    Broken Lizard thread

    From the Hollywood Reporter:

Universal is getting into the Broken Lizard comedy business, picking up "Rogue Scholars" and an untitled project from the comedy group.

Motion Picture Corporation of America has partnered with Broken Lizard on the pictures and will co-finance both projects through its studio feature film investment fund.

"Rogue" is being developed as a college comedy revolving around five unruly professors played by the members of Broken Lizard -- Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. The group also handles writing chores for their movies.

Details for the second project are being kept under wraps. Both are in the script stage.
Brad Krevoy, Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber of MPCA will produce with Richard Perello of Broken Lizard Industries.

Universal's Tracy Falco and Kiska Higgs will oversee the projects for the studio. Callaghan will oversee for MPCA.

By putting Broken Lizard into their terrarium, Universal gets a couple of low-budget comedies that are good bets. Although the group's comedies, ranging from "Super Troopers" to "Beerfest," haven't drawn big numbers at the boxoffice, they have a solid fan base, tend to be profitable and perform well on DVD. The group recently finished a comedy tour that covered 40 cities and is doing a special for Comedy Central set to air in the fall.

But MPCA, which has a history of producing comedies -- including the Farrelly brothers' "Dumb & Dumber" and "Kingpin" and Chris Farley's "Beverly Hills Ninja" -- said the plan with "Rogue" and the second project is to bring Broken Lizard to a broader audience.

"Every five to 10 years, there's a new group that comes to the fore in the comedy world," Krevoy said. "If you look at their body of work and see that they understand modern comedy, they are ready for that breakout. We want to expand them out of their core audience into a four-quadrant audience. They are worth the commitment to get these films made."

Krevoy said "Rogue" will try to reach three generations of comedy fans by aiming for college-aged funnymen as the students, Broken Lizard as the teachers and an older generation as the administration.

"We are hoping to have the best and the brightest appear in this," Krevoy said.

Also, "The Slammin Salmon" is out on DVD on April 13th. Did anyone actually see it? The few reviews I read were fairly positive.

I'm not sure what this is, but there's a DVD called "Broken Lizard Stands Up" coming out on September 14th. It's being put out by Comedy Central. I guess it must be a recording of them doing live stand-up; it looks like they've done stand-up performances at Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco and other places.

They did a live taping at the El Rey Theatre in LA on January 28th, 2010. It was an awesome show, they did some sketches and each of them did some standup. Definitely check it out if you're a Broken Lizard fan.

    Re: Broken Lizard thread

It's going to air on Comedy Central as well:

"Broken Lizard Stands Up" - World Premiere

    Saturday, 9/11 at Midnight

Starring Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme and Paul Soter. Viewers have seen them sitting in cars as the worst highway patrolmen ever, lying in bars at international drinking competitions and now COMEDY CENTRAL lets viewers see the Broken Lizard gang in a whole new way: standing up! From the hilariously twisted minds of the creators of "Super Troopers" and "Beerfest" comes a brand new stand-up comedy special, "Broken Lizard Stands Up."

I rented Slammin' Salmon from a Red Box not knowing anything about it other than it was from the Broken Lizard guys. Honestly, not the best. If I were ranking their films SS would fall between Beerfest (solid but my hopes were high) and Club Dread (awful). I still think Supertroopers was great, hopefully BL doesn't become a one hit wonder of the comedy world.

I acutally didn't think Slammin' Salmon was that bad when I rented it a few weeks ago. Michael Clarke Duncan really cracked me up.

I caught Broken Lizard: Stands Up on the secret stash Saturday night.

It was one of the worst specials I've seen in a while. Very stale, re-hashed jokes, no comedic timing or pacing, and at the very end they bring out everybody on stools and try to do some Blue Collar Comedy Tour: One For The Road moment where everyone tells stories of how they met each other (to no effect).

If Comedy Central cut out any parts where they do any sketch comedy, I did not see it. But 80% of what I did see was pure, humorless crap. Very heartbreaking as I enjoy Super Troopers and Beerfest.

    Re: Broken Lizard thread

Actress and Daily Show correspondent Olivia Munn has landed the female lead in Broken Lizard’s new indie comedy "The Baby Maker". Paul Schneider ("Lars and the Real Girl") is set to star, with Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar poised to direct. The film centers on a young married couple having trouble conceiving a child. The husband decides to rob a Pasedena sperm bank alongside his friends, in order to retrieve the specimen he donated as a young man. Variety reports that Munn will play the leading female role in the flick, which is presumably Schneider’s wife.

All of the Broken Lizard members are expected to co-star, with Kevin Heffernan playing Schneider’s crazy best friend, and Chandrasekhar taking on the role of a master Estonian thief.

Yeah, I watched a handful of this a while back and was astonished at how unfunny it was. To be fair, I don't think any of them were stand-ups, so it makes sense they weren't funny. I remember when they came to Minneapolis on this tour and considered going. That would have been a sad night. I would liken that tour to more of a "Charlie Sheen" thing than anything else, just some people cashing in on their images/trying something new. I think it was kind of expensive to see them live as well (like maybe 40-50).

    Re: Broken Lizard thread

I saw Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme (billing themselves as "Broken Lizard Stands Up", even though it was just the two of them) at the Improv in Tampa on Saturday night. At the beginning of the show, they talked about how they are about to start production on "Super Troopers 2"; I'm not sure how accurate that is, but that's what they said. They also said that they were going to make "Potfest" and "Cokefest", but I think that was just a joke.

They're not really all that great at doing standup, although Lemme is better at it than Heffernan is. I think some of the routines/stories may have been recycled from that "Broken Lizard Stands Up" special they did, although it's been a couple of years since I saw that. They talked about how Quentin Tarantino helped convince Harvey Weinstein to make "Super Troopers", and Heffernan talked about shooting the scene in "Beerfest" where he has to drink his way out of the giant vat of beer (which also contained a lot of his pee).

Yeah I remember the stand-up not being too great in that special when it aired on Comedy Central a few years back. Though I was pretty surprised to find out in the special that Erik Stolhanske has a prosthetic leg.

Slammin' Salmon and the stand up stuff have been really disappointing, if Super Troopers 2 does film this year like they're saying it is, it had better be really, really good to make up for a lot of lost ground.

    And it needs Brian Cox.
