And the Michael Richards episode was good but really hard to watch. It's pretty clear that Richards has a hard time relating to the rest of the world. It's sad to me that he royally fucked up his career in comedy, which would seem to be the only successful interface he has with other people. But I don't know the guy. And he certainly burned the bridge himself. But it still seems pretty sad.
Did anyone else cringe a little when Michael Richards did that fake (I'm going to assume spanish) language after he pretended to be a junk man?

I'm with you, mostly, but one of the greatest standups ever is probably an overstatement. One of the most successful, obviously, and yes he perfected the observational style that was so prevalent in the '80s, but I might argue that he's not even the best within that subset. (Regan's funnier to me, and maybe some others. Reiser?) What he did, really, was carpetbomb the landscape of mundanity so thoroughly that it was almost pointless for anyone else to continue with the observational approach. Some did, and a few brought originality to it, but after Seinfeld it was just like, fuck, you gotta do something different now. His work ethic and his precision were impressive, but the ouvre is to me not all that exceptional (watch I'm Telling You For The Last Time and see if you agree).
The sitcom, of course, is a different matter, and regardless of Larry David's work could not have existed without Seinfeld's act as a foundation. All credit due there. But it's important to note that Seinfeld himself was never remotely as weird or absurd as the show got -- he was the opposite of weird as a comic, since his whole MO was "didja ever notice..." relatability -- so he needed the twisted id of a Larry David to counterweight his studious banality.

Doooooon't even THINK about it Walter!
I didn't get that Richards was out of whack with the world. Well not that out of whack. I enjoyed this episode a whole lot. The 7m mansion bit was so great the missus and I rewatched it right away. Super entertaining stuff. Wig thing? Not planned? Really? I guess I'll buy that but not really. (I think Richards paid that guy to be there.) Still fantastic.
The only squiffy feeling I had was when I realized I was listening to two super rich white people talk about generosity and selflessness, etc., in that depressingly empty La La way — milking the most basic "spiritual" "insights" as if they were unpacking an atomic bomb. Sigh.
In the end, I felt sad for Richards. He's obviously a talented guy who let one (admittedly serious) lapse undo his career. I think he could rebuild something out of the humility he's found.
I also would not wait around for Jay Mohr.

Also don't get the "Seinfeld isn't funny" business. I love Brian Regan, and I agree TYFTLT ain't all that, but the 20 mins I saw Seinfeld do at the Giraldo benefit a year or two ago was the hardest and longest I've laughed at anything ever. It was astonishing. I was astonished. First Dave Attel came out and knocked it out of the park. Had the audience eating out of his hand. Killed. Destroyed. Amazeballs. Seinfeld was ten levels above that. Not the kind of comedy I'm interested in doing, mind you, but I was blown the fuck away. Schooled.
With all due respect, Seinfeld represents all that I hated about the 90s. I have to admit that it is all in hindsight as I didn't spend more than five minutes watching the show when it was on but I just really hate the idea of "it's a show about nothing hahahaha-tra la la". The ultimate in cynicism. I dunno, I play for Hicks' team, I guess...

I think it was about "nothing" as opposed to shows like "Cheers" which was about "alcoholics." But, I'm pretty sure no one said Seinfeld wasn't funny. So the whole thing has been a waste of all of your time. Think back on this when you're dying.
PS I play for Galifianakis's AAA team.
PPS Craig B said he wasn't funny
What bugged me about it was the whole, "it's not about us" argument. I do think that you have consider your audience when you're a performer but not to the extent that Seinfeld thinks - where it's not about you at all. That sounds like a guy who's just doing a 9-to-5. Why bother? The only squiffy feeling I had was when I realized I was listening to two super rich white people talk about generosity and selflessness, etc., in that depressingly empty La La way — milking the most basic "spiritual" "insights" as if they were unpacking an atomic bomb. Sigh.
also, people who don't like the show Seinfeld make me yeesh

Can I just toss in, for no real reason, that there's no way that homeless chess savant story actually happened? Dude saw Searching for Bobby Fischer and Robin Williams'd that yarn.
Jay Mohr talks about this on Mohr Stories Ep. 75. I guess Sugar Ray does live in the neighborhood.
All I know is, I watched "The Chinese Restaurant" episode of Seinfeld recently and I still lol.
