    Comedian Blogs

This seems like as good a place as any to get a big list of Comedian’s weblogs going. All the ones I have included have RSS feeds, since it makes it easy to keep track of them. I included a little about each one (not a review) for some clarity. Hopefully others can add more.

    Andy Kindler's* Blah Blah Blog
    http://andykindler.blogs.com/blah_blah_blog/
Not updated really, but there are a bunch of old posts.

*Michael Ian Black*: Some Advice on How to Deal With Stress
    http://michaelianblack.typepad.com/blog/
    Updated very often

    *Todd Barry*
    http://www.toddbarry.com/news.html
    Mostly just tour dates

    Bill Dawes
    http://www.billdawes.net
Probably someone that no one here would like his material, but he has long stories of touring Iraq and South Africa with Jamie Kennedy. Not really updated too often.

    Bob and David
    http://www.bobanddavid.com
    Updated about once a week

    doug benson - MySpace Blog
    http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...riendID=604789
    Updates pretty much everyday

    Louis C.K.
    http://www.louisck.net
More and more he is updating more and more.

    Mike Schmidt Comedy
    http://blog.mikeschmidtcomedy.com
Usually just burbs about the podcast, but more detailed than the ones posted on AST.

    Patton Oswalt - MySpace Blog
    http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...endID=67077201
Not very often and his Spew does not seem to have an RSS feed (but if it did, I'd be all over that)

    the nerdist
    http://www.nerdist.com/
New, updated very very often, and already has its own thread here, but on my list anyway

All of these are personal weblogs of Comedians. I didn’t put reviews since I guess it’s pretty obvious I like reading all the weblogs I read. I don’t want to dictate the rules of the thread, so this could just be a catch-all for weblogs in general, but I mostly included ones by more famous-ish people.

Blog is almost as wierd a word to type as it is to say.

OK, I guess this is the spot to plug blogs, so here we go:

    http://willoneill.com

I am a comedian and there is funny stuff on there, but I am now moving more towards writing about comedy writing in a theoretical / academic breakdown type of way...

    Re: Comedian Blogs

I read about a book on Dead Frog's site called, "And Here's the Kicker." It looked pretty, totally, undeniably awesome. Its about comedy writing. Some questions are posed to comedians over and over again (How do you come up with your material, When did you know you were funny) and "Here's the Kicker" looks like it flies in the face of questions like that, at least from the review I read.

I was thinking about questions that people never ask comedians, when they interview them. Can you all think of any?

I bet that like, "Fender" magazines interview with a famous guitarist would have some interesting questions, that you wouldnt find in Rolling Stone about the technical aspect of the trade. And its hard to find interviews that do something like that with comedians.

I am definately going to pick up "Here's the Kicker." And your bloggity blog blog

    Re: Comedian Blogs

That sounds like a great book, I'll definitely check it out - what I hate is when I read a comedian's bio, hoping they'll really write about how they develop their craft, only to somehow find yourself two days later at the end of a 300-page book about how much they love cocaine.

Not that Artie Lang promised me anything personally.

I also wonder why there aren't a lot of technical questions - is there still something very old-school show business about comedy, maybe, where there's a sense of piercing the illusion to talk about it? Or is there a thought that getting all meta about it somehow tears it down as art?

    Re: Comedian Blogs

Comedy journalism is a nascent field. The Comic's Comic (along with AST) is pretty much the comedy world's Variety, while The Apiary is its People Magazine and Dead Frog its Cineaste.

Not the best metaphor but simply put technical questions come from those who focus on comedy. Not from those who just want to skip ahead to the movie/TV deal, which is typically why comics are interviewed in the first place.

If you're looking for craft, check out Sandpaper Suit. It's a blog by Matt Ruby, a comedian in NY.

He does an excellent job of pulling quotes from articles and dissecting comedy, especially from the perspective of a growing comedian. Definitely one of my favorites.

    Guys,

Again, just want to say thanks. These are all exactly what I'm looking for - the only thing that kills me is that all the terms on Google which you'd think would lead to them do not.

@Kentock Thanks for the praise of Sandpaper Suit. I appreciate it!

    @willoneill re:

Yeah, I think most comics think it's bad form to be too open about how the sausage gets made. But I love talking about the craft/art part of standup at Sandpaper Suit. I try to bring up the subjects that comedians talk about when they're in the back of the room at a show. (And I post videos and joke ideas there too.)

If you're interested in checking it out, "The best of Sandpaper Suit for 2008" is a good place to start. Highlights some of the top posts of the past year.

I also can't praise Sandpaper Suit enough. Love it.

Another decent blog is at http://www.badslava.com. Slava's website is the best resource for New York open mic listings that I've found, and he has been blogging his thoughts on comedy theory for about a year. Interesting to go back and read through.

    Re: Comedian Blogs

I just found the RiffTrax blog. Funny:

While looking up whether or not Dunkaroos still exist, (they do), I found this confounding graphic on Amazon.

These items are “frequently” bought together? Really? A box of 14 six-packs of Cinnamon Dunkaroos with Vanilla frosting and sprinkles, a variety pack of 24 Dunkaroos (you’d have to imagine half Cinnamon/Vanilla & Sprinkles, half Honey/Chocolate) and a four pack of 14.2 ounce boxes of Rice Krispie Treats cereal?

Now, not for a moment do I doubt that the discerning Dunkaroos eaters out there would also be interested in eating Rice Krispie Treats cereal. But let’s break this down just a little bit.

Let’s speculate as to how many people have used amazon.com to purchase Dunkaroos. I think it would be fair to say that we would all be shocked if more than 1000 people had done this at some point in time in their lives. And how many of these people look at their box of 84 packs of Cinnamon Graham with Vanilla Frosting and Sprinkles Dunkaroos and think, “I’d like another flavor. Now, I know I already have a lot of Cinnamon Graham with Vanilla Frosting and Sprinkles Dunkaroos, but I really want Honey Graham with Chocolate Frosting Dunkaroos, and frankly, if I have to buy 12 more packs of Cinnamon Graham with Vanilla Frosting and Sprinkles to get them, so be it.”

Again, you would be floored, utterly astounded if a quarter of the dunkaroos purchasers, 250 people, had ever done this.

And THEN, how many of those 250 people think that the perfect way to cap off this order would be four boxes of Rice Krispy Treats Cereal? Three? You’d eat your hat if there were three.

You and I know full well that this has never happened. It would be a miracle. And yet, Amazon claims it happens “Frequently”.

Which either means one of two things: that the Amazon robots are just upselling random combinations of crap and hoping we won’t notice, or that humanity as a whole is quite different than I have spent my entire life believing. And, I’m sad to say, I’m leaning towards option B.

I love this thread. I went to sandpapers suits blog for the first the other day and found out Tom Jones was playing nyc last night. I owe that guy big time. Tom Jones is one of my favs and I had a blast at the show. It was raining panties.

Also, Nick Kroll has a tumbler too. Not updated a lot, but it exists, and has random photos of infomercials on his tv.

Anymore? What about other blogs or comedy boards or websites with interviews?

    Re: Comedian Blogs

I have a really great blog: http://www.werepoodle.blogspot.com. I write it with some of the ideas coming from my older brother/comedy partner. If you go there you will find gags, sketches, monologues, and general arrticles on music and comedy. And the references range from Burt Reynolds to "Back to the Future" to Anderson Cooper. I try very hard to keep it funny. I hope some of you ASTers will visit it and maybe spread the word. I promise you will like something there!

I noticed this blog is now moving away from comedy writing in a theoretical/academic breakdown type of way and is more focused on mortgage lending. Just all sorts of information on mortgage lending.
