COMEDY CENTRAL(R) ORDERS WEB SERIES "BROAD CITY" TO PILOT

Pilot to be Executive Produced by Amy Poehler, Dave Becky, Sam Saifer and Series Creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer

NEW YORK, October 8, 2012 - COMEDY CENTRAL has given a pilot order to Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, the comedy duo behind the urban-set web series "Broad City," it was announced today by Kent Alterman, Head of Original Programming and Production, COMEDY CENTRAL. The pilot will be based on the Jacobson/Glazer web series and will star the two Upright Citizens Brigade alums. "Broad City" will be executive produced by Jacobson and Glazer, along with Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation"), Dave Becky and Sam Saifer. Tony Hernandez is Co-Executive Producer. Brooke Posch is the Executive in Charge of Production for COMEDY CENTRAL.

"Amy Poehler told me this would be a great show for us, and that's good enough for me," said Alterman.

"Broad City" follows two girls, played by Jacobson and Glazer, throughout their daily lives in New York City, making the smallest and mundane events hysterical and disturbing to watch all at the same time. Referred to as "sneak-attack feminism" by The Wall Street Journal, their dynamic relationship, combined with their impeccable comedic timing and chemistry, has earned the two comedians praise from The New York Times, Time Out NY, The Fader, and AV Club, among others. The series has been nominated for the ECNY's "Best Web Series" award; Jacobson and Glazer also were nominated individually.

Kent's little quips in the press releases often end up being funnier than the actual shows themselves

I just watched the first few (I am very bored at work today), and it is a fun little "Curb" riff. Those two have tons of chemistry together and are funny and charming enough as performers that I was mostly able to ignore the unbelievably bad production values. Even by youtube standards, these were rough to look at. Fortunately, their charisma shines through. When was the last time Comedy Central had a series with female leads? Sarah's show?

Sarah's was the last, but Amy Schumer's "Inside Amy" will end up premiering before Broad City (hopefully) gets ordered to series.

My only hope for this show is that the theme song is a modified version of Tyga's "Rack City".

The production values are top notch by the end of the first season and stay that way on the second season. I'd highly recommend giving these vids a watch for an example of what these ladies are capable of. The second one also features Amy Poehler, Kristen Schaal, and Andrea Rosen.

Earlier today I saw that my buddy Dan Opsal directed one of their shorts ("Dreams"). Like everything I've seen from this pair, it was very funny, but it certainly benefited from having Opsal's talent behind the camera. Thanks for linking these others which, as you noted, are funny and fancy-lookin' at the same time. Regardless, this duo is really strong and I'm really looking forward to their show, which will be a first for me and Comedy Central in a very long time.

Edited to say that "Do The Right Thing" is such an amazing movie that even comedy tributes to it give me goosebumps. Spike Lee, say and do all the crazy stuff you want. Your lifetime pass remains!

I like this series but I don't think it starts to get really good until the episode where they go to lunch with their mothers. I feel like that's where their relationship/dynamic gets really solidified. everything after that is great.

    From Deadline:

Comedy Central has given a 10-episode series order to Broad City, an adaptation of Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s digital series, for a 2014 premiere. The project, originally set up at FX in 2011, was picked up to pilot by Comedy Central last fall. It follows two friends in New York City (Jacobson, Glazer), navigating their way through the minutiae that is life. “Finally, there’s a television show set in New York City,” said Comedy Central president of original programming Kent Alterman. Broad City is executive produced by Upright Citizens Brigade alums Jacobson and Glazer, along with UCB co-founder Amy Poehler, Poehler’s manager, 3 Arts’ Dave Becky, and Jacobson and Glazer’s manager Samantha Saifer. Tony Hernandez is Co-Executive Producer. “I’m excited to work with Comedy Central and introduce Abbi and Ilana to America,” Poehler said. “And all the other countries. And also Mars. We’ve got big plans.”
