    Doug Stanhope general thread

we don't really have one, the search results are generally all live shows/tour dates. so, this news can kick off this thread. pretty quick turnaround from recording to CD.

    ----------
Stanhope's 7th album, From Across the Street, is set to be released on November 24th, 2009. Originally intended to be released under the name Live from Cape Fear (and later I Ain't Never Won Nothin' In My Life), the CD was recorded by Stand Up! According to promotional materials mailed to reviewers, "half of the proceeds made from the CD sales will be going towards medical bills incurred by maintaining the cryogenically frozen remains of his mother's cats at the Bisbee Forever Hope life suspension facility in accordance with her wishes."

Is this legit or a joke? I know he lives in Bisbee, and that Bisbee is a weird place, so it wouldn't surprise me. Then again, freezing your cats?

    oh man I can't wait

I don't know why he doesn't get more love around here. He's one of the best, other comics seem to respect him, he does his whole operation outside the normal channels (his fuck you to the Edinburgh Fringe was pretty amusing) but for some reason the biggest alt-comedy community seems mostly indifferent. Why is that?

I've heard people say they have to "get past" his politics. If that's true I think it's a little sad. People claim that the problem with conservatives and stuff isn't that they disagree, it's the hypocrisy, that they're being intellectually dishonest and you can't have a real discussion that way. Which is true. But that doesn't apply to Stanhope. His worldview is thoroughly consistent in a way Adam Carolla's is certainly not, and he's funnier than Carolla, so what gives? I don't fully agree with everything he says (although I'm pretty liberal and I'm on board with the VAST majority of it, and some of the stuff I don't quite endorse may well be humorous exagerration) because he's a real person, not a right or left wing cartoon.

By talking about his politics I'm making it sound like he's some sort of fascist. My real point is that he got this bogus label because "libertarian" has become a scary buzzword for liberals. He talks about social stuff, not political stuff. He, much like myself, voted for Obama knowing it wasn't gonna change anything. If someone really can't "get past his politics" I'd love to hear what he says in his act that's so objectionable.

    Re: Doug Stanhope general thread

I love Stanhope, after getting past an unfair view of him formed by his brief tenure on the Man Show. I assume he doesn't get much love here because the core of this board is the LA alternative scene, Largo-UCB-Tiger Lily, etc. If you're not playing those gigs, you tend not to get mentioned too much. Also, for a time there, we made AST a self-fulfilling echo chamber, talking more about the performers who post here. That's still true to some degree. Eugene Mirman never got much play here--mostly because he's based out of New York--until he started posting. Same with Marc Maron. It also appears to help to do a free podcast that's good.

So I hope we do talk more about Stanhope, but to guarantee it, we need to get him to post here and do a free weekly podcast.

P.S. Stanhope is on Marc Maron's WTF podcast on Monday.

    Re: Doug Stanhope general thread

I don't know where people are getting the notion that Stanhope isn't liked on AST. In fact, the only negative stuff about him I've ever read here is what is assumed in the minds of those that love him posting here.

I've always thought he was great, but think he's also lost a lot of speed off his fastball in recent years. Similar to Dave Attell, in that there are certain comic personas that simply cannot sustain at the highest level over a long period of time. Even if some of it is exaggerated, substance abuse stories can run a serious risk of getting redundant over the years.

    Re: Doug Stanhope general thread

"Mostly indifferent" is how AST seems to me, the "getting past his politics" stuff is me arguing in the darkness against comments I've heard elsewhere.

I don't see his act as tired. As far as drug stories I think they all have a point of their own apart from "duuuuuude I was so fucked up." Describing DMT, birthday X in Alaska, rolled by a tranny hooker...not a ton of overlap. I know he claims to be "out of shit," and I see what he means, but I thought No Refunds was as good as anything he's done.

Excellent news that he's gonna be on WTF tomorrow. That is turning out to be such a great podcast.

What do people cite when they call Doug Stanhope right-wing? I don't get where it comes from.

I think it's from his association with and candidacy within the Libertarian party. On Maron's podcast, he pretty much admitted that once he got into that party, he realized it was unfortunately a lot more about gun-loving, home-schooling fundamentalist nutjobs than anything he believed in.

That was an interesting podcast. I think he holds a libertarian philosophy/outlook, but yeah he seemed to be losing faith in it as a political movement. He seems to be getting more and more nihilistic as far as politics are concerned.

I was worried he was losing steam (as alota comics do when they get a solid fan base-- they're suddenly able to get a laugh just on certain mannerisms that their fans love and will react to, and it makes the writing quality a bit lazier), but I saw him in DC last month and was relieved to see his new stuff was pretty top-notch.

I'm fairly new here so I haven't noticed the Stanhope haters, if indeed there are any. But for anyone who assumes his comet tail is fizzling, I disagree - I think he's scorching right now, just a notch below Louis CK (who has been absolutely in the pocket these past two years)

Over the last three years Stanhope has been as good as anyone. Exeunt, whatever that means.

    Re: Doug Stanhope general thread

saw Stanhope last night in Sacramento. it was incredible. included in the crowd was his girlfriend Bingo's parents and sister, and he did his typical act, realizing maybe one bit in that they were there, and just went with it and went back to them again and again.

but the amazing thing was it was an hour of all new stuff, save for the closing bit which is either on No Refunds or From Across The Street. that's a whole new hour in 6 months since the recording of From Across The Street (3 months since CD release). definitely check him out this time around if you still have the chance.

in news news, i guess he's been on a few segments of Newswipe with Charlie Brooker [UK].

    remaining tour dates

edit: also, the least amount of cretin monster fans that he usually attracts that i've ever seen. good job Sacramento. Chazz Hawkins opened and i really liked his stuff, even though he was given a pretty short set.

I'll be seeing him when he comes to Atlanta on 5/20. I missed him last year and it still bugs me.

I'm planning on seeing him when he comes to London in September. Across The Street is really fucking incredible. The joke at the end is something else.

I think "Across the Street" is his best album. Less preachy and just more funny. Love it.
