for no reason???
